Mission<br />
To help women and children. . .<br />
heal, grow and overcome difficult life circumstances by providing<br />
affordable mental health counseling and innovative educational<br />
programs in a respectful and nurturing environment.<br />
Our Goals<br />
• To improve the psychological, social and occupational functioning <strong>of</strong> our<br />
clients.<br />
• To link women and children to services at a time when they have a<br />
high probability <strong>of</strong> improvement, and before they become more severely<br />
impaired.<br />
• To ensure all services are affordable to our clients, thereby removing cost<br />
as a major obstacle to treatment.<br />

Dear Oasis Supporters,<br />
Our past year can be summed up as<br />
a year in which we looked to the future.<br />
Our Board began 2013 by under<strong>taking</strong><br />
a Strategic Planning initiative. As<br />
Oasis approaches its 20th year, we<br />
decided it was necessary to take a<br />
critical look at the organization from<br />
all facets. With strong leadership by<br />
Jim Sisson, we developed several hardworking<br />
committees that have helped<br />
put in place a blue print for the future<br />
<strong>of</strong> Oasis.<br />
Part <strong>of</strong> that blue print is the need<br />
to focus on strategic fund raising and<br />
community awareness. With the<br />
leadership <strong>of</strong> our Executive Director,<br />
Kathryn Bowden, and the addition<br />
<strong>of</strong> Katrina Watson as Director <strong>of</strong><br />
Development & Communication,<br />
we are well-equipped to meet these<br />
objectives.<br />
Perhaps the overall driver for our<br />
Strategic Planning is the desire to<br />
expand services to the 1912 House.<br />
This third house on the Oasis Campus<br />
will be a dedicated child therapy<br />
President’s<br />
Message<br />
center. This expansion <strong>of</strong> services will<br />
allow Oasis to meet a key need in our<br />
community for affordable counseling<br />
for children. Already fundraising<br />
efforts to pay for renovations to the<br />
1912 House and to fund the cost for<br />
additional personnel are underway.<br />
Soon <strong>you</strong> will be hearing more from<br />
our Board members on how to make<br />
this center a reality. This is a challenge<br />
that the Oasis Board is willing to meet<br />
and we will be looking to our business<br />
and community leaders for help.<br />
My heartfelt thanks go to<br />
all who have supported Oasis in<br />
2013. Because <strong>of</strong> the generosity <strong>of</strong><br />
countless individuals, corporations<br />
and foundations, Oasis has been able<br />
to provide quality, pr<strong>of</strong>essional mental<br />
health services to 1,137 women,<br />
children, and families in 2013. The<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essional support provided by the<br />
staff at Oasis gives our clients the<br />
strength and motivation to overcome<br />
adversity and improve their lives.<br />

Impact<br />
Since 1995. . .<br />
Oasis has helped more than 30,000 women, children, and families build<br />
strong mental and emotional foundations that will benefit them throughout<br />
their lives. For nearly twenty years, Oasis has maintained its reputation for<br />
and commitment to providing quality, accessible mental health services to<br />
members <strong>of</strong> our community. In 2013, Oasis’ experienced clinical staff provided<br />
a record-high 5,366 sessions <strong>of</strong> counseling and Oasis is poised to expand<br />
services even further.<br />
Counseling Program<br />
Women, Couples, and Families<br />
Counseling is at the core <strong>of</strong> Oasis’ services. Licensed counselors strive to<br />
provide women with the tools they need to recover from depression and<br />
anxiety, heal from abuse and trauma, develop healthy relationships and coping<br />
styles, and meet the challenges in their lives. Counseling helps women who<br />
come to Oasis take better <strong>care</strong> <strong>of</strong> themselves, their relationships, and their<br />
families.<br />

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists work with the couples and families<br />
that come to Oasis to master healthier ways to relate and communicate,<br />
reducing conflict and enriching their relationships. A stronger family system<br />
benefits everyone.<br />
Child and Adolescent Therapy<br />
Play Therapy builds upon the natural way children learn about themselves and<br />
their relationships in the world. Children present with a variety <strong>of</strong> difficult<br />
issues, such as trauma from abuse or domestic violence and adjustment to<br />
difficult life situations including school problems, parents’ divorce, or the<br />
death <strong>of</strong> a loved one. Oasis’ Registered Play Therapists select a variety <strong>of</strong><br />
toys and materials for their therapeutic playrooms with <strong>care</strong>ful attention to<br />
the effect they have on facilitating a child’s expression <strong>of</strong> emotional content<br />
through the natural medium <strong>of</strong> play.<br />
Treatment for adolescent girls incorporates a variety <strong>of</strong> approaches including<br />
expressive arts therapy and traditional talk therapy. Registered Art Therapist<br />
designs interventions that help these clients better access and express their<br />
thoughts and feelings. Licensed Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Counselors work individually<br />
with adolescent girls to help them manage problematic emotions and<br />
behaviors, develop positive self-image, and move toward becoming healthy<br />
and productive adults.<br />

Wise Women<br />
The Oasis Wise Women Program focuses on the issues <strong>of</strong> women ages 55<br />
and older. In 2013, Oasis provided 524 sessions <strong>of</strong> counseling to 102 <strong>of</strong> these<br />
seasoned women.<br />

Outcomes<br />
Additionally, 38 Wise Women participated in a twice-monthly group conducted<br />
by Oasis counselors at Freedom Manor, an apartment community for lowincome<br />
elderly, providing them a social network, meaningful activities, and<br />
mental health resources. For the fourth year, the Junior League <strong>of</strong> Birmingham<br />
Community Research Committee provided support and volunteers for Wise<br />
Women.<br />
Education and Outreach Program<br />
In 2013, Oasis reached 823 members <strong>of</strong> the community through more than 40 events including:<br />

Over the years, Oasis has developed and maintained a network <strong>of</strong> collaborative<br />
partnerships with other community nonpr<strong>of</strong>its, agencies, and institutions, allowing<br />
individuals served by one entity to be connected to many. Oasis has been a reliable<br />
referral resource for these partners, who know that Oasis will provide accessible and<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essional mental health services to their clients.<br />

Expanding<br />
Services. . .<br />

Analysis<br />
Since 2007, Oasis has more than tripled its services to children and adolescent<br />
girls and must expand capacity in order to maintain its commitment to<br />
affordable and accessible services. Oasis currently provides services in two<br />
Victorian houses that <strong>of</strong>fer a welcoming and nurturing environment.<br />
In October 2013, the Oasis Board <strong>of</strong> Directors unanimously voted to expand<br />
services to children and adolescent girls. At the heart <strong>of</strong> the expansion will<br />
be the renovation <strong>of</strong> a third Victorian house, designated as a child therapy<br />
center that will include additional therapeutic playrooms, counseling <strong>of</strong>fices<br />
and more. Specially-trained therapists will provide developmentally sensitive,<br />
culturally appropriate, and effective mental health services.<br />
As <strong>of</strong> December 31, 2013, 50% <strong>of</strong> funds have been raised for the expansion<br />
including a $300,000 leadership gift from the Junior League <strong>of</strong> Birmingham<br />
Beeson Community Fund.<br />

$15 per hour: Average fee for self-paying clients at Oasis<br />
$116 per hour: Average cost <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional counseling services in our area<br />
Community Need: Women, children and families experiencing grief,<br />
depression, anxiety, trauma from abuse, and other mental health issues have little<br />
or no access to public services because community mental health centers treat<br />
only individuals diagnosed as Seriously Mentally Ill. Private practitioners charge<br />
rates that are <strong>of</strong>ten cost prohibitive for clients. Oasis fills this critical gap by<br />
providing high-quality mental health <strong>care</strong> on a generous sliding-fee scale.<br />

Oasis <strong>of</strong> Hope<br />
The seventh annual Oasis <strong>of</strong> Hope luncheon, held March 12, 2013, raised a<br />
record $132,502 for Oasis. The luncheon, chaired by Sheryl Kimerling and<br />
Deborah White, honored the Junior League <strong>of</strong> Birmingham ( JLB). Guests<br />
enjoyed a special presentation by Leigh Forstman and performances by the JLB<br />
Choral Group and 11-year-old pianist Miki Kato.<br />
