So, what are we going to do about it? Well, let’s start as we did right back at the 

beginning. Let’s show some great films to some great audiences (that’s you). 

In the coming months we’ve got two Cannes favourites, Palme D’or winner BLUE IS 

THE WARMEST COLOUR and Clio Barnard’s follow up to THE ARBOR, THE SELFISH GIANT. 

Leeds International Film Festival will again take over our beloved building from the 08th 

November for two weeks then towards the end of the year we’ve got some amazing festive 

specials including our annual favourite, IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE. And how shall we bid

With such a lot of films out there it’s easy to see how great titles sometimes

Clio Barnard follows up 

docudrama THE ARBOR with 

another pitch-perfect portrayal 

of working-class families in strife. 

Inspired loosely by Oscar Wilde’s 

THE SELFISH GIANT, it concerns 

13-year-old Bradford lad Arbor, a 

mouthy rebel who’d rather steal 

and sell scrap metal than go to 

school. And his best friend Swifty, 

a gentle boy twice his size and 

with half the confidence. 

Blending social realism with 

plentiful myth and symbolism, 

Barnard renders THE SELFISH 

GIANT both entertaining and 

deeply moving. Newcomer 

Chapman is a find as little Arbor, 

his cocky backchat delivering 

plenty of laughs to lighten the 

load, while Thomas, also a 

first-time actor, brings heart with 

a terrific performance as Swifty.

PRINCE AVALANCHE is a comical 

two-hander about an unlikely 

couple of road-maintenance 

workers, who develop an 

uneasy friendship while tasked 

with re-painting road lines in 

the aftermath of devastating 

Texas forest fires in 1988. The 

non-diegetic twist is that similar 

devastation in 2011 provided 

the shooting location – the 

charred landscape providing a 

suitably unreal backdrop to the 

pair’s quasi-Sisyphean work. This 

quietly philosophical road movie 

modestly reaches for existentialist 

overtones and is a refreshing 

return to familiar form for fans of 

Green’s earlier work.

film, Arendt’s trial reportage – 

which coined the phrase ‘the 

banality of evil’ – and the storm 

that followed its publication, 

provide the main planks of von

30 years. It’s a disheartening 

statistic, but one that has inspired 

award-winning filmmaker David 

Bond, who, keen for future

dreamed up PROJECT WILD 

THING. The film itself is only one 

part of Bond’s campaign, which 

enlists a number of scientists, 

nature experts, sociologists, as 

well as the National Trust, to 

sell nature to kids. A charming 

exercise in creative, sociallyminded

rapturous acclaim, NOTHING BUT 

A MAN failed to transcend the 

cosmopolitan arthouse circuit. 

Now, however, Roemer’s film is 

considered both a landmark of 

American neorealism, and one 

of the most important pieces of 

African-American cinema. The 

film tells the tale of Duff: a black 

railroad-worker struggling to lead 

a respectable life in the face 

of racist oppression, as well as 

antipathy from those within the 

black community who do not 

wish to have the peace disturbed.

rockets that became the

some wonderful interviews with

The plaintive sound of bluegrass 

music runs through this roller 

coaster of a romantic drama, 

which was a huge continental hit 

and is Belgium’s official entry for 

Best Foreign-Language Film at the 

2014 Oscars. Banjo-player Didier 

and singer Elise are a blissfully 

happy couple, but when their sixyear-old 

daughter Maybelle falls ill, 

their lives are turned upside down 

and personal recriminations 

threaten to wreck their 

relationship. Multi-award winning 

director Van Groeningen’s (THE 

MISFORTUNATES) inspired edits, 

and the heartfelt performances 

from the principal players, are 

consistently mesmerising. 

Written by Pulitzer Prize-winner 

Cormac McCarthy (NO COUNTRY 

FOR OLD MEN), THE COUNSELLOR is 

McCarthy’s first original screenplay 

and according to director Ridley 

Scott, ‘one of the best screenplays 

I have ever read’. The titular 

counsellor is a hotshot lawyer 

who begins to work for a billiondollar 

drug-trafficking industry, and 

quickly finds his world unravelling 

in a violent, ferocious fashion. Set 

in the sweltering southern states 

of the US and beyond, fans of 

the screenwriter will recognise 

this as McCarthy’s world. And 

combined with Scott’s directing 

and an impressive cast list, THE 

COUNSELLOR is a must see. 

Chronicling the emergence of 

the ACT UP and TAG coalitions 

and their struggle to turn AIDS 

from ‘a death sentence into 

a manageable condition’ in 

the early 1980s, award winning 

journalist David France’s debut 

is not just a moving chronicle of 

a significant period of activism, 

but a tale of people taking on the 

system, and winning. 

This screening has been 

programmed to coincide with 

World AIDS day. 

Sandra Prechtel’s documentary 

takes a look into the life of Roland 

Klick, who’s rocky career in the 

German film industry has seen 

him ousted from films and at 

odds with producers. The director, 

who defies all categories, reveals 

himself as humorous and far 

from embittered. Excerpts from 

his films and comments from 

contemporaries such as Eva 

Mattes and Otto Sander round off 

this portrait of a class-conscious 

director; a man for whom film was 

not about ‘telling those up there 

about those down there’, but who 

also made his films for those who 

otherwise probably don’t give a 

hoot for cinema. 

Alexander Payne returns to his 

home state of Nebraska for this 

ode to small-town life in the 

midwest. A bittersweet road movie 

from the director of SIDEWAYS and 

THE DESCENDANTS with a careercrowning 

performance from 

Bruce Dern. 

“At its best, it shows Payne’s 

capacity for a melancholic 

humanism that captures a 

consummate mixture of tragedy 

and comedy” 

David Jenkins, LITTLE WHITE LIES. 

Gloria is a 58-year-old Chilean 

making the most of her freedom 

as a divorcee – but inwardly 

hoping to find romance for one 

last time. Out one night she 

meets the recently divorced 

Rodolfo, who seems to share 

the same hunger for new life 

and new love – but he isn’t 

quite what he seems. Lelio’s 

script posts sly observations on 

Chile’s acquisitive middle classes 

and their moral impotence. 

And García’s mesmerising 

performance, one moment 

achingly vulnerable, the next 

confidently resilient, is reason 

alone to see this Berlin Festival 

award winner. 

The backwater town of Muscle 

Shoals, Alabama, has long been 

a hotbed of musical creativity 

ever since the early 60s, when 

wannabe-producer Rick Hall 

opened a studio there. Since 

then, musical greats such as

were almost entirely devoted to news of World War One, but a small 

advert announced the opening of a new Picture House, proudly 

proclaiming itself to be “The Cosiest in Leeds”.
