Proudly wearing the colors <strong>of</strong> Nigeria, L<strong>at</strong>via, France and the<br />
Netherlands Antilles, an all-star group <strong>of</strong> Miner track and<br />
field <strong>at</strong>hletes pushed their bodies to the limit in pursuit <strong>of</strong><br />
victory <strong>at</strong> the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.<br />
It was an unforgettable experience for the Miners, who soaked in<br />
the intern<strong>at</strong>ional flavors <strong>of</strong> the event, including the spectacular colors,<br />
music and acrob<strong>at</strong>ic choreography <strong>of</strong> the opening ceremony in<br />
Beijing N<strong>at</strong>ional Stadium.<br />
Popularly known as the “Bird’s Nest” for its distinctive architecture,<br />
the stadium was the site for the Olympic track and field events.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Miners won three bronze medals, bringing pride to <strong>UTEP</strong> and<br />
their home countries.<br />
“It shows we’re on the world scene,” says <strong>UTEP</strong> Track and Field<br />
Head Coach Bob Kitchens. “We’ve had Miners particip<strong>at</strong>e in the<br />
Olympics in some form over the years, and each time it’s just as exciting<br />
to w<strong>at</strong>ch these <strong>at</strong>hletes give it their best.”<br />
Former <strong>UTEP</strong> <strong>at</strong>hletes won five medals <strong>at</strong> the 1984 Los Angeles<br />
Olympics.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Olympians are further testament to the longtime success <strong>of</strong> the<br />
program. <strong>The</strong> <strong>UTEP</strong> Track and Field Hall <strong>of</strong> Fame boasts a who’s<br />
who <strong>of</strong> world-class <strong>at</strong>hletes, including Robert “Bob” Beamon, who<br />
held the long jump record for 23 years after winning gold in the<br />
1968 Mexico City Games; and world champion sprinter Bert Cameron,<br />
who won a silver medal in the 4 x 400 relay in the 1988 Summer<br />
Olympics.<br />
