Office hours 

The Community Education Department occupies an office at Burlington High School, located at 400 McCanna 

Parkway. Our office is open Monday – Friday from 7:00AM – 3:30PM. The Community Education 

Department Office will be closed on Monday, September 3, 2012, Thursday, November 22, 2012 and Friday, 

November 23, 2012. Registrations can also be dropped off at Burlington School District’s central office, 

located at 100 North Kane St., Burlington, WI. 

Eligibility 

Programs and services provided by the Community Education Department are open to all Burlington Area 

School District residents, as well as anyone living outside the Burlington Area School District. 

Cancellation/Refund Policy 

Classes with insufficient enrollment will be cancelled and payment will be refunded. Complete refunds will be 

given for any program cancelled by Community Education. 

Weather Cancellations 

If the Burlington School District is closed due to inclement weather, then all Community Education programs 

and activities are also cancelled. In cases when weather conditions deteriorate during the day, please check our 

website at http://www.basd.k12.wi.us/community_ed.cfm or call (262) 763-0219 after 3:30PM to determine 

whether or not evening classes and programs are cancelled.

From The Director ~ Scott Hoffman 

Welcome to the Community Education Department and to many exciting recreation opportunities. Nicknamed 

“CED”, we are a department of the Burlington Area School District celebrating lifelong learning and recreation. 

We Create Community! 

…through opportunities for active recreation, citizen involvement, and collaborations with other community 

organizations. 

� We serve residents of the community from birth through senior adulthood with a myriad of programs 

and activities. 

� We use both Burlington Area School District and City of Burlington facilities, bringing programs close 

to your neighborhood. 

� We strive to serve one and all, in fulfillment of our mission: To enhance the quality of life for our 

community and to provide safe and meaningful recreational and educational opportunities for kids and 

adults of all ages. 

Citizen Input 

Community Education is a philosophy that public schools can and should be used by all members of the 

community beyond the normal school day and year-round. It is a philosophy of citizen involvement, where 

programs are developed and provided based on what is needed in each community. Through citizen input over 

the years, our offerings have increased and changed to reflect the interests and needs of our participants. 

Opportunities for feedback, ideas, and suggestions are always welcome from program participants. If you or 

anyone you know is interested in teaching a class please contact the Community Education Department. 

Program Information 

We publish three brochures each year, Fall (September – December), Winter/Spring (January – May), and 

Summer (June – August). Brochures are distributed to all public and parochial elementary schools, grades K – 6 

in the Burlington area as “backpack mail”. Our brochures are also inserts in the weekly Burlington Hi-Liter 

paper. Brochures can also be picked up at the Burlington School District Office, 100 N. Kane St., Burlington 

Public Library and the Burlington Chamber of Commerce.

Ping Pong - Ages, 18 & over 

Wikipedia says Ping Pong is a game or sport in which two or 

four players hit a lightweight, hollow ball back and forth with 

rackets. A skilled player can impart several varieties of spin 

to the ball, altering its trajectory and limiting an opponent's 

options to great advantage. Some of our adult players have 

been playing for over 30 years and they say "BRING IT !!" 

Recreational yet competitive in nature . . . these guys take 

pride in their skills and endurance. Show us what you've got 

every Monday evening. Bring your own ping pong paddle and 

balls.

Fall Yoga - Adults, 18 & over 

Join certified yoga instructor Donna Mosca as you learn the 

basic techniques used in the practice of yoga. Remove any 

images you may have of pretzel like people and super-human 

flexibility...this is for everyone! Together we will learn to 

relax into our own bodies, increase range of motion, build

Lake Geneva Cruise Line Full Lake Tour 

- Ages, 18 & over 

Relax and enjoy all the scenic beauty of the lake as you cruise 

completely around lovely Geneva Lake in approximately two 

hours. You won't miss any of the unique estates and will also 

be provided an in-depth commentary about the history of the 

area. The cruise passes by the Villages of Williams Bay and 

Fontana and takes in the world famous Yerkes Observatory 

and historic Black Point Estate. for a full picture of all that the 

lake offers, don't miss the Full Lake Tour - usually aboard the 

Walworth. A snack bar and cash bar provide refreshments 

while you are onboard.

Card Making - Class in a Flash - Adults, 

18 & Over 

Need a Birthday Card or Get Well FAST? - This "Class in a 

Flash" card making class is for the novice to experienced card 

maker. Every month on the third Monday I will be holding a 

rubber stamping class at Karcher Middle School using 

Stampin' Up! products. Each class will have a theme, whether 

it is products from the current catalog, mini catalog, 

techniques or an upcoming holiday, you are certain to come 

away with 3 beautiful hand-made cards/project that are fun to 

make and great to give to family or friends...if you can bear to 

part with them! The average person keeps a handmade card 

3X longer than a store bought card. Please bring scissors and a 

tape runner (adhesive). All other materials are provided by the 

instructor. If you do not have a tape runner, you can purcase 

them the night of class for $3.00, refills $2.50. FREE raffle 

every class. $19 for 3 cards/projects, $1 off if you prepay 1 

week before the Class Date. $1.00 will be given back to you

Introduction to Computers and the 

Internet for Seniors - Ages, 55 & over 

Are you new to computers or think it’s too late to learn how to 

surf the web? Well, that’s about to change! If you are 

interested in learning the basic operations of a computer, how 

to set up an email account, or explore the meanings behind 

Internet vocabulary such as, search engine, blogging, facebook 

or google. This class offers an interactive and fun chance for 

you to not only make sense of these words, but to put them to 

use and create your own presence on the web. During this 

course, you will get the support you need to feel comfortable 

with the computer, use a word processor, create and use an 

email account, download documents, and learn how to use 

“search engines” to find information on people, places, and 

things. In no time you will be able to find your way around the 

web and “surf” the Internet like a pro. Your input and

Internet? Now that you have an email address, and you have 

learned how to surf the internet for information, explore what 

more the web can offer. This class is about taking things to the 

next level (not too fast, of course). 

In this next level, we cover Google (and beyond!), explore 

advanced researching and searching on the web, receive some 

email tips, learn how to download or upload documents, 

pictures and videos on the Web (YouTube is not just for kids 

anymore), learn how to facebook and blog, and so much more! 

And as always your input is part of the class; your personal 

questions and topics can help impact the direction of the 

course. The planned content is enhanced in order to cover the 

topics YOU want covered, and help you solve any problems 

YOU may be having. Apple and Windows are welcome. If

Line Dancing for Seniors - Adults, 

55 & over 

If you are over 55 years of age and would like to learn how to 

line dance then this class is for you. Come and learn some of 

the popular line dances. We will offer two nights of dancing

This high ropes adventure includes ten stations (all 25' off the

individuals, couples and families. Help build confidence and 

self-esteem. Perfect for interacting and supporting one 

another. YMCA Camp MacLean is proud of their new stateof-the-art 

safety system making this activity enjoyable for all 

ages 6 years and older. Stay and go as many times as you like 

until 3:00PM. This is a wonderful offering by Camp MacLean 

but we need a minimum of 40 individuals to sign up. Call your

NEW CLASSES: Sing a Story Tell a Song and 

Ladybugs, Laughter and Little Ones 

Children are entertained and excited by a good music 

program, but what are they actually learning? I believe that 

music breaks through barriers and opens up both children 

and adults in ways that no other medium does. In this 

program, they will not only be having fun, but they will be: 

*Sharpening their listening skills and realizing their 

musical potential 

*Learning to sing tunefully 

*Moving interactivly and rhythmically while developing 

critical thinking skills through musical ideas 

*Creating self-satisfying melodies and lyrics as they 

express their unique cultural experiences

Interactive music and stories for preschoolers - 3rd graders is 

what we're all about. Children will be introduced to tunes from 

different cultures, new and familiar books and songs and lots

2 1/2 - 4 year olds will be introduced to fun and exciting

their attention spans, pre-reading skills, numbers, colors and 

positive self images are just a few of the things they will take

Girls' Softball Fast Pitch School 

(Beginner) - Grades, 4-8 

This very popular softball school provides an excellent 

teaching environment for young girls to learn how to fast 

pitch. Coaches, uses the Doc Patin's Acu-Pitch system and 

instructs the girls on the proper technique of "windmill" fast 

pitch. Individual attention has been a key to the past success of 

this pitching school. Fall and winter semesters will give the 

girls plenty of practice time to improve their skills and be 

ready for the next season. Non-marking shoes are required: 

avoid shoes with black soles. Bring your glove. All students 

will be required to have their own rubber practice ball. New 

balls will be available for purchase at the clinic: $5 for 12 or 

11 in.

After School Ski Program – Grades, 3 - 8 

~ Starts December 13 th ~ 

BURLINGTON SCHOOL DISTRICT KIDS ONLY! Kids in grades 3 through 8 have been invited to ski on "The Mountain Top" ski 

hill at the Grand Geneva Resort in Lake Geneva. This ski package includes lift ticket, rental equipment and bus transportation to and 

from the ski hill. Students are picked up at their respective schools. They may ski until 6:15 PM. Students must ride the bus to and 

from the ski hill for liability reasons. This is a Tuesday After School program. We will begin skiing on Tuesday, December 11 

through January 29, 2013 (No skiing on Dec. 25 and Jan. 1). After January 29, students are permitted to ski on Tuesdays from 3:30 - 

6:15 PM for the remainder of the ski season for an additional cost of $10.00 each Tuesday (rental equipment included). They must 

present their ticket to get the special $10.00 charge. They must provide their own transportation after January 29. Make-ups are not 

available if a student is absent from a regularly scheduled lesson. All students will receive a permanent ticket for the season (to be 

worn around the neck). Bus supervisors will collect all tickets on the bus ride home and distribute tickets on the bus ride to the ski hill 

so students won't lose them during the week. You will notice that the ski pricing is based on "lessons" or "no lessons". Experienced 

skiers may choose not to take lessons. We encourage all kids to take a lesson each week to continue to improve their skills. All 

tickets are the responsibility of the holder and lost tickets will be replaced at the cost of $5.00 to the student. Tickets will not be 

replaced after January 29 for any reason. If students are caught using someone else's ticket, it will be revoked and ski privileges 

terminated for the remainder of the season - with no refunds! Failure to return rental equipment will also result in a loss of ski 

privileges. Snowboarding lessons will be at 4:45 pm only. Must be 8 years old or older to snowboard. Snowboard rentals require a 

$250.00 credit card deposit. This ski program offers students the opportunity to learn a healthy exciting outdoor sport that can be 

enjoyed for the rest of their lives. Safety and proper conduct on the slopes are stressed, as well as having a good ti me. Lockers cost $ 

.75 for shoes, boots, books and snacks that aren't left on the bus. There is also a snack bar and cafeteria if the students want 

refreshments. We must have the Grand Geneva ski rental/liability forms completed and signed in our office. Please know the age, 

height, weight and boot size of your child when registering. Forms can be picked up at District Office (Lincoln School Building, 100 

N. Kane St.) and Burlington High School Activities Office. Registration will not be complete until the ski rental/liability waiver 

forms are completed and payment is made. No refunds for any reason!

BURLINGTON COMMUNITY EDUCATION DEPARTMENT 

2012 – 2013 SATURDAY YOUTH BASKETBALL 

Grades, 1 through 6 

The Community Education Department offers a basketball program for boys and girls in grades 1 through 8. The program will focus on skill 

development, teamwork, sportsmanship and basketball fundamentals. Our intent is to provide an opportunity to learn and improve basketball 

skills as well as to provide a positive experience for your child. It’s a great form of education and exercise over the cold winter months. 

Your involvement as parents is critical to this program’s continued success. Volunteer coaches will meet on Saturday, November 17th at 1:00 

pm at the BHS cafeteria to pick up your team rosters. You will discuss new coaching techniques, new practice drills and get answers to any 

questions you may have. Please check the bottom of the registration form if you would be willing to coach. The kids need your support. 

We will divide kids into the following groups: 

Coed League Grades (1 & 2) 

Boys’ League Grades (3 & 4) (5 & 6) 

Girls’ League Grades (3 & 4) (5 & 6) 

Advanced Boys’ Grades (2 & 3) 

(The Advanced Boys’ Group is designed for 2 nd and 3 rd grade boys looking for more intense practices and competitive play.)

will be handed out at practice. Players will receive a team T-shirt. A “picture day” will be scheduled for team and individual pictures, which

BURLINGTON WRESTLING CLUB - Grades, K - 8 

Our philosophy is to teach kids to wrestle to the best of their ability. They will also develop skills such as balance and agility while 

learning valuable lessons of accomplishments and setbacks through competition. This program will build discipline, self esteem, 

character, and positive relationships. Burlington Singlets (for tournaments) can be ordered for $40. Spirit-wear & singlet orders are 

due 11/28. Flyer will be posted on www.burlingtonwrestling.com. Delivery TBA – possibly mid-January. Burl Singlets in good/likenew 

condition are exchangeable for a new size each October.

NFL Punt, Pass, Kick – Ages, 6 - 15 

The Burlington Jaycees will host its annual Punt, Pass, Kick 

Competition on Sunday, September 16 th . The competition is 

open to all boys and girls ages 6 – 15. Boys and girls compete 

separately. The five age classifications are based upon the 

child’s age as of December 31 st of the current year. There is no 

charge to participate. All participants must show proof of age 

at all levels of conmpetition. Participants must be present at 

the scheduled starting time in order to compete. Winners in 

each division will have a chance to advance to a sectional and 

then divisional championship. Note: Youth are only 

allowed to participate in one local competition per year. 

Youth are not allowed to wear any type of cleated shoe!
