ART NOUVEAU DOCUMENTS
Heinrich Pudor
Modern Applied Art 1902–1908
Press release
A unique wealth of Art Nouveau objects -
the Documents of Modern Decorative Art
In 1902, the magazine Documents of Modern Decorative Art was presented
for the first time. It was published until 1908, the contents of which were
distributed over five series, sumptuously produced without fail and with numerous
outstanding illustrations. The 'documents' remained widely unknown
due to its small number of subscribers. It nevertheless deals with a unique
wealth of Art Nouveau objects and presents not only the reputable designers
and manufacturers, some of whom have never been discussed before now,
but also the unknown creative sides of renowned artists.
The editor and author was Heinrich Pudor (1865–1943), who today is merely
remembered as a national and ‘völkisch’ publicist. However, his Documents
of Modern Decorative Art are characterised through ideological neutrality,
and his extensive publishing and business activities around the turn of the
century ranged from nudism, vegetarianism and nutritional physiology
through social and cultural policy and sexual science to the history of music
as well as the theory of language history and antiquity.
The new revised edition of the Documents of Modern Decorative Art is now
here. The introduction (illustrated in colour) by the Art Nouveau and ceramic
expert Horst Makus enables the reader to comprehend the special position of
the work and its author within its historical context. Around 1,000 illustrations
of over 1,500 individual German and international Art Nouveau pieces
– furniture, metal, glass, ceramics, jewellery as well as textile art – are compiled
in a new reprinted section. The index of around 500 entries, also extended
with artists' biographies and company histories by Horst Makus, allows
quick and easy access: now it's possible to search, find and identify!
An indispensable standard reference work, particularly for all those interested
in Art Nouveau, is once again available in the shape of this revised
edition of Documents of Modern Decorative Art. The wide selection of illustrations
and texts, which cover never-discussed-before designers and
manufacturers, and the unknown creative sides of well-known artists alike,
make this publication an essential source of reference for the applied arts
from Art Nouveau and Jugendstil.
