<strong>UCAN</strong> Academy is a year-round therapeutic<br />
day school serving grades K-12. We <strong>offer</strong> our<br />
students the supportive instruction they need<br />
both inside and outside of the classroom in<br />
order to improve their educational experience.<br />
Each <strong>child</strong> enrolled in <strong>UCAN</strong> Academy comes<br />
with a unique set of needs. In striving to meet<br />
these needs, <strong>we</strong> use a staff-intense environment<br />
to meet the needs of the individual student. Our<br />
<strong>child</strong>ren, while coming from diverse and distinct<br />
backgrounds, share one common trait: They have<br />
all experienced difficulties in public or private<br />
school settings. Many have become discouraged<br />
about learning. We help them see schooling in<br />
a positive light and reach their highest potential.<br />
<strong>UCAN</strong> Academy Elementary serves grades<br />
K-8. <strong>UCAN</strong> Academy High School serves<br />
grades 9-12. The Academy is one of many<br />
programs <strong>offer</strong>ed to <strong>you</strong>th and families in the<br />
Chicagoland area by <strong>UCAN</strong>. Let our trained,<br />

academic success.<br />
Elementary and High School
Our learning<br />
environment<br />
Your <strong>child</strong> deserves the best possible learning<br />
environment. Our location at 3110 W. Grand<br />
Avenue, with 30,000 sq. ft., is spacious, <strong>we</strong>ll<br />
maintained, and clean providing a safe, quiet<br />
learning environment.<br />

Our curriculum<br />
We strive to prepare each <strong>child</strong> academically, behaviorally, and<br />
socially for life after graduation.<br />
Our classrooms are geared to small teaching<br />
sessions and equipped to meet individual<br />
learning needs. Our cafeteria serves a nutritious<br />
breakfast and lunch daily. A large recreational<br />
space allows the <strong>child</strong>ren to enjoy physical<br />
education and activities year-round. The gym<br />
was recently updated by the Chicago Bull’s<br />
EnergizaBulls with state of the art <strong>we</strong>ight<br />
machines, stationary bikes and a variety of<br />
interactive fitness instruction games and<br />
classes. Intramural sports (flag football,<br />
basketball, track and field, softball) are also<br />
<strong>offer</strong>ed for high school students.<br />
Students receive instruction and academic<br />
programming based on their Individual Education<br />
Plan (IEP). There is a strong emphasis in reading<br />
and math across all subjects. Student’s academic<br />
progress is monitored through the use of Aims Web.<br />
This data assists staff in making academic decisions<br />
regarding instruction and course placement. A<br />
variety of interventions are used to assist students<br />
in achieving their academic potential, such as<br />
Read 180. High school electives and elementary<br />
clubs also help to maintain student motivation<br />
and interest. Our High School curriculum meets<br />
Chicago Public Schools graduation requirements<br />
by combining computer technology with Special<br />
Education methods.<br />
Computer technology is integral to our entire<br />
curriculum though the use of SmartBoards in the<br />
classroom. In addition to two fully-equipped computer<br />
labs which <strong>offer</strong> interactive learning programs and<br />
internet access, classrooms also contain PCs for<br />
student use and laptops for all teachers.<br />
Our <strong>special</strong>ized staff <strong>offer</strong>s a variety of supportive<br />
services including speech and occupational therapy<br />
and therapeutic guidance to promote personal<br />
accountability, problem-solving, and conflict<br />
resolution skills. Students also have the opportunity to<br />
participate in number a of groups such as classroom<br />
groups, Let’s Make A Deal, Project Visible Man,<br />
Expressive Art, Freshman Boys, Healthy Girls,<br />
Exercise Group, Student Council, Adolescent Group<br />
and Phenomenal Woman. A school-wide behavior<br />
intervention program focusing on academic and<br />
social-emotional goals is in place to teach students<br />
positive behaviors through positive reinforcement,<br />
and helps to encourage academic accountability.
FACULTY AND STAFF<br />
<br />
Our experienced, fully-trained staff and faculty meet<br />
all State of Illinois requirements. Our faculty and<br />
administrative staff have over thirty years experience.<br />
This includes certified Special Education Teachers,<br />
social workers and trained crisis intervention staff<br />
with excellent de-escalation skills in dealing with<br />
students. In addition, every classroom has teacher<br />
assistants available to help with individual student<br />
needs. We also have a Licensed and Registered<br />
nurse on staff to meet the needs of our students.<br />

year through a variety of programs aimed at<br />
healing trauma, educating <strong>you</strong>th and families<br />

HOME AND FAMILY <br />

<strong><strong>you</strong>r</strong> <strong>child</strong>’s goals. In addition to regularly scheduled<br />
parent/teacher conferences, <strong>we</strong> are always available<br />
to meet with <strong>you</strong> to discuss <strong><strong>you</strong>r</strong> <strong>child</strong>’s progress.<br />
We try to assist all parents through home visitation,<br />
identification of areas of difficulty such as attendance,<br />
and finding additional community services for their<br />
<strong>child</strong>ren. We also <strong>we</strong>lcome parent involvement<br />
in all our school activities.<br />
