letter
from the President
Thank you to everyone who
supported Oasis in 2012.
Through the generosity of
countless individuals, local
corporate sponsors and the
foundations that are so vital to
our community, Oasis provided
quality, professional services
to women and children who
might have fallen through the
cracks in the public system.
The professional support
provided by the staff at Oasis
gives the clients the strength
and motivation to overcome
adversity and change their
lives.
Please review our annual
report which recognizes the
individuals and organizations
that helped make 2012 a
successful year and another
step along the path to fully
realizing our Mission.
It is the generosity of
this community that
makes Oasis possible.
It has been an honor and a
pleasure to serve as Board
President. I believe the quality
of the staff, the leadership of the
board and the commitment of
the Executive Director have all
been vital to the organization’s
current success and will carry
it forward for years to come.
Joseph E. Sandner, IV
2012 Board President
2012 ANNUAL REPORT | 3
Hope
Oasis is so much more than just...
a counseling center for women and children — it is a safe place of hope
and healing for those so overwhelmed by life’s difficulties they are unable
to lead healthy and productive lives. Since we opened our doors in 1995,
we have provided critical mental health counseling services to women,
children, and families who otherwise may have gone without the care
they needed to improve their lives.
Countless lives have been touched by the work we do. The legacy
of counseling lives on not just in those we counsel, but in the lives of
those people our clients touch and in the stories they tell. At Oasis, we
empower, women, children, and families like yours to rebuild their lives.
Our Mission
To help women and children heal, grow and overcome difficult life
circumstances by providing affordable mental health counseling
and innovative educational programs in a respectful and nurturing
environment.
Our Goals
“Looking back on it now, if
I hadn’t made the decision
to come to Oasis I don’t
know if I’d be alive today.”
—Alice, age 19
4 | 2012 ANNUAL REPORT
• To improve the psychological, social and occupational functioning
of our clients.
• To link women and children to services at a time when they have
a high probability of improvement, and before they become more
severely impaired.
• To ensure all services are affordable to our clients, thereby removing
cost as a major obstacle to treatment.
2012 ANNUAL REPORT | 5
Impact
Since 1995. . .
Since 1995, Oasis has helped women and children heal from mental
health problems caused by trauma, violence, depression, anxiety, grief
and challenging life transitions. In 2012, we saw a 22% overall increase
in clients.
Services Provided:
• Individual Counseling
• Adolescent Therapy
• Play Therapy
• Couples and Family Counseling
• Group Therapy
• Outreach and Education
Oasis works closely with a caring network of nonprofit organizations to
serve those in need without duplicating services.
“ When I could not find help
in the medical community
or anywhere else, Oasis truly
saved my sanity.” —Judy, age 46
Core Counseling Program
To address escalating hardships on families, our services promote selfsufficiency
and help clients develop knowledge and skills for maintaining
well-being so that they can move beyond the cycle of poverty and better
care for themselves and their families.
Child and Adolescent Therapy
We offer play therapy to children ages 3 to 12 who have difficulty
processing traumatic events through traditional counseling. Adolescent
counseling services are provided for girls ages 13 to 18. Through
these methods children and adolescents learn to express feelings and
concerns that help alleviate problematic symptoms and behaviors.
These young clients show improvement in the way they function in the
school environment, at home and with peers. Early intervention can help
them grow into functional, fulfilled adults.
Children and young girls from primarily low-income families are referred
to Oasis for counseling by pediatricians, school counselors, private
therapists, Family Court, the Department of Human Resources,
Children’s of Alabama, parents, and local nonprofit agencies.
Common Problems For Children & Adolescents:
• Parental divorce, grief, school adjustment
• Relational problems
• Anxiety and depression
• ADHD (Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder)
Healing and resolution take place through play, facilitated by Registered
Play Therapists Mimie Player and Catherine Foss — both of whom are
Licensed Professional Counselors.
Partnership Growth
Young Breast Cancer Survivorship Network (YBCSN): Oasis, as part of
an inter-professional collaborative partnership focused on improving the
quality of life of young breast cancer survivors, is providing counseling
services for young breast cancer survivors and their families. Individual,
couples, and family counseling, as well as Art Therapy, are available. Play
Therapy is available for children ages 3-12. The YBCSN initiative in the
UAB School of Nursing is a program supported by the Women’s Breast
Health Fund of the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham.
The American Cancer Society, Susan G. Komen, UAB Supportive Care
and Survivorship, and Baptist Medical are also partners. For more
information, visit www.uab.edu/nursing/research
Counseling Services for residents of Pathways: Oasis has partnered with
Pathways, a local nonprofit that offers transitional housing for homeless
women and children, to provide counseling services to their resident
families. This partnership makes it possible for Pathways to offer critical
counseling services without staffing an in-house professional. This
collaboration benefits both the agencies and the women and children
they serve.
Ongoing Collaborations
Oasis is part of a caring network of local nonprofits connecting clients
to one or more community agencies depending on their needs. Oasis
works with several agencies, including Aletheia House, Children’s Aid
Project Independence, Cooper Green, Crisis Center/Rape Response,
First Light, FOCUS on Recovery, JCCEO, Lifeline Children’s Services,
Steps Ahead Medicaid Maternity Care, St Vincent’s Birmingham
Access to Care, and the UAB Obstetric Complications Clinic, to provide
professional counseling services.
Junior Board Creates ArtCard
Oasis launched a Junior Board to better reach young women and
families who might need our services now or in the future. Led by Megan
LaRussa, granddaughter of Oasis founder Anne LaRussa, the Junior
Board held its first fundraising event, ArtCard, June 21, 2012. The event
was a vibrant mix of art gallery, porch party, and social mixer.
“Oasis is a safe haven and I needed
to feel safe before I could begin to
tell my story” —Lucy, age 59
More than 200 guests
filled the Oasis facilities
at the inaugural
ArtCard, which raised
nearly $14,000 for
counseling services
and programs. More
than 100 original
pieces of art from local
artists, celebrities,
chefs, and designers
sold for $50 each.
ArtCard not only
brought in money for
the organization, but it raised awareness of our mission and our vision,
highlighting what we do for young women and families in our area.
Oasis of Hope
