POT LUCK
In Pot Luck you may find many of your favourite plants, as well as some rare and unusual offerings. All plants have been collected from gardens of members and friends of
VanDusen Botanical Garden Association, and some come from VanDusen Garden itself. Of course we can’t always be sure of the colour or exact botanical identity, hence the
name – ‘Pot Luck.’ This year we have been working hard to bring you a wide selection of plants, at very good prices. The Pot Luck section has many plants to help create year
round interest in your garden or on your balcony, including many selections for small spaces.
Knowledgeable volunteers are happy to help you with your choices and to make suggestions. Baskets and containers, already potted up with select plants for sun or shade,
will be available. Our group pots plants in the fall, and also in the spring. If you can help by donating plants for next year's sale, please call VanDusen Garden (604-257-8666)
and ask for the phone number of the Pot Luck Coordinator.
FUCHSIAS
Fuchsias are a rewarding, and interesting, flowering plant for the home gardener in the Pacific Northwest. They come in over 1000 varieties,
and can be grown as trailing annuals in baskets, or as hardy plants in the ground. Fuchsias bloom from early summer to early autumn.
Colour combinations range from white to red, pink to purple. Some newer varieties also come in various shades of orange or aubergine.
Although fuchsias are not fragrant, hummingbirds are attracted to nectar from the colourful flowers.
Semi-hardy fuchsias (trailers): ‘Dusky Rose’; ‘Marshmallow’; ‘Red Spider’; ‘Southgate’; ‘Springtime’; ‘Winston Churchill’
Variegated leaf varieties: Fuchsia magellanica ‘Tricolor’ – Bright red flowers; Fuchsia ‘Golden Marinka’ – Trailing fuchsia, red flowers
Hardy fuchsias : Fuchsia magellanica gracilis; Fuchsia magellanica ‘Alba’; Fuchsia magellanica ‘Aurea’ – Chartreuse foliage;
Fuchsia x hybrida cv. ‘Island Sunset – Gray-green foliage with creamy white edges, flower red/purple; Fuchsia ‘Otto’ – Flower red/purple-blue
This year we’ll have some mixed baskets available.
Growing requirements for non-hardy fuchsias (annuals) are as follows:
Morning sun, dappled or partial shade all day (or facing north).
Feed with a quick-release water-soluble fertilizer every 2 weeks. They love water and should never dry out.
Soil should be high in organic matter, and have both excellent water holding and drainage capability.
Pinch the new growth tip for bushiness, which will result in more flowers.
Planting all of the same variety in one basket makes a much nicer show.
Over-wintering:
Hardy fuchsias are treated much the same as any perennial, but may require mulching in exposed areas.
Annuals may be stored in greenhouses, garages, basements and/or mudrooms. Prune back in the spring and enjoy for another year.
GERANIUMS (PELARGONIUMS)
This year most of the plants will be zonal geraniums. They have this name because of the dark markings on the leaf.
They will be available in four colours; red, pink, salmon and white. There will also be trailing geraniums in a variety of colours.
All varieties are suitable for planting in the garden, and are an excellent choice for planters, pots and hanging baskets.
Geraniums bloom continuously through the summer and into the fall until the first hard frost.
