Hawks in
volleyball

Eat. Sleep. Dream. Volleyball.
Addy Couch, Mani John,
and Sarah Burns are the only
three seniors on the BUHS
varsity volleyball, and their
lives this fall revolve around
these four actions.
“Volleyball is my passion,”
said Couch, who is beginning
her third year on the varsity
team. “It was kind of scary
(then) because I was a sophomore
with all seniors and I
was starter.”
Couch hopes her experience
on the top squad at BUHS
pays off this year and is looking
forward to leading the
team and rallying the team as
she saw past leaders do on the
court.
“(Sophomore year), Lauren
Barnes was here and she was,
and still is, my idol,” Couch
said. “I want to be like her,
play like her, and hit like her.
I just remember one time she
hit the ball so hard it bounced
off the opponents arm and
someone in the crowd yelled
‘put a safety on that gun.’ ”
Helping Couch lead the
Hawks will be Burns, who has
been playing volleyball since
she was 13.
“I love to dig,” Burns said.
“Ever since I started playing
its kind of been my passion.
I love pumping up every one
and just being energized it
makes the game way more
fun.”
The third senior is Anna
John, better known as Mani,
who brings five years of
experience to the lineup.
“I didn’t get to play
sophomore year because I
transferred from Estella if you
transfer from a sister school
you have to wait a year to
play,” John said. As for this
year’s goal, it’s simple
“We almost made it to (state
playoffs) last year,” John said.
“We were maybe one game
off and I think that was a big
accomplishment.”
This year, the Hawk seniors
are hoping for that extra game
and more.

s ost students begin
their senior year of
high school still
deciding where they
want to go for college next
year. But BUHS senior DeAndre
Miller made his choice
before classes started this fall.
Miller, the 2011 region
defensive player of the year,
had scholarship offers to play
football at several Division
I schools, including Arizona
State and Boise State, but
chose to verbally commit to
play football at the University
of Arizona next fall for head
coach Rich Rodriguez and the
Wildcats.
“There were a variety of
thoughts and emotions going
through my mind and body all
at once, when the offers started
flowing in,” Miller said. “I
mean I have a chance to play
(NCAA Division I) ball and experience
something amazing.
That definitely brought out the
excitement in me.
“But at the same time it
brought a burden on me,
because now I have to live up
to the hype, it should be easy
though because like Wiz Kalifa
said, ‘work hard, play hard.’”
Miller is the first Buckeye
player to get a scholarship to a
Division I school. Head coach
Bobby Barnes hopes the success
rubs off on other players
not just in looks from scouts,
but in teamwork and habits.
“Of course I’m real proud of
DeAndre because he represents
our football program
and he’s very deserving of
that offer because of his work
ethic both on the classroom
and out on the field,” Barnes
said. “That’s something has
been missing here in Buckeye,
is people keeping up with their
grades. We’ve had a lot of great
athletes at Buckeye but their
grades have not been such that
they could even be eligible for
an offer from a DI school. That
just proves that DeAndre is not
only a great athlete but also a
great student.”
The Hawks also understand
that the bar has been raised
this season. Miller’s teammates
say that he is a natural
leader and respected.
“The great thing about De-
Andre is that he doesn’t belittle
anybody, that’s for sure,” said
senior Brandon Grabowski.
“Just because they’re younger
or anything like that ... he
understands we were all there
at one point so he understands
where they’re coming from.
And it’s pretty awesome the
fact that he got a scholarship to
play at UofA and I’m going to
be there with him.”
Miller hopes the spotlight
can help both himself and others
as the season progresses.
“Yes, I try to be a role model
on and off the field for everyone,”
he said. “But I look up
to (my teammates) just as they
do to me, so we feed off each
others’ characteristics, which
is why many more on my
team will go DI, not just me.”
With the season at its
beginning, Miller is focused
on the present. Last year’s
Hawks finished 9-3 and lost to
eventual state champion Blue
Ridge in the quarterfinals. One
reason Miller commited early
was to put that process in the
past and focus on leading
Buckeye this season.
“(The choice was) by far
the hardest part of the whole
process, because you will have
to spent the next 4 to 6 years
at that college, so you have to
get into depth and weigh your
pros and cons, hoping that
you chose the right place,”
Miller said. “Of course you
have certain people trying
to persuade you to go where
they want you to go, but in the
end it’s whatever makes me
feel at home.”

But for now, Tucson can
wait. Miller wants to make
his last year at BUHS count
and plans to put in work
on the field as well as in the
classroom so that he’s ready to
hit the ground running when
he heads to the University of
Arizona next fall.
“I still have touching up I
have to go for football, but by
the end of this year I should
be in pretty good shape,”
Miller said. “Same goes for the
education aspect. I still have
classes I have to take before I
can honestly say I’m prepared.
“And as for the youngsters
coming up, they can reach
their goal like I did, with hard
work and dedication there’s
no reason why you shouldn’t
be able to reach your dreams.”
