your child?
UCAN Academy is a year-round therapeutic
day school serving grades K-12. We offer our
students the supportive instruction they need
both inside and outside of the classroom in
order to improve their educational experience.
Each child enrolled in UCAN Academy comes
with a unique set of needs. In striving to meet
these needs, we use a staff-intense environment
to meet the needs of the individual student. Our
children, while coming from diverse and distinct
backgrounds, share one common trait: They have
all experienced difficulties in public or private
school settings. Many have become discouraged
about learning. We help them see schooling in
a positive light and reach their highest potential.
UCAN Academy Elementary serves grades
K-8. UCAN Academy High School serves
grades 9-12. The Academy is one of many
programs offered to youth and families in the
Chicagoland area by UCAN. Let our trained,

Elementary and High School

Our learning
environment
Your child deserves the best possible learning
environment. Our location at 3110 W. Grand
Avenue, with 30,000 sq. ft., is spacious, well
maintained, and clean providing a safe, quiet
learning environment.
Our curriculum
We strive to prepare each child academically, behaviorally, and
socially for life after graduation.
Our classrooms are geared to small teaching
sessions and equipped to meet individual
learning needs. Our cafeteria serves a nutritious
breakfast and lunch daily. A large recreational
space allows the children to enjoy physical
education and activities year-round. The gym
was recently updated by the Chicago Bull’s
EnergizaBulls with state of the art weight
machines, stationary bikes and a variety of
interactive fitness instruction games and
classes. Intramural sports (flag football,
basketball, track and field, softball) are also
offered for high school students.
Students receive instruction and academic
programming based on their Individual Education
Plan (IEP). There is a strong emphasis in reading
and math across all subjects. Student’s academic
progress is monitored through the use of Aims Web.
This data assists staff in making academic decisions
regarding instruction and course placement. A
variety of interventions are used to assist students
in achieving their academic potential, such as
Read 180. High school electives and elementary
clubs also help to maintain student motivation
and interest. Our High School curriculum meets
Chicago Public Schools graduation requirements
by combining computer technology with Special
Education methods.
Computer technology is integral to our entire
curriculum though the use of SmartBoards in the
classroom. In addition to two fully-equipped computer
labs which offer interactive learning programs and
internet access, classrooms also contain PCs for
student use and laptops for all teachers.
Our specialized staff offers a variety of supportive
services including speech and occupational therapy
and therapeutic guidance to promote personal
accountability, problem-solving, and conflict
resolution skills. Students also have the opportunity to
participate in number a of groups such as classroom
groups, Let’s Make A Deal, Project Visible Man,
Expressive Art, Freshman Boys, Healthy Girls,
Exercise Group, Student Council, Adolescent Group
and Phenomenal Woman. A school-wide behavior
intervention program focusing on academic and
social-emotional goals is in place to teach students
positive behaviors through positive reinforcement,
and helps to encourage academic accountability.

FACULTY AND STAFF
Our experienced, fully-trained staff and faculty meet
all State of Illinois requirements. Our faculty and
administrative staff have over thirty years experience.
This includes certified Special Education Teachers,
social workers and trained crisis intervention staff
with excellent de-escalation skills in dealing with
students. In addition, every classroom has teacher
assistants available to help with individual student
needs. We also have a Licensed and Registered
nurse on staff to meet the needs of our students.

ABOUT UCAN
For over a century, UCAN has served as a safe
harbor for traumatized youth and families atrisk.
UCAN serves over 10,000 youth each
year through a variety of programs aimed at
healing trauma, educating youth and families
and preventing violence.
HOME AND FAMILY
We are committed to working with you in achieving
your child’s goals. In addition to regularly scheduled
parent/teacher conferences, we are always available
to meet with you to discuss your child’s progress.
We try to assist all parents through home visitation,
identification of areas of difficulty such as attendance,
and finding additional community services for their
children. We also welcome parent involvement
in all our school activities.
