Field Description: Small tree with flaky bark. Leaves to 4.5 inches long,<br />

simple, alternate, evergreen, aromatic, widest near the middle with long<br />

pointed tips. Flowers tiny, lacking petals, with 3 fertile stamens with 2-<br />

celled anthers; in long-stalked clusters. Fruit a dark blue berry enclosed<br />

at the base by a red cup with 2 rims.<br />

Similar Species: Lancewood (Ocotea coriacea, synonym: Nectandra<br />

coriacea) has reddish-brown, warty bark; flowers with 9 stamens; and fruits<br />

in a shallow, woody, single-rimmed cup.<br />

Related Rare Species: None in south FL.<br />

Gulf licaria<br />

<strong>Licaria</strong> <strong>triandra</strong><br />

Habitat: Rockland hammocks.<br />

Best Survey Season: Flowers in June, fruits are distinctive all year.<br />

Range-wide Distribution: FL and West Indies.<br />

Conservation Status: Most populations were destroyed by development;<br />

now found in only one park in Dade County.<br />

Protection & Management: Purchase and protect remaining fragments of<br />

rockland hammock. Control exotic pest plants.<br />
