2014
Welcome to
the RYA Scotland
annual review
It has been an incredible and busy year which has seen
more fantastic performances from our young Scottish
sailors, the Commonwealth Flotilla of 250 boats from all
over the UK sailing up the Clyde into Glasgow city to soak
up the atmosphere of the Commonwealth Games, our team
of Regional Development Officers covering off thousands
of miles visiting clubs and centres across Scotland, Coach
Education Development getting hundreds of coaches,
instructors and officials engaged in RYA schemes and also
our team of committee members and coast watchers who
have responded to hundreds of consultations. We couldn’t
have achieved it all without the help and support of a huge
number of volunteers, partners and sponsors. We are
extremely proud of all that we have achieved over the period
and with a new CEO, James Allan, leading the team, I am
sure we have many more successes to celebrate over the
coming year.
HAS GROWN
At the core of this work are the RYA Scotland
staff and our volunteers who provide an
enormous amount of support across the
organisation. In particular I would like to
BY OVER
5%
JOIN US
acknowledge the work of my predecessor,
James Stuart, who has been the energy
behind RYA Scotland for the last four years.
We have also said a fond farewell to Nick
Scott and Angie Sword who have left us for
new pastures. Going forward we welcome
Tim Ellis who has moved into the High
Performance role from Coach Education
Development and Nikki Stewart who joins
the team replacing Tim.
I would ask you use the awards to help us
of boating and I look forward to meeting
Through the coming year our energies will
focus around growing club membership and
we will begin to review our current strategy.
Other highlights to look forward to are the
Scottish Keelboat Academy, the new Scottish
Club Trophy, the Team 15 Tiree Wave Camp
and of course the Annual Awards Dinner.
“RYA membership makes all
this possible. If you are not
recognise our volunteers. RYA Scotland
wouldn’t exist without them and they are
deserving of our sincere thanks. We also wish
to thank sportscotland for their continued
support and our extended team at the RYA in
Hamble for their continued support.
Already I have met many dedicated and
more of you on or around the water. It is
clear that RYA Scotland is an organisation
that continues to move forward. RYA
encourage you to join us.
Raising the profile
A key focus for the RYA Scotland team of staff and volunteers
is to raise the profile of RYA Scotland and the sport. We set
out to do this in a number of ways including improving our
external communications to members and prospective members,
increasing our online presence through web and social media,
building and improving our partnerships, and increasing our
media coverage. The RYA Scotland Commonwealth Flotilla was an
event that gave us a rare opportunity to work hard on all these
areas and in the end delivered some fantastic results.
Building and
improving networks
Increasing our press coverage
The Commonwealth Flotilla event attracted over
£220,000 worth of printed media coverage alone
as well as featuring on BBC Scotland, STV, BBC
World News online as well as various radio shows
including BBC 5Live. The Annual Awards Dinner
and Push the Boat Out also provided strong
platforms from which to secure media coverage
in both local and national press.
A FRESH APPROACH TO MEMBERSHIP
The RYA have revamped all the membership
materials including the Joining Point packs for
clubs and centres. The new posters, leaflets and
resources in the Joining Point pack make it even
easier to earn commission for your club or centre.
Three things you
might not know about
RYA Scotland
1
There are nine RYA members in
Scotland who have been members
of the RYA for more than 50 years!
2
UK wide there are 320,000 club
members in our sport of which only
20,000 are personal RYA members –
this is something we are working to
improve on.
There are over 2300 RYA
instructors in Scotland and over
1800 of them are commercially
endorsed.

GOING SOCIAL
Facebook, Twitter and YouTube
have all helped us to connect with
both sailors and non-sailors all
over Scotland and even further
afield. Mixing our content up with
informative posts with some fun
ones too has kept our followers
increasing steadily. A Capsize of the
USING THE WEB
RYA Scotland created a new micro
website for the Commonwealth
Flotilla which attracted a huge
number of visitors. Telling the
stories of some of the participating
boats and also hosting the boat
tracking for the event, it proved to be
a great resource for the media too.
The event increased traffic to the
standard RYA Scotland website by a
staggering 350% during July 2014!
SCOTLAND’S BOAT SHOW
RYA Scotland, Major Sponsor of Scotland’s Boat Show
RYA Scotland is a major sponsor of Scotland’s Boat Show at
Kip Marina in October. The 2014 show allowed us to showcase
a range of imagery and artwork from our work as well a
range of talks and meetings throughout the show such as the
Commodores’ Gathering. The show is a great opportunity to
help promote our sport as well as a chance to meet up with our
members face to face.

ARE
PROTECTING
YOUR
RYA Scotland is always keeping an eye
on key issues
Marine
Protected Areas
Marine Scotland has designated two
no-anchor areas, Whiting Bay and Loch
Teacuis. We have plotted anchorages in
relation to the features of conservation
interest and have worked hard to provide
evidence which we hope will have
these restrictions overturned, without
compromising conservation goals. As
always, RYA policy is ‘education not
regulation’.
LOCH LOMOND & TROSSACHS
CAMPING BYELAWS
These threaten to over-ride the right
to camp under the Scottish Outdoor
Access Code (SOAC) and could adversely
impact the traditional sport of small boat
camping by sailing dinghies and sailing
canoes. We have proposed an exemption
which still allows the authority to control
roadside camping, its primary problem,
while respecting the rights given by the
Land Reform Act and SOAC.
A voice for
recreational boating
SINCE
2010 WE’VE
RESPONDED TO
1220
MARINE LICENCE
REFERRALS
RYAS
This has proved to be a typically busy year, with a late
stimulus provided by the Smith Commission. The Cruising
and General Purposes Committee comprises 14 members
currently, covering a vast range of experience and expertise from
navigation and boating safety to legal matters, planning and
environmental issues, inland waterways & marine biology.
It is heavily supported
by our team of Coastwatchers
- volunteers
who provide the locallybased
expertise from
all round the country.
A training conference
took place in November
for updating the team
and sharing experience,
with input from staff
from Marine Scotland, Northern Lighthouse Board and the Crown
Estate’s marine coastal officers, as well as RYA Scotland.
“Our objections need
to be based on grounds
of safety and the
right of navigation,
or adverse impact on
recreational boating.”
313 referrals of marine planning applications were scrutinised
and all given responses; these mostly cover marina developments,
renewable energy installations, fish farm changes, harbour
improvements and dredging, and usually 98% of our responses
are ‘no problem’. Our objections do need to be based on grounds
of safety and the right of navigation, or adverse impact on
recreational boating.
Tidal turbine and wind turbine
applications are plentiful, but few
have actually started yet. Some of the
planned offshore wind farms are now
in progress and several demonstrator
sites for floating wind farms are
planned, but larger wave energy
projects have failed recently and
won’t be implemented.
Members of The Cruising and General
Purposes Committee represent RYA
Scotland on a range of Scottish and
UK Committees and bodies where
they can ensure that the voice of
recreational boating is heard.
These include:
• The Crown Estate
• Northern Lighthouse Board
• Maritime and Coastguard Agency
• Marine Scotland
• Cross-Party Group on Recreational
Boating and Marine Tourism at
Holyrood
• Scottish Canals
• A range of RYA committees
Other consultations with national
and regional bodies include:
• Marine Scotland
• SNH and Marine Scotland on the
projected Marine Protected Areas
• Loch Lomond and the Trossachs
National Park, on proposed
camping byelaws, and on the
maintenance of navigation marks

Disability Sailing
Race 2 the Games
RYA Scotland supported the
Commonwealth Games Legacy 2014
event, Race 2 The Games. This took
place on the River Clyde on 2 July
2014 when 17 boats with children and
adults with additional support needs
raced 33km from Greenock to Glasgow
creating a spectacular flotilla of
colourful access dinghies.
Those sailors inspired others in their
schools and community groups to try
sailing resulting in a 50% increase in
participation amongst the disabled
community at Clyde Muirshiel
Regional Park’s Castle Semple
Centre, Lochwinnoch.
Legacy 2014 funding gave nearly 600
people in 2014 the opportunity to
sail at Castle Semple – a RYA Centre
of Excellence for accessible sailing
since 2012. The resulting increase in
participation in one year leaves the
Centre operating at near capacity
in 2015 given its current fleet of
accessible sailing dinghies.

BUSA Team Racing Championship Finals, 60th Anniversary edition
Commodores’ Cup
They say that good things come to
those who wait. Well, it has been
a 17 year wait to see the BUCS /
BUSA Team Racing Championship Finals
return to Scotland, but 2014 was the year.
The 60th Anniversary edition, hosted by
University of Strathclyde Sailing Club with
sponsorship from North Lanarkshire Council
and Summer Sail Week, ran from 6th - 8th
April at Strathclyde Country Park. The
three days of intense competition brought
to a close a Championship which had been
contested by 500 sailors, representing 36
universities. 28 teams, made up of 168
sailors, travelled to Scotland and the venue
of the 2014 Commonwealth Games
Triathlon to contest the finals, having
qualified through regional qualifiers
and the playoff event. Cambridge
Blue took the finals race, and the
Championship! Although it was so
close that not even the competitors
knew the result until the finish boat
told them who had just put a nose
over the line first!
In the summer of 2014 three Scottish
yacht owners from the Clyde teamed
up and were nominated to become the
Scottish Commodores Cup Team. The
team made up of Eala of Rhu, Zephyr and
Aurora combined to represent Scotland
for the first time since 2006 and had a
great week finishing in 6th position. More
importantly everyone involved is ready to
improve on that result in 2016.

YA Scotland helps to develop club and training centre by
supporting people through their Senior Instructor qualification
and their Race Coach Level 2 qualification.
We introduced programmes such as Pre Course Support for SI and
RCL2 courses, Instructor/Coach Development Days, and a revamped
Fork Dinner programme.
Overall workshops have
been very well received. 310
instructors and coaches
attended RYA Scotland
workshops. The most popular
of these workshops was without
doubt the 4 weather workshops
ran with Simon Rowell at Castle
Simon made the sessions fun
We have also worked with the coaches within the performance side of
our sport with the Coach Development Programme. This is a structure
of support to help new coaches into race coaching and to support
RYA Scotland Class Academies. Two coaches were selected for this
programme Sophie Taylor who is working with the Optimist Class
and Alex Ekstrom who is working with the Lasers. Both have received

INSTRUCTORS
2015 started with a bang with the RYAS Principal, YMI and Instructor
Conference at Hampden Park Stadium. With over 80 people attending
a day of workshops from ‘Duke of Edinburgh’ to ‘Working with
Volunteers’ the day was designed to give people a few tips to take
away with them and apply to their own club, training centre or their
own coaching/instructing practice.
The great start to 2015 continued on the 21/22 March at Cumbrae with
a Powerboat Trainer and Coach Assessor weekend. Aimed at people
interested in becoming an assessor or a trainer, the weekend included
improving teaching skills, theory as well as preparing the candidates
for the course with personal development plans.
The year finished with a flourish as the Windsurf Instructors had
a weekend preparing them for the season ahead, improving personal
skills as well as their teaching skills. This coincides with a kick off to
the Team 15 season with RDO Robin Nicol and T15 Coordinator Chris
Bradby providing workshops for the instructors.
A Year For Medals
After a record breaking year in 2013, Scotland’s young sailing
impress.
Scotland’s young sailing talent based themselves at sportscotland
National Centre Cumbrae for training camps working with their team
of expert coaches to develop their skills and put in the hard yards that
would earn them great results, podium places and medals all through
the season.
july 2014
Glasgow was the focus of the sporting world in
2014 as it hosted the Commonwealth Games. As well
as the sporting programme of events that form the
Commonwealth Games, the city came alive for the summer
to showcase the very best of what the city and Scotland has
to offer. The RYA Scotland Commonwealth Flotilla
saw over 250 boats sail up the river Clyde into the
Glasgow City Centre as part of the Commonwealth Games
celebrations. Thousands of people gathered all along the
banks of the Clyde to watch the spectacle – banners hung
from bridges and balconies, flags fluttered and music
played – all giving the flotilla of boats from all over the UK
the warmest welcome they could ever imagine. HRH Prince
Andrew also dropped in to visit the flotilla and enjoyed a
walk along the pontoons in Glasgow to chat to the sailors
about their experience.
