Dear Teacher,
Your student, _______________________________________, has applied to be a Cabin Leader at The Mosaic
Project’s Outdoor School for the week of ________________________.
The Mosaic Project, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, works towards a peaceful future by reaching children in
their formative years. We unite young children of diverse backgrounds, provide them with essential skills to
thrive in an increasingly diverse society, and empower them to strive for peace.
Three 4th or 5th grade classes, from schools differing markedly in socioeconomic, racial, and ethnic make-up,
jointly participate in each 4-night/5-day session of our unique Outdoor School. While typical outdoor schools
focus on environmental science, ours focuses on addressing issues of difference and on building self-esteem and
community.
In conjunction with this program, we offer our Youth Leadership Project for high-school students who serve as
mentors and cabin leaders for the 4th and 5th graders. The training focuses on the celebration of diversity,
awareness of stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination, respect for and appreciation of self and others,
teamwork and cooperation, communication and nonviolent conflict resolution, and mentorship skills.
Each high-school student will attend a weekend training retreat prior to the outdoor school experience. During
the outdoor school session, the students will have the opportunity to apply lessons learned and also will receive
an additional two hours of training, check-in, and feedback time each day. We will also offer tutoring as needed
during the one-hour mandatory study hall each day.
In addition to your permission, The Mosaic Project requests that teachers let us know what school work will be
required of the students during their week with us. The tutors will use this information to direct the energies of
the students during study hall. The attached form provides space to list assignments; please attach any
additional information. Thank you for enabling us to provide this exciting opportunity for your student.
Sincerely,
Lara Mendel
