REGULATION ANSI Z133.1-2006 requires that all climbing rope be made 

from synthetic fibers and have a minimum breaking strength of 5,400 pounds 

(24.02 kN) when new. At a load of 540 pounds (2.402 kN), the maximum working 

elongation shall not exceed 7%.

Standards for Rope Strength and Usage 

New Rope Tensile Strengths: New Rope tensile strengths are based on tests of new and unused rope of standard construction in accordance 

with manufacturer’s Standard Test Methods. It can be expected that strengths will decrease as soon as a rope is put into use. Because of 

the wide range of rope use, changes in rope conditions, exposure to many factors affecting rope behavior, and the possibility of risk to life 

and property, it is impossible to cover all aspects of rope applications or to make blanket recommendations as to working loads. 

Working Loads: Working loads are the loads that a rope is subject to in everyday activity. They are normally expressed as a percentage of 

new rope strength and should not exceed 10% unless specified by the manufacturer. A point to remember is that a rope may be severely 

overloaded or shock loaded without breaking. However, damage and strength loss may have occurred without any visible indication. The 

next time the rope is used under normal working loads, the acquired weakness may cause it to break.

Throwline BIGshot 

The BIGshot has been redesigned and is more accurate and 25% lighter than before! Thanks to computeraided 

design (CAD), Jameson was able to reduce excess bulk and weight from the head assembly while 

keeping the same wide-fork dimension that has made this such a popular throwline accessory. While they 

were at it, Jameson redesigned the launch pad to reduce in-air projectile rotation by 50%, greatly improving 

accuracy (also available as a sling replacement for older models). Jameson improved the leading and most

Weaver Throw Weights 

Weaver’s new Cordura ® Throw Weights are their strongest yet. Cordura ® is a highperformance 

fabric resistant to abrasions, tears, and scuffs and is twice as durable 

as standard nylon. In addition to the Cordura ® exterior, Weaver has coated the #8 

shot to protect it from moisture and wrapped it in a balloon to keep the shot encapsulated 

and compacted for better trajectories. The new D-ring at the top of the bag 

is nickel-plated die-cast zinc to prevent rusting. Available in traditional single color

Buckingham’s Friction Saver is the only product of its kind to 

have a patent and the ArborMaster ® name. This product has 

been redesigned to make installation and retrieval from the 

ground easier. In addition, the large diameter cross-section 

Friction Saver minimizes friction by limiting the sharp bend in

Mini Cam-loaded Rope Clamps/Ascenders 

Cam-loaded rope clamps are mainly used in hauling systems and to build adjustable lanyards. Cam-loaded clamps apply the load 

directly to the cam so that they will engage even if the rope is muddy, wet or icy. We carry them in a number of sizes and materials

Gibbs Ascenders

The Grillon (pronounced gree-yawn) is the most advanced positioning lanyard that we 

have. Like traditional rope clamps and ascenders, this device allows the climber to 

take up slack quickly and easily with one hand. The breakthrough is that it allows the

Ascenders are one way rope clamps. We offer two types of ascenders: frame-loaded rope clamps and cam-loaded rope 

clamps. Frame-loaded clamps are most commonly used for climbing while cam-loaded clamps are used for light-duty rigging and

Descenders are designed to regulate friction and control descent on a fixed rope. When used as a personal belay device, 

they can control the speed of descent. We offer two types of descenders: standard and self-braking. Standard descenders (Straight 

8 and Rescue 8) require constant friction to regulate speed. Self-braking descenders (Grigri) provide breaking force when the 

handle is not actuated. 

The Figure 8 is the simplest descender on the market. With no moving parts, it is easy-to-nstall, use and inspect for wear. Their design 

allows for a fast yet controlled descent. Figure 8's may also be used as a belay device when a more appropriate tool is not available. 

The Rescue 8 has ears for extra friction on heavier loads and is available in both steel and aluminum (the Straight 8 is available 

in aluminum only). Use the aluminum 8's for personal descent and the steel 8's in conjunction with a sling for light-duty rigging.

The Whoopie Sling is an adjustable lifting sling with a permanent 

eye at one end and an adjustable eye at the other that allows it 

to easily adapt to a variety of tasks and loads. The adjustment 

allows snug lifting control and minimizes the number of fixed 

length slings required. The sling is a braided non-torquing polyester 

rope with Samthane coating. This coating provides 

increased sling durability. Each sling has a permanent rating tag

These blocks were designed by CMI specifically for use in false 

crotch systems to help save wear and tear on bull ropes. The

Climbing Knots 

Tautline Hitch and Blake’s Hitch 

These are used as the “climbers knot” to tie in. They must be kept 

tight to be effective. Extreme care must be taken to minimize heat 

build up in these hitches 

caused by fast descents. It 

is likely that a “bail out” 

descent will create sufficient 

heat to melt completely 

through the climbing 

line. 

Prusik Loop 

Used to “self-belay” when using the “footlock”, 

it allows the climber to rest during 

the ascent. It must be tight to be effective 

and must never be used to descend a tree 

because it has little holding power in the 

direction it is pushed. 

Mounter Hitch 

The Mounter Hitch is used with a carabiner to 

control a descent and is considered more effective 

than a Figure “8” descender. It is easy to tie 

and is known as a running knot. It should not be 

used to rappel because heat build up can damage 

the rope. 

Double Fisherman’s Knot 

Normally used to tie two ropes of equal size together. 

Most commonly used by arborist to create a Prusik Loop. 

Bowline 

The Bowline will not slip or jam and is easily 

untied. It is generally used to attach the climbing 

line to saddle D-rings and to attach snaps 

or hooks to ropes. The Bowline creates about 

40% rope strength reduction. 

Clove Hitch with Half Hitch 

The Clove Hitch is easy to tie and untie. 

It is often used to send equipment to 

climbers in a tree or in combination with 

a half hitch to tie limbs. The Clove Hitch 

creates approximately 40% rope strength 

reduction. 

Timber Hitch 

The Timber Hitch is sometimes used to attach a 

false crotch to a tree or to lower or hoist limbs. It 

should be considered somewhat unreliable 

because it has a tendency to slip or come 

undone. The Timber Hitch creates approximately 

50% rope strength reduction. 

The Figure ”8“ 

Figure “8” is tied in the ends of lines to stop them 

from running out through blocks or other knots. It is 

easily untied even when cinched down tight and 

should be tied at least four inches from the bitter end 

so it has room to slip.
