“ I listen to the radio with six fellow mechanics ... my wife is also a Christian, and we have three children. I taught them the Bible. They also listen to the “Voice of New Life” (VNL) every night with us and they understand that we listen to the radio secretly, so they can’t tell anyone about it. For about ten years my family members and my six colleagues have been listening to the broadcast. ” Another long-time listener to VNL, the Somali language Christian radio programme, writes: “I’m 38, and for 20 years I did not miss your broadcast for even a single night. The first time was like this: As I entered our neighbour’s house, I heard the voices of the broadcast … I stood for a while outside the door and listened ... then I entered his room and asked him, ‘What are you listening to?’ He was so frightened and asked me not to tell anyone. When I was leaving, they asked me to leave the radio for them. I set the frequency to VNL… Yesterday the man responsible for our camels arrived to give me a report. He told me that those camel herders like the radio so much that they listen every night. They are illiterate and have no idea about city life, only about their camels. “Nevertheless they are drinking from the spring of VNL. Pray for them, and ask the Lord to protect me from evil doers who threaten me because I witness and invite people to listen to VNL. I am not afraid of death because Christ is my life and death would be a benefit for me. Still I believe that I can share the Gospel with many people; therefore, I need your prayers”. A regular radio listener says,“VNL is like a heavenly pipeline of water designed by God for Somalis, so that they may drink, through it, the grace of his Holy Spirit…I pray for you always, and I thank God for he has raised those heroes of VNL to establish the Somali church.“ Somali listeners with the internet can download VNL radio programmes from the New Life website (www.noloshacusub.net) along with other valuable resources such as the Bible, correspondence courses, and music. Since being launched in 2007 there have been over 268,795 visits to this website from over 201,805 individuals in 6,429 cities in 182 countries. Social media such as YouTube and Facebook are also bringing the Gospel to Somalis .
