Club Reports
It was a nice morning, sun was out, and we were getting ready to face the army of orange and blue. There was plenty
of talk during the warm up to help us get focused on the game ahead. It showed! We came out fighting, pressuring
Camberwell’s defence having multiple opportunities. It was obvious that the practice of the “deep bowl” was useful,
moving the ball well around the back really well and with pa(i)ce! We had multiple corners in the first half where we
could have sealed the game but we were unable to convert any of them. For the second week in a row we went into
half time 0-0.
We came out in the second half, just like in the first, moving the ball well. Still making opportunities for ourselves but
not converting our chances. In the mean time, Camberwell managed to score two quick goals. We had multiple
penalty corners midway through the second half which could have evened out the game; but with only a couple of
minutes to go Camberwell scored their third goal from a short corner. For the second week in a row the Dees went
down by 3 goals in the second half! We did play very well for the whole game, just needing to convert our
opportunities! Fortune, apparently, favours the brave - still only 1 point frim 4th and 3 points from 3rd.
Womens Pennant C
Our aim this week was to score two goals - which we did! Keeley Brown got a great deflection in the opening few
minutes. Then Sally Cunnington belted one in from the top of the circle - we were 2-0 up at half time - it was all going
to plan! However, this team that had beaten us 3-1 earlier in the season came right at us in the second half and got
one in. We showed determination to keep them away from our goal in the last 5 minutes but we had played out
hearts out and exhaustion kicked in, and they got the equaliser. It was disappointing not to clinch the win, but our
performance is definitely improving week by week and we will be back full throttle after our week off!
Mens Metro 4 East (The Gentlemens Academy of Excellence)
The temperature was in single digits as the students of the Academy showed up for the prime time Sunday night TV
slot. With the club having a bad weekend with losses, the Academy were determined to turn the fortunes of MCC
around with a resounding win. The Academy showed early promise but early lapses in concentration allowed the
opposition to sneak through two early goals. Hopes were dashed of a quick recovery after “the Ant incident”, where
a stray Ant-1 (Ant Hocking) clearance hit Ant-2 (Ant Bowen) in the face, forcing him to leave the field which left the
Academy with no more reserves. Some quick play in the second half saw a great goal to Adam Foster and MCC were
back in with a sniff. However the Academy fell into some basic errors, such as not looking before passing, holding the
ball too long & failing to find the sticks of team mates which resulted in easy turnovers to the opposition & two
further goals.Possibly the highlight of the night came with “Red Card Ragu” living up to his nickname, earning an
early rest for the game after a run in with the umpire. Most felt the send off a bit harsh, given that “Red Card” was
merely pointing out the correct location to stand for a player who has just received a yellow card (the only problem
being the player who received this yellow card was Ragu himself). The opposition scored two late goals, leaving the
final score at 6-1. So after a confidence busting loss, the Academy now has a week off to re-group, re-focus and come
back ready to push themselves back into the top four during the run to the finals.
Master D West
D West headed out to H-2 on Monday night to take on the no.1 team Hawthorn
General Points MCC Hawthorn
Players over 70 1 0
Players Under 50 1 13
Females 3 0
Great saves by the defence 12 3
Goals scored in first half 0 5
Goals scored in second half 0 1
Goal chances in second half 4 6
Conclusion – we should only turn up at half time to play, therefore we would have only lost 1-0.

Super Master 50+ B Grade
Early game at the State Hockey Centre when the traffic was absolute chaos. Just had 7 players at the deadline of
7.10 pm and able to hold off Footscray's 11 players plus interchange for around 10 minutes. Eventually numbers
started to arrive and gradually got to a full team by half time. The team then settle into good movement with the
ball which eventually resulted in a breakway goal to Ron. Short corner for them led to a flick well saved by Don. End
result a good 1 - 0 win.
LEVEL ONE COACHING COURSE
The Central Metro Zone is offering (at no-cost) a Level 1 Coach practical course to be run over two mornings at
Melbourne High School.
SUNDAY July 29th 8.30am-11.00am and SUNDAY August 12th 8.30am-11.00am
Please note that Hockey Australia charge a registration fee of $40 to be accredited as a Level 1 Coach. Many clubs
will reimburse or subsidise this fee for coaches who are active within their club.
Many of you will know John Mowat, who will be running the practical course. John was a head coach of Victorian
hockey for 20 years, with 10 years as head coach of the women and 10 years with the men (VIS). He is now the game
In order to make the course viable, we require a minimum of 8 participants. Please note that there are 4 components
to the Level 1 accreditation, of which the practical course is only ONE (it is, however, the most time consuming and
difficult to get ticked off).

Hockey specific online training program, including an applied learning quiz which takes approximately one to two hours to
complete
Level 1 Coaching general principles online course developed by the Australia Sports Commission (ASC) that takes between two
and five hours to complete
A practical evaluation of one training session and one match as a coach.
A 1 Day Practical Course, Conducted by your State Association
The online components are available once you register with Hockey Australia.
All participants in the practical course MUST complete the online components PRIOR to attending the practical
Once the online and practical components have been completed (and verification documents sited) we will arrange a
practical evaluation of a training session and a match to complete the Level 1 Accreditation.
