girlfriends
A newsletter just for you, girlfriend!
Grades 6-12
How will YOU
spend your
summer?
Floating Away?
or
Taking
Action?

Take action to
make a difference
in the environment!
At Girls Go Global, girls will discover the many ways to change the
environment in their community for the better through interactive activities,
breakout sessions and speakers.
Here are just some of the exciting things you can look forward to at
Girls Go Global:
• Special Guest Speaker: Michele Beschen, star of b. organic on
Iowa Public Television. b. organic is an educational how-to television
program that embraces all things creative while keeping a conscious
mind. The show embraces nature, simplicity and an eco-friendly
(eco-nomical and eco-logical) approach to doing it yourself. Michele
will be our morning speaker and will talk about her passions and
how they have helped her make a difference in the world.
Page 2

• Other Special Guests: We will have many other guests, including
Ted Coopwood, Coordinator of Youth and Intergenerational Programming
within the Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of
Children’s Health Protection, and the current Miss Iowa!
• Interactive Vendors and Break-out Sessions: Find something
for everyone! Highlights will include the DNR’s mobile education center
and University of Iowa presentations. Girls in grades 6-12 will
learn about what it takes to get into environmental career fields.
• SWAPS Station: Be sure to stop at this space reserved for exchanging
swaps with girls from across our council. SWAPS, the tradition
of Girl Scouts exchanging keepsakes, started long ago when
Girl Scouts first gathered to meet new friends. SWAPS should reflect
something about the giver or their group or community. Girls may
include their contact information so their new friends can write to
them. Google “Girl Scout Swaps” for ideas!
• Girl Scout Mobile Shop: A variety of merchandise will be available
for purchase. Cash, check and Cookie Program Credit accepted.
The event will be held on April 24, 2010, from 10 am – 3 pm at the
Coralville Marriott Hotel and Convention Center in Coralville, IA. Cost
is $15 per person (girl or adult) and includes lunch. Parking is $0.75
cents per hour, per car for the day. Register online at www.GSEIWI.
org.
Optional transportation is available for an additional $10 per person.
Detailed information will be sent regarding pick up and drop off
location in a confirmation letter. Transportation available to and from:
Decorah, Dubuque, Burlington, Mt. Pleasant, Quad Cities and Waterloo.
Registration for transportation is due by April 2.
Event patches can be purchased for $2 each. Patches must be
ordered by April 2 for pick up at the event registration table.
at Girl Scout Camp
Answers to the questions
You always wanted to ask
Isn’t camp just for little kids?
No way! We have many great,
girl-inspired programs for just for
girls in middle school and high
school. Girls who attended Girl
Scout Camp last summer even
helped design some of the sessions
we’re offering this summer.
You’ll meet girls from all over
Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois.
Whether this is your first
time at camp, or you’ve been to
camp for years, we hope you’ll
“Lead 2 Lead” at Girl Scout Camp
this summer!
Are we going to be treated
like Girl Scout Brownies?
Definitely not! As an older girl,
you’ll get to experience plenty of
girl-planning, which is choosing
what you want to do while you are
at camp. You’ll get to help make
decisions and be a leader that all
the younger campers will look up
to. Plus, the programs offered for
older girls are FUN! From great
trips, to outdoor adventures, advanced
arts and crafts, and advanced
horseback riding, you will
definitely be challenged and given
more privileges.
Page 4

Money is tight right now.
I want to go, but I’m not sure
I can afford it. Is there help
for camp fees?
Absolutely! We don’t want money
to be the reason that you do
not attend camp this summer.
• Did you know that the entire
camp fee does not need to be
paid in advance? Only a $25
deposit is needed to secure
your spot. The balance needs
to be paid by June 1.
• We accept
cash, check,
money order,
and
credit card.
You can pay
in installments.
• Did you
sell Girl
S c o u t
Cookies?
If yes, you earned
Cookie Program
Credit certificates.
You will be receiving
these from your
troop leader soon.
Cookie Program
Credit can be applied
to camp fees.
If you sold 500 or
more packages,
then you also earned Camp
Credit. Did you sell Girl Scout
Cookies? If yes, you earned
Cookie Program Credit certificates.
You will be receiving
these from your troop leader
soon. Cookie Program Credit
can be applied to camp fees. If
you sold 500 or more packages,
then you also earned Camp
Credit.
• Grants for Girls are available.
If you are interested in applying
for a grant, please complete
the form and submit it
with your registration form to
the appropriate Girl Scout Service
Center.
Do you have to be an active
Girl Scout to attend camp?
Absolutely not! We are affiliated
with Girl Scouts
of Eastern
Iowa &
Western Illinois;
however,
we have
many campers
who are
not active Girl
Scouts during
the school year.
All campers are
required to become
members
of Girl Scouts. Invite
your BFF to join you
this summer!
So how do I find out
more?
A camp guide was
mailed to your house
in early February and
it has details about each camp
session. Camp guides are also
available on our Web site, www.
GSEIWI.org.
Page 5

Here are some of our favorite camp sessions!
experiments and then took a
trip to Six Flags Great America
to experience the science behind
how amusement park rides work.
