The big announcement this 

month is Capricorn Convention 

2014. The 2014 Convention 

coincides with Capricorn’s 

upcoming 40th anniversary, 

hence we wanted to go bigger 

and better than previous 

conventions and have planned 

something very special for you 

the Member. 

Capricorn Convention 2014 will 

be held in the magical city of Abu 

Dhabi which is the capital and the 

second largest city of the United 

Arab Emirates. Located on the 

amazing Persian Gulf, Abu Dhabi 

is a growing, cosmopolitan city 

offering world class attractions 

making it an ideal destination 

for Capricorn Convention 2014.

Capricorn Member 

Championship Winning Car 

The team at Race Torque Engineering based in Perth, Western 

Australia pride themselves on building some pretty amazing rally 

cars. From humble beginnings in 1996, David McShane and Lane 

Heenan have taken Race Torque Engineering to the next level. 

Through their involvement in Team MRF they have been thrust into 

the international spotlight by winning the 2012 Asia Pacific Rally 

Championship. 

Team MRF finished the 2012 season in brilliant style, claiming three 

Asia-Pacific Rally Championship (APRC) titles at the final event in 

China. After a fast and consistent display throughout the season, 

Australian Chris Atkinson and his Belgian co-driver, Stephane Prevot, 

clinched the championship with second place in the Chinese event. 

Team MRF also scored an emphatic victory in the Teams Trophy and 

Manufacturers championship. 

“A massive thanks to all the guys at Race Torque, ŠKODA Australia, 

Brakes Direct, MRF Tyres, the FIA APRC and, of course, all my fans 

out there. This is my first major international championship win 

and I’m rapt to pick up the APRC title here in China." said a jubilant 

Atkinson. 

Heading into the Rally China Longyou, the Race Torque-prepared 

Skoda Fabia S2000s of Atkinson and his Indian team-mate, Gaurav 

Gill, simply needed a strong finish to help secure the titles. The first 

day of the two-day rally was a good one for Team MRF, with Gill and 

Australian co-driver, Glenn Macneall, leading their nearest rival, 

Proton’s Alister McRae, by 12 seconds. 

However, Gill’s hopes of victory were dashed on the first stage of 

the second day when his car retired with mechanical problems. It 

summed up a frustrating year for the Indian, who was often the 

fastest driver on events, but bad luck meant that his only victory 

came in round two, in New Caledonia. 

Atkinson, meanwhile, won in New Zealand and Australia, and 

finished in the runner-up position in New Caledonia, Malaysia and 

in China. His winning margin in the championship was 33 points. He 

also claimed the FIA Pacific Cup for Drivers. 

In the manufacturers’ race, Skoda took maximum points on three 

of the six rounds, while consistency over the whole season enabled 

Team MRF to take a convincing 43 point win in the Teams Trophy. 

Team MRF boss, Lane Heenan, was thrilled to finish the season with 

three championship titles and praised both drivers for their efforts 

over such a diverse championship. 

“The APRC is such a challenging series, and both Chris and Gaurav 

have driven superbly this year,” Heenan said. 

“We’ve had a few technical problems that have cost us event wins, 

but overall the Race Torque Skoda Fabias have been the class of the 

field. Congratulations to Chris on his first international championship 

victory, and commiserations to Gaurav – he showed incredible speed 

this year, but luck wasn’t on his side. I’m sure the title will be his in 

the not too distant future.” 

Heenan also paid tribute to his hard working team. 

“The APRC throws everything at you, from hot, dry and dusty 

conditions to cold, wet and miserable weather. It’s not easy for the 

mechanics to work in such varying conditions, but the guys have 

once again performed brilliantly. We’re already looking ahead to 

the 2013 season and planning a successful title defence,” he added. 

Well done to the team at Race Torque Engineering on their 

championship winning efforts!

Member Rides 

This month's member ride is a show stopping 1964 EH 

Holden that is the pride and joy of Brad McCosker from 

Maker Neylon Motors in Queensland. 

The car was purchased from Kingaroy as a bare shell and 

took a total of 3 1/2 years to fully restore. The first job was 

to have the car stripped down to full bare metal and repair 

the rust. A lot of time was spent on the body with countless 

hours spent perfecting it. 

The car was painted in Dalby by Jimmy Callanan who did a 

great job. A new gearbox tunnel and modified HR Holden 

front suspension with rear mount commodore steering 

rack was installed. Koni shocks were fitted to the entire 

car. The rear boot was cut out and an alloy fuel tank fitted. 

The car was then mini tubbed to fit 275/18 tyres on rear. 

The engine bay has been fully detailed and a vintage air 

conditioning system fitted. A full leather custom interior 

was installed. A new upper dash with Dakota Digital Dash 

was fabricated and fitted. The front brakes were upgraded 

to 330mm front brake rotors with 4 piston billet alloy 

callipers. The rear brakes upgraded to 315mm rotors and 4 

piston billet callipers. 

Many thanks to Capricorn Preferred Supplier BHSS at 

Capalaba, who were a big help on the restoration project. 

Brad and his wife love to cruise in the car on the weekends 

and Brad has even driven it in Powercruise at the 

Queensland Raceway. 

Brad is still having some issues with the turbo 700 

transmission and would love to hear from any Capricorn 

Preferred Suppliers who have any suggestions.

The car was completed just days before 2012 Maguires 

Motorex in Sydney and won a bronze medal in Street Elite 

Class for it's interior. 

Member Details on Payments 

Over the last few months there have been some issues 

encountered with regards to Capricorn Member details being 

sent through when paying accounts. Recently there have 

been multiple instances of Member account payments being 

received by the Capricorn banking team with incomplete and/ 

or insufficient member details accompanying the payments. 

We encourage all Capricorn members to include their member 

number as the banking reference on payments to avoid 

processing delays and in turn, any late payment interest 

charge. 

Sending account payments through with insufficient details 

not only adds to the administrative work required to process 

them, it also creates potential problems for Capricorn Members 

who may incur a late payment interest charge. Members also 

run the risk of not having their account paid in time as payment 

processing can take longer when not accompanied with the 

correct details.

When the phone rings, 

nothing else matters 

When Alexander Graham Bell invented the first practical telephone, 

he presented it to US President Ulysses S. Grant, who commented 

‘What a great invention, but who in the world would ever want to 

use one’. 

He couldn’t possibly know that about 140 years later, everyone would 

not only want to use one, but in the world of business, to be without 

one would be corporate suicide. 

Even today, many small business operators still regard the telephone 

purely as an emergency communication device: to order parts 

quickly, to phone home, to chase up a customer. 

A phone is a lot more than a communication convenience. Every 

phone on the desk of a business is a lifeline to money and profit. 

For most people, the first contact with a vehicle workshop will be 

through a telephone conversation and what they hear on the phone 

will determine whether they do business with that workshop. The 

tone of the first conversation will establish the customer’s first set 

of expectations about the workshop and the standard of service 

they will receive. 

It’s not enough to be able to answer the telephone. Without a 

telephone handling procedure, clearly understood by everyone 

capable of picking up the phone, this communication device will 

not pay its way. 

This might seem far-fetched, but it would be possible for a business 

to be sent to the wall in a very short time if phone calls were handled 

badly, with rudeness or disinterest. The reputation of the business 

rests largely on how the phone is answered. 

When the phone rings, nothing else matters. 

There’s a simple six-step phone procedure which all businesses need 

to adopt to get the best out of Mr Bell’s great invention.

1. The greeting 

2. Ask questions, listen and take notes 

3. Build value and prescribe a course of action 

4. Assume the sale and book them in 

5. Get their details 

6. Thank them and confirm 

Even if all six points are studied and carried out to the letter, the 

phone call can still turn sour if the person answering the phone is 

having a bad day. 

So the first and most essential step in all phone handling is to slow 

down and smile just before you pick up the receiver. Believe it or 

not, the smile will travel through the copper wire and will be felt at 

the other end.

Grand Prix Racing in the USA 

Some 225,000 people attended the 2012 United States Formula One Grand Prix held at the brand new 

Circuit of the Americas in the Texas capital city of Austin last November. This came after a five year Formula 

One hiatus from the United States, one of several Formula One stateside sabbaticals that would take place 

through the decades. 

The struggle to capture one of the largest consumer markets in the world, as Formula One motor racing has 

done so successfully in Europe, the Middle East and Australasia over many years relates more to consistency 

and the profound American parochial nature more than anything else. There is a firm sports and political 

mindset within America that considers their country as the entire world, evidenced partly by calling their 

major Baseball finals series the “World Series” when it is of course only held in the USA! 

The most used permanent circuit for the staging of the US Formula One Grand Prix was Watkins Glen in 

upstate New York, which held 20 Grands Prix. This was the only truly consistent run of the United States 

Grand Prix in its history when it became very popular. Other permanent American circuits used for Formula 

One include the first venue, Sebring (Florida) in 1959, along with Riverside in California and the Indianapolis 

Motor Speedway, Indiana. The Indianapolis experience was interesting, using part of the super-speedway 

used for the Indy 500 coupled with an infield road circuit at the United States’ and some would say the world’s 

capital of motor racing. But even there it didn’t last. 

So why was Austin’s inaugural Grand Prix last year so popular? The circuit’s location had a lot to do with 

it, drawing in fans from Mexico and other parts of South America due to its proximity, while Austin 

too is more of a cosmopolitan and quirky American city, (signs at the entrance to the city state “Keep 

Austin Weird”). whereas many of the past locations were just not suited to what is a heavily European 

influenced sporting event. 

Another reason is that Austin’s Circuit of The Americas is a real racing circuit, lending itself to excellent 

high speed television viewing with several overtaking opportunities. It was constructed on 320 hectares 

of land to the east of the city. The 5.5 kilometre Hermann Tilke designed circuit features 20 corners, 11 

left and 9 right and saw maximum speeds in excess of 315kph during the 2012 event. The average lap 

speed of 200kph has it up there with the fastest, with 60 percent of the lap spent at full throttle. The 

drivers, the media and the fans loved it. 

How will Australia’s V8 Supercar 

Championship fare in Austin? We will find 

out from May 17 to 19 this year as the series 

ventures stateside to Austin for its 5th 

Round, the Texas 400. It will be interesting 

to see how our Aussie V8’s are supported 

at this venue along with it being the first 

ever American V8 Supercar race. 

FE ATURE 

There have been five street circuit venues used for the US Formula One Grand Prix headed by Long Beach, 

Las Vegas, Detroit, Dallas and Phoenix. Besides the Long Beach event, which ran from 1976 to 1983 and 

never had a repeat winner, the others were absolute stinkers. 

Take Las Vegas for example. The promoters there decided that the Caesar’s Palace car park would be a good 

place for a Formula One Grand Prix held in the stifling Nevada Desert summer. Detroit’s downtown street 

circuit never really captured the imagination of US and international racing fans. Dallas was a total disaster 

that lasted for just one event due to the circuit actually breaking up due to the immense heat. Phoenix was 

so popular that when it was last staged, an Ostrich race held in the town’s outskirts actually attracted more 

spectators!
