Graduates’ Address
Farah Al Braiki
Al Mawakeb - Al Garhoud
As children, most daughters enjoyed pet names such as “darling”, and “sweetheart” from their
mothers. My mother, on the other hand, nicknamed me her “secret”. As a child, I found this
odd, confusing, and difficult to fathom. But my wonderful mother poetically explained, “You are
a secret; fragile, protected, unexpected, and so immensely profound. While the world is trying to
hold you back, you fight to emerge. And you will inevitably always emerge. And when you do,
everyone will pause and pay close attention. And just like a secret, the moment you gush forth,
you will shake grounds and change lives.”
I now look around and I’m no longer bewildered. We are our parents’ well kept secrets, pushing
through the surface to grow into revelation and enlightenment. Today is the day we are driven to
walk, when we have been crawling for years. Today is the day we belong to the world when, for
years, we have belonged to our parents, to our teachers, to our schools, to our homes. We may
seem unprepared and far too young to tackle responsibilities, but do not be fooled. You are looking at a bouquet of young men
and women eager to flourish into the possibility of greatness.
Here, now, us. This is our defining moment. This is our message to the world. Honored guests, mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters,
teachers and counselors, I thank you on behalf of all of us for contributing to the crafting of the individuals you see before you.
Ladies and gentlemen, standing before you are YOUR best kept secrets. The Class of 2011 has risen!
