When you read a text that has a lot of information, 

summarize each section as you read. Read the 

heading and then read the text. Do not try to 

remember all the details. Write one main idea after 

each heading to summarize the information. 

Fossil fuels such as oil, natural gas, and coal are used as energy – for transportation 

and industry. They also have everyday uses for lighting, heating, and electricity. Fossil 

fuels are a non-renewable resource. Countries around the world need fossil fuels, but 

not all countries have their own. 

Discovery 

Landforms are a clue that helps 

geologists find fossil fuels. Oil is 

found in sedimentary rock. Geologists 

know, for example, that millions of 

years ago, the Canadian Shield had 

oceans around its edges. This tells 

them that the sediment in these 

oceans settled around the shield. As 

a result, geologists in Canada explore 

land to the east, west, and north of 

the Canadian Shield to find oil. They 

map where the oil might be located.

Oil is a fossil fuel taken from the earth by drilling wells. Canada’s main oil supplies are 

in Alberta’s oil sands and off the coast of Newfoundland–Labrador at Hibernia – where 

the oil is under the ocean floor. When oil is found near the surface, as it is in Alberta, 

companies dig an open pit mine. Digging equipment moves the rock and dirt on top 

away, and then the oil is removed. If the oil deposits are far below ground, drills must

In factories, new technologies resulted in more and faster 

production and the start-up of new industries. For example, the 

steam engine was used in many different inventions, including 

cars, trains, and mining machinery. 

Technology and Agriculture 

By 1867, power-driven machines had replaced hand tools on 

most farms. A steam threshing machine could harvest more in 

one day than most farmers could harvest by hand in one year. 

Steam-powered tractors could pull a plough that cut three 

furrows (trenches) at the same time. Horse-drawn ploughs 

could cut only one furrow at a time. Canada’s wheat yield went 

from 490 000 tonnes in 1896 to 2 123 000 tonnes by 1911 

because of this new technology.

In cities, travel by horse-drawn carriages was being replaced by 

electric streetcars. Cars were too expensive for most people to 

buy. Two new transcontinental railways were built to help move 

people and products across Canada. The Canadian Pacific Railway 

could not handle all the transportation needs of the country.

Quest for the Bay recreates the voyage of 19thcentury 

fur traders. Eight participants, equipped 

with only period supplies, travel an historic and 

often treacherous fur-trade route along Manitoba’s 

waterways in an authentic 12-metre (39 ft) York 

boat. They begin at the juncture of the Red and 

Assiniboine rivers and paddle 1200 km (746 

miles) to York Factory on Hudson Bay. With 

muscle, resourcefulness, and plenty of stubborn 

determination, the crew battle the Canadian 

wilderness. 

This edition of Quest for the Bay has been adapted 

specifically for school audiences from the original 

television series. Special attention has been given to 

create a version of the program that is appropriate
