CREATING INDEPENDENT STUDENT LEARNERS SERIES
Practical Guides to Assessment for Learning
By Pauline Clarke, Thompson Owens, and Ruth Sutton
For School Leaders For Nursery–Grade 3 For Grades 4–6 For Grades 7–9
Creating Independent Student
Learners is a series that guides teachers
and administrators in applying best
principles of assessment for learning. Based
on a three-year project in the Inner City
District of Winnipeg School Division,
the books provide a written mentorship,
showing how “assessment for learning”
principles can help teachers improve their
daily lessons.
THESE BOOKS ARE FOR
TEACHERS WHO
• feel burdened by the demands to cover more
• want to apply assessment for learning to
their own classrooms
• want to help their students become
more independent
• want to make sure their students have the
essential skills to succeed when they move
on to the next grade level
The Creating Independent Student Learners series consists of four books. Three
are for classroom teachers and are divided by grade level: N–3, 4–6, and 7–9. The fourth
book, for school leaders, shows how to best support teachers so that implementation is
successful and sustained.
For Grades N–9 Teachers. Each grade-level book shows classroom teachers how to use
a practical eight-step approach to simplify their classroom practice. These steps provide a
framework for incorporating assessment for learning into any lesson plan.
• Steps 1–3: Beginning the lesson: setting the learning targets
• Steps 4–7: The core of the lesson: handing over the learning to students
• Step 8: Concluding the lesson: helping students acquire the language of learning
For School Leaders. The fourth book in the series discusses how to implement change
in schools and districts. This book takes the many abstract issues of implementing change,
and grounds them with the practical experience and examples from the authors’ work
in the Inner City District of Winnipeg School Division and other international school
districts. The result is a narrative account that skillfully deals with the practical questions
facing school leaders: Where do we start? What do we need to pay attention to? How will
we manage in the long term?
ASSESSMENT & LEARNING
The ICE Approach
By Sue Fostaty Young and Robert J. Wilson
For all teachers
Maximize student learning through an improved
understanding and appreciation of the learning
process. ICE represents the three stages of learning:
Ideas, Connections, and Extensions. The authors
show how to recognize these stages of learning
development—from a state of beginning to one of
competence and expertise—and demonstrate how
educators can foster that development in their
classrooms. No matter what subject or grade level,
the ICE approach will provide teachers with the
ability to encourage and assess learning progress.
DILEMMAS IN CLASSROOM
ASSESSMENT
And What to Do About Them
By Robert J. Wilson
For all teachers
This book is a collaboration of experienced
educators—each writing a chapter that relates directly
to the author’s experiences and understanding of a
specific assessment issue. Each chapter begins with
an authentic classroom scenario many teachers will
recognize; then the author raises an assessment
dilemma and offers useful information and practical
guidance for classroom teachers to follow.
Whether beginning or experienced, teachers can relate to
each scenario. Whether déjà vu or a brand new challenge,
the reader connects to each and every scenario and either
is belatedly offered a solution, or given an avenue for
resolution.
Criteria are the standards by which something can be judged or valued. When we set criteria, we are
deciding what counts. When students take part in developing criteria, they are much more likely to
understand what is expected of them, “buy in,” and then accomplish the task successfully. In this book,
the authors show ways to involve students in developing criteria for their own projects and assignments.
This book includes practical ideas, cross-curricular examples, 10 assessment methods that focus on
criteria, responses to commonly asked questions, and reproducible masters.
An Illustrated Exploration of Drawingas-Language
By Bob Steele
For grades PreK–12
This lavishly illustrated book reintroduces the reader
to children’s drawings. Just as spoken and written
languages exist to convey meaning, so do children’s
drawings. Whether crude or very detailed, they are
rendered to “say something.” In fact, in a drawing,
children can capture degrees of sophistication in
perception, understanding, and emotion far beyond
their literacy level. The author believes that drawing is
When you read a text that has a lot of information,
each heading to summarize the information.
Fossil fuels such as oil, natural gas, and coal are used as energy – for transportation
and industry. They also have everyday uses for lighting, heating, and electricity. Fossil
fuels are a non-renewable resource. Countries around the world need fossil fuels, but
not all countries have their own.
Discovery
Landforms are a clue that helps
geologists find fossil fuels. Oil is
found in sedimentary rock. Geologists
know, for example, that millions of
years ago, the Canadian Shield had
oceans around its edges. This tells
them that the sediment in these
oceans settled around the shield. As
a result, geologists in Canada explore
land to the east, west, and north of
the Canadian Shield to find oil. They
map where the oil might be located.
Oil is a fossil fuel taken from the earth by drilling wells. Canada’s main oil supplies are
in Alberta’s oil sands and off the coast of Newfoundland–Labrador at Hibernia – where
the oil is under the ocean floor. When oil is found near the surface, as it is in Alberta,
companies dig an open pit mine. Digging equipment moves the rock and dirt on top
away, and then the oil is removed. If the oil deposits are far below ground, drills must
be used. The type of mine that is created depends on how deep the deposit of fossil
fuel is below the surface of the Earth.
Many students have difficulty reading
geography textbooks. Students often
struggle with the organization of
textbooks, the complexity of the
information presented, the concept
load, and the unfamiliar vocabulary.
In addition to problems presented by
the texts, students themselves often
have limited comprehension and
reading skills.
Reading Geography provides texts
developed for these students. Each
book in the series presents the
information students need to be
successful, through short, concise
readings that are written well below
grade level. A consistent format is
used to allow students to understand
the organizational structure of each
lesson and of the unit. Charts,
diagrams, and graphic organizers are
incorporated to help make complex
geography concepts accessible. Each
reading also includes an appropriate
reading strategy to help student
comprehension.
Reading Geography includes three
units and a Teacher’s Guide. The
three units for grade 7 are
• Unit 1: The Five Themes
of Geography
• Unit 2: Patterns in
The Impact of
Technology
In factories, new technologies resulted in more and faster
production and the start-up of new industries. For example, the
steam engine was used in many different inventions, including
cars, trains, and mining machinery.
Technology and Agriculture
By 1867, power-driven machines had replaced hand tools on
most farms. A steam threshing machine could harvest more in
one day than most farmers could harvest by hand in one year.
Steam-powered tractors could pull a plough that cut three
furrows (trenches) at the same time. Horse-drawn ploughs
could cut only one furrow at a time. Canada’s wheat yield went
from 490 000 tonnes in 1896 to 2 123 000 tonnes by 1911
because of this new technology.
Strategies for Learning
Technology and Transportation
In cities, travel by horse-drawn carriages was being replaced by
electric streetcars. Cars were too expensive for most people to
buy. Two new transcontinental railways were built to help move
people and products across Canada. The Canadian Pacific Railway
could not handle all the transportation needs of the country.
As you read, make connections. Underline parts of
the text where you made a connection to a personal
experience, to another text you have read or viewed,
or to events in the world today.
