W E N T W O R T H
SEASONS ONE & TWO
WELCOME TO WENTWORTH PRISON, WHERE EVERYBODY
HAS A STORY BUT WHERE ONE SENTENCE
CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE.

REMBERING THE ICONIC RITA
Rita ‘the Beater’ Connors was one of the
most iconic Prisoner characters after
Bea, the Freak & Myra. As a breathe of
fresh air she stormed into Wentworth
immediately to start the most iconic
Freak battle of all time. During her time
inside Wentworth, she became top dog,
stamped out drugs, gained the women’s
loyalty and respect, burnt down infamous prison Blackmoor, faced a
horrible illness & took down one of the most iconic TV villains of all time.
Along the way she made good friends in fellow inmates Lexie, Judy,
Nancy & of course her best friend Alice Jenkins. Sentenced to four years
for bashing another women who was sleeping with her bikie boyfriend
Slasher, she arrived at Wentworth & wanted her stay to be one
mesmerising party! As soon as she arrived at Wentworth, wearing her
bikie gang’s symbolic ‘Conqueror’s’ jacket, she immediately made an
enemy Joan Ferguson. With the Freak ripping her jacket to shreds, the
battle began and with some help from the bikie gang, Rita made the
Freak realise that she wasn’t just dealing with some ordinary criminal.
Many scraps went on between the two but Rita’s first attempt at getting
rid of the Freak was on a work release, working at the docks on a boat.
She’d convinced the captain to sail them off out to sea, and to cut of all
radios, but dramatic events would take a twist and the Freak would end
up saving Rita’s life when she found herself nearly falling from a cliff. The
Freak would soon believe she had triumphed over Rita as she
shanghaied her to infamous prison Blackmoor. Whilst there Rita vowed
to come back to Wentworth and faced a battle between herself and
Blackmoor’s top dog. Leading to an all scale riot Rita would watch her
brother Bongo die & eventually burn the prison down. After she’s
returned to Wentworth she discovers that she has non-Hodgkin’s
lymphoma, which starts to flaw the irresistible force she is. However, she
wasn’t dying quietly! She told the Freak of a great amount of money,
which would eventually lead to the Freak ending up in Wentworth.
COVER STORY
THE ULTIMATE RITA MEMORY
Glenda Linscott, better known to hardened Prisoner Cell Block: H fans
as biker chick and Harley Davidson fanatic, Rita' the beater' Connors,
war cried her way into Wentworth. Who'd have thought that the rusty
white paddy wagon that graced the gates of Wentworth many times
would be holding the prisoner that would bring down the most iconic
villain in TV history.
I remember watching
Rita's first encounter
with Officer Joan
Ferguson, her black
gloves were on from
the onset as Ferguson,
so dearly known to us
as 'The Freak', ripped the chains off her beloved biker jacket but not
before receiving one of Slasher's (Rita's spunky biker boyfriend) old
socks. eyeballing the freak "You shouldn't have done that" said Rita,
through gritted teeth and it was then I knew that we were in for a real
treat, because no one was going to come in between Rita and her
loyalty to her biker gang, not even prison! and she didn't get the
name Rita 'the beater' for nothing.Immediately, the women could see
a resolve in Rita that made her the ideal candidate for top dog, it was hard
for me initially to feel any emotion towards yet another top dog, after the
demise of Bea, Myra and the weakest top dog of them all Nora Flynn.
I warmed to her as time went on, her constant conflicts with the freak,
the firm and fair way she ruled, the loyalty she had towards her biker
9

COVER STORY
gang (the Conquerors) the love she had for her brother Bongo, but most
of all the unlikely relationship she struck up with Alice 'lurch' Jenkins.
Alice, known troublemaker with the infamous Lou Kelly became
Connors Number 2 and this made me like her even more. So much
happened under Rita's tenure, the
death of Slasher, constant threats
from the freak, riots, daily battles
with Lou Kelly, a battle of wills
with Kath Maxwell but nothing
will ever compare with the period
that Rita spent at Blackmoor.
The freak got her wish, shanghied to Blackmoor Rita would see her
brother killed, then command a group of feral women and rise to top dog
status within days of arrival. This was a defining moment for me, the
rage and passion that came from Rita, developed the upmost respect for
her character and it was that moment that I made her my official
favourite top dog of the series.
I knew the freak wouldn't get
off lightly and although Rita,
made her way back to
Wentworth we would
eventually find out that she
had cancer. It was a bolt out
of the blue, she was strong
willed, hearty, but now she
was sick and becoming a shadow of her former self. With Lurch by her
side the relationship between them both was even more endearing. It was at this
point that she began scheming her elaborate plan to take down the Freak. I'm not
going to spoil it too much for you, I'm going to let you watch. Rita Connors was
a lynch pin in saving the final years of the series, without her then the show
would have faded into obscurity. Thankfully there are fans like us to keep
Prisoner Cell Block H alive. Say it with me...Wentworth Warriooooooors!
10

• Rita Connors appeared in Prisoner from episodes 585-692.
• She was the only Wentworth inmate who’s journey to
Blackmoor was shown.
• She burnt down the most infamous prison in Australia,
Blackmoor.
• Rita got diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
• She managed to set up the most iconic TV villain of all
time, The Freak.
• Rita had the last laugh of the series, stating “I’m going to
be the oldest bike in the world!”
• She was played by Glenda Linscott.
RITA’S POSSIBLE FUTURE
So if Prisoner Cell Block H hadn’t of ended after 692 episodes, what
would have been Rita’s outcome? Was a cure found for her symptom
of cancer? Did she then rise back to Top Dog position or maybe she
might of got herself transferred to the west and finally killed the freak?
Or perhaps she stayed at Wentworth to do battle with one Cynthia???
THE PRISONER FILES
Fan memories of the month
My favourite character in Prisoner is Bea Smith. Some of the reasons are
obvious - her strength and conviction. These are two reasons that
enabled her to be a successful top dog. But her strengths don't only lie in
carrying out the odd bashing. She cares for the women and as such is
well liked and respected. In the early days of Prisoner, Bea was far more
selfish and would even risk the livelihood of those around her, such as
Mum Brookes' parole when she called on her during an escape. As the
series progressed, Bea became older and wiser and a lot more
considerate toward others. She sacrificed her own freedom to save Mum
Brookes the second time she called on her, this time suffering from
genuine amnesia with only bits and pieces of memory she could call on.
Having regained her memory, she thwarts her own plans for freedom in
order to prevent Mum from spending any more time in prison. It is this act
of sacrifice and the way in which she looks out for those close to her that
are her real strengths. Another reason that Bea is my favourite is perhaps
less obvious, her vulnerability. When she enters the tunnel to retrieve
Lizzie when she tries to escape with Doreen, the roof collapses trapping
Bea, Doreen and Lizzie inside. When it become apparent that the danger
of them dying in there becomes very real, Bea's vulnerability becomes
evident as she breaks down - showing that she is as human as the rest of
us and that some things scare her too.
16

THE PRISONER FILES
Fan memories of the month
My favourite villain is a somewhat more difficult
question to answer. For me a villain has to be clever,
terrifying, funny and also somewhat alluring. Nola
McKenzie was the only one who fitted that criteria for
me. Whilst others like Lou Kelly had some hysterical
one-liners, she was somewhat irritating in her earlier
days. Bev Baker was chilling to the core but her
character was short-lived. Marie Winter lacked
cleverness. Nola had all the qualities I would expect
in a villain, and she could rival Bea easily. Whilst Bea
was never afraid to face Nola, it was clear that she
though Nola was a tough adversary. Nola's schemes,
although created to feather her own nest and
enhance her popularity, were perhaps some of the
most enterprising of the series. Her alliance with
Ferguson, fights with Bea, hilarious insults and
terrifying toughness made Nola a fabulous villain!
It is hard to isolate one single storyline as my favourite,
as there were many great ones. For me now, I think it
has to be the tunnel escape and especially the lead up to
it. There was a great sense of co-operation between the
women and it was a rare time where there was little
interference or sabotage from rival prisoners. The
women were united in their revolt against Stuart
Gillespie's strict regimen. The planning, the tension and
the eventual tragedy that ensued was fantastically
entertaining. The Build up spans for about 5 or 6
episodes and there is not a dull moment in any of them. I
challenge anyone to say otherwise on this storyline. I find
it annoying to hear some say that Joan Ferguson made
Prisoner, when great storylines such as this were played
out long before she walks the walls of Wentworth.
FAN FIC OF THE MONTH
Chapter One
It was surprisingly quiet, Franky thought to herself, as she sat reading
through one of her law books in her cell. Although she had been seemingly
turning the pages of her book, no real information seemed to be sinking
in. It was if the words had no meaning, purpose, or relevance anymore. Her
concentration was impaired, and she could not focus for more than a few
seconds at a time. All she could think about was Gidget. She had a small
giggle to herself, and threw the book to the floor. She slowly laid back
against the wall, with her legs pulled tight against her chest. Closing her
eyes, all she could see was Gidget.
So many emotions were running through her, many she felt for the first
time. Trying to understand and interpret them, was proving hard for her.
She felt for the first time, something different within herself. Not lust,
desire, mind games, or a sexual desire as such, this was something else. She
felt it the second she held Gidget’s hand in the corridor, and she knew she
felt the same. Although no real words were spoken, the look in her eyes
said it all. She was if a little concerned, that the freak may have witnessed
this touching, but somehow this seemed overpowered by her feelings for
Gidget. Franky knew she would just have to see her soon, it was just a
matter of when.
Suddenly, her tranquil state was to be interrupted by a knock on her cell
door. As she rose up, she noticed Miss Bennett entering her cell. “Franky,
the governor wishes to see you, right away”. Franky looked concerned and
replied, “Does she have the hot’s for me or something, can’t it wait”. “Afraid
not”, Miss Bennett replied sternly.
23

FAN FIC OF THE MONTH
Franky let out a small sigh, and followed Miss Bennett out. As she walked
out into the corridor a few inmates were watching closely, and asked was
happening. “Oh not much, just got a dinner date with the governor”,
Franky replied, with her cheeky grin. Although she appeared unfazed by it
all, inwardly she was concerned as to the freaks intensions with her.
Miss Bennett knocked on the door, and Franky strolled in, appearing to be
tough, it was important to her not to show any sign of weakness, where the
freak was concerned, as this could be used against her. “Take a seat miss
Doyle,” the governor said, in a callous tone. “Thank you Miss Bennett that
will be all.” Franky sat sluggish in her seat, not really knowing what to
expect, but guessing it will trouble. “Miss Doyle” she said smugly, “I am
hoping you will be able to prove yourself useful to me in the coming
weeks”. “Ya joking” Franky replied, “sorry to disappoint you, but you’re not
my type”. The freak gave an evil snare. “I appreciate that Miss Doyle, it
seems clear you have interests elsewhere.” “No, I mean I am hoping you
will take your appeal seriously and provide me with the information and
help I require.” “I’m no lagger” replied Franky. “I am fairly sure Miss
Westfall’s report will prove good enough for the board, so I won’t really
need your help.” “That is a shame, a real shame, as I feel that attitude could
lead you to a life sentence.” Franky looked puzzled. The governor looked
Franky hard in the eyes and began to open the draw beside her. There, in
front of Franky she placed the voice recorder on the table, and stared
Franky out, before pushing the play button.
Chapter Two
Franky seemed puzzled for a few seconds, but the governor pushed the
play button. The next few seconds where a complete blur, Franky could
hear her own voice, and knew what was happening, but could not seem to
breath, or take in what was going on or about to evolve. As she felt the pit
of her stomach churn, she looked at the freak, who looked like she was
holding the keys to her freedom. She could not process what was
happening, or where the tape had come from.
24

FAN FIC OF THE MONTH
“Where did you get that”, Franky asked, “It’s all bullshit, I was not thinking
straight”. “I was just trying to get Bridget off my case”. “Bridget, now is it”,
the governor asked, with a smirk on her face. “Well, it all seems very real to
me, as I’m sure it will to the police”. “You’re a smart girl Miss Doyle, I am
sure you will make a smart choice, or maybe ‘Bridget’ could offer you some
support”. She seemed so smug with this remark. Franky had an
overwhelming sensation that she had been fooled by Gidget, and that her
new found love had actually been her traitor. “I will give you a few days to
think it over, that will be all”.
The walk back to her cell happened in a complete haze. Franky was feeling
too many emotions at once. She seemed to arrive back in her cell, where
she crumpled down on her bed, unable to move. She grabbed her pillow,
and hugged it, whilst letting out a huge cry. She could not believe this was
happening, or why. She soon realised she would have to toughen up, and
start to play the game again. It must have been Gidget who gave the tape to
the freak. It was a trap all along. How could she be so naïve and foolish.
There was a reason why she had trust issues, and this was why.
Overcome with emotion, Franky became irrational, and began to punch
and kick at the walls, throwing and lifting anything she could find, until
there was nothing left to throw. All the noise had alerted the officers, and
soon enough Franky found herself being dragged from the cell, punching
and screaming like a frightened child. The next few minutes were a
complete blur.
Franky soon found herself in a darkened room, and soon became aware
that she could not seem to move. She felt sluggish and lethargic, and could
not seem to focus properly. She could hear voices around her, but the
words seemed muffled and phased. She remembered vaguely being forced
to the floor in the corridor, and a sharp pain in her left arm. It was
becoming increasingly clear, that she had been sedated. Slowly her senses
started to return, and was able to see and hear more clearly. She noticed
that she felt constrained, and could not move her arms or legs. She
became aware of a familiar presence in the room next to her bed. The air
seemed dry and chilling. The freak was standing tall next to her bed,
25

FAN FIC OF THE MONTH
looking at her like a hawk watching its prey. The freak started to whisper at
her in a sympathetic tone. “Dear oh dear, Miss Doyle, I am disappointed
you have had to end up in here, I was hoping for a more positive outcome
for you”. “Still, I’m sure this will provide you with plenty of time to assess
your current situation, and options”. “ You fucking freak”, Franky replied,
“I’m not a psycho, let me out of here, remove these restraints”, “ All in good
time, when you have had time to calm down we will talk again”. “It seems
like Miss Westfall is keen to see you, despite my concerns”. Franky became
aggressive in her tone and replied, “you can tell her to go fuck herself, I’m
not interested”. The freak gave an evil smile, and turned round to leave.
“Why don’t you tell her that yourself”. Franky looked up and noticed
Gidget was entering the room.
