the 1980s. In addition to these traditional recycling<br />

centres, increasing recycling activities are evident<br />

in China, India and Russia. As shown in the regional<br />

overview, Latin America, the Middle East, Oceania<br />

and Africa focus on primary aluminium production<br />

while recycling plays a minor role, mainly due to<br />

lower domestic scrap availability. In addition, much<br />

of the aluminium scrap in some of these countries<br />

For most countries, there is a well-established<br />

market for recycled aluminium with firmly defined<br />

distribution chains. Hence, refiners supply foundries<br />

with casting alloys and remelters supply rolling<br />

mills and extruders with wrought alloys. Alloys<br />

are supplied according to official standards and/<br />

or customer specifications. Typical products made<br />
