Instructions:<br />

1. Title this work “<strong>Subject</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Predicate</strong>.”<br />

2. Copy the paragraph below into your grammar book.<br />

3. Answer the questions below in your grammar book.<br />

Information:<br />

The subject of a sentence tells who or what the sentence is about.<br />

The predicate of a sentence tells what the subject does or is.<br />

Ex. The woman with the green hat ate lunch.<br />

The subject of the sentence is the woman with the green hat because that is who the sentence is<br />

about.<br />

The predicate of the sentence is ate lunch because that is what the subject is doing.<br />

Questions:<br />

1. Draw a red line under the subject of each sentence <strong>and</strong> a blue line under the predicate of each<br />

sentence. Circle all of the linking verbs <strong>and</strong> put a box around the action verbs.<br />

Example: The small squirrel scampered across the yard.<br />

a. Three pelicans flew over the beach.<br />

b. The children built a s<strong>and</strong>castle.<br />

c. Ben played chess with Alex.<br />

d. Everyone in the stadium watched the game.<br />

e. The microwave beeped.<br />

f. Malcolm is a very thoughtful person.<br />

g. The seagull’s feathers were white.<br />

h. The moon shines down on the water.<br />

i. The bicycle’s back tire needed air.<br />

j. Bart, Mike, <strong>and</strong> Jim went bowling.<br />

k. Orange is my favourite color.<br />

l. The giant oak tree is over a hundred years old.
