10 welcome to the Ilkley ilkley Literature literature Festival festival 2010 full to the brim with inspiring events! Meet novelists Margaret Drabble, Roddy Doyle, Michèle Roberts, Louis de Bernières, Helen Dunmore, Aminatta Forna and Joseph O’Connor. Enjoy Alexei Sayle and John O’Farrell. Change your mind about maths with Marcus du Sautoy, assess the Labour government with Polly Toynbee. Or you can delve into South Asian Literature with Leeds and Leeds Metropolitan Universities and revel in Ilkley Liming with John Agard and Daljit Nagra. We’ll be celebrating archaeologist Jacquetta Hawkes’ centenary and launching our Stanza Stones project with events exploring Words, Land and Landscape, from Time Team’s Francis Pryor to Will Self. All this, plus lots for the family to do and over 30 free events for all ages! Rachel Feldberg, Festival Director The Festival is delighted to announce the launch of our exciting Stanza Stones project in collaboration with Simon Armitage. The project, which will run until June 2012, will be triggered by a new poem from Simon inspired by the wild landscape of the Pennine Watershed, which will act as a creative springboard for groups of young writers, dancers and film makers. It is hoped that the poem, inscribed on a series of Stanza Stones, will then form a permanent trail across the Watershed. Stanza Stones is part of the imove programme which celebrates and challenges the relationship between people and their moving bodies through a series of exciting and innovative arts project across Yorkshire. Inspired by London 2012, imove is funded by Legacy Trust UK, Yorkshire Forward and Arts Council England. Find us at www.imoveand.com 2010 Festival Poet in Residence Antony Dunn will be offering readings, workshops, an intergenerational project with schools and older people and the chance to get involved in the Ilkley Poetry Map. Apprentice Poet in Residence Andrew McMillan will be introducing the new generation of outspoken young poets, on the streets and in performance. Events for children and young people can be found on pages 40-43. No induction loop system at St Margaret’s Church Hall or Craiglands Hotel. ilkley literature festival 10 with Skipton Building Society Refreshments • The Bar will be open before, after (and where appropriate during) evening events at Ilkley Playhouse and the Kings Hall. Soft drinks, tea and coffee available. • The Festival Café serving tea, coffee and delicious cakes, is open at Ilkley Playhouse during Festival evenings and weekends. Event and Access Information • All venues are accessible with accessible toilets except the first floor of the Manor House Museum and Ilkley Moor Vaults upstairs. • St Margaret’s Hall is an uphill walk from the station. Allow 15–20 minutes. • Selected events are BSL interpreted. Working dogs welcome. Thursday 23rd September 7pm The Wheatley Arms Festival Curtain Raiser: Crime and Curry Supper with Sophie Hannah Bestselling crime fiction writer and poet Sophie Hannah has received international critical acclaim and her novels have been translated into more than 15 languages. Following a delicious two-course supper, join her as she reveals the secrets of her latest psychological crime novel, A Room Swept White. An evening of suspense and intrigue … £15 includes two-course supper and coffee. 7pm for 7.30pm. In conjunction with The Wheatley Arms 2. 28th September – 31st October Manor House Museum 2010 Festival Exhibition Celebrating Jacquetta Hawkes Archaeologist, poet, journalist and film-maker: Jacquetta Hawkes was passionate about the past, nature and the arts. 2010 is her centenary year. This exhibition uses treasures from her archive at the University of Bradford to tell her fascinating story, in particular her connections with artists such as Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore, and her second husband, Bradford-born novelist and playwright J.B. In association with the University of Bradford 3. 2nd October–14th November Manor House Museum 2010 Festival Exhibition Faces of Poetry: National Portrait Gallery A National Portrait Gallery exhibition featuring some of the most important poets of the late twentieth century. Madeleine Waller’s images of Jo Shapcott and Lemn Sissay; iconic portraits of James Fenton and Thom Gunn by Dudley Reed and Arthur Tress; Norman McBeath’s black and white studies of Don Paterson, Douglas Dunn and Tom Paulin; and images of Seamus Heaney and Blake Morrison by Britain’s best-known literary photographer, Mark Gerson. Friday 1st October 7.30pm Kings Hall Festival Opening: John Simpson John Simpson is one of the world’s most experienced and authoritative journalists. BBC World Affairs editor and a former presenter of the Nine O’Clock News, he’s witnessed 30 years of upheaval, reporting from the Gulf, Afghanistan, Iraq and Tiananmen Square.
