Sunday 10th October 7.30pm St Margaret’s Hall The Long Road Home: Matthew Kelly and Ben Shephard Conversations about Empires Wars don’t stutter out – they take generations to fix. After the Second World War, an estimated eight million ‘displaced persons’, including Southampton University history lecturer Matthew Kelly’s great grandmother and her two daughters, were deported to the East after Germany’s partitioning of Poland. Kelly discusses the extraordinary ordeal that took them from Siberia to Pakistan with Ben Shephard, author of The Long Road Home, a compelling study of the post-war refugee crisis and its aftermath. Shephard, producer of The World at War, and numerous historical and scientific documentaries for the BBC/ Channel Four is author of A War of Nerves: Soldiers and Psychiatrists. £5/3 111. Mary Hoffman is the acclaimed author of the Stravaganza series of fantasy novels for young adults set in a parallel dimension 16th century Italy, including City of Masks, set in a fictionalised and subtly different Venice. Novelist, writer and anthologist Michelle Lovric saw Venice for the first time at 18; from that moment her ambition was to write about the city, something she has done many times, most recently in her diabolically gorgeous novel of love, murder and obsession, The Book of Human Skin. £5/3 112. Monday 11th October 7.30pm Craiglands Matthew Parris and Andrew Bryson: Parting Shots Times columnist, writer and TV presenter Matthew Parris and radio journalist Andrew Bryson join forces to talk about Parting Shots, their unbuttoned, indiscreet and very funny collection of valedictory despatches from ambassadors leaving foreign postings, which began as a popular BBC Radio 4 series. Matthew Parris is a former Conservative MP, Andrew Bryson a radio journalist working in the BBC’s Business and Economics Unit. £9/7 117.
