Ransom 2012 – Unlocking literacy
Welcome to Ransom’s 2012 catalogue. This year’s bumper catalogue has doubled in size, with 32 pages of
titles designed to help you develop your pupils’ reading skills. Ransom is well known for our great books for
reluctant and struggling readers; this new catalogue includes a variety of new titles for different reading
levels and ages.
At Ransom we always try to listen to what you tell us you need, so in 2012 we start to publish for more able
readers. We have started small with just three titles, which I hope you will agree provide something new to
meet the needs of children who need stimulating and stretching reads that are age-appropriate. We also
know that you find our teacher’s books a great source of ideas and resources, so we have added in new titles
in the Unlocking series, plus a new series of photocopiable literacy resources – Results in English.
As always, we value your feedback. The very many positive comments we get on how much our books are
liked and how they work is a great encouragement, but we also welcome feedback on what we get wrong
and – of course – what else you would like. You can email me direct at jenny@ransom.co.uk.
Thunderbolts
Interest age 7 – 14 years | Reading age 5 – 7 years
David and Helen Orme
Forthcoming!
A series of levelled reading books covering popular non-fiction topics, with particular appeal to
older readers. The 24 full-colour titles offer progression over four levels. As with the Trailblazers
series, these books combine a non-fiction section with a fiction story on the same topic.
The six lowest level books, in Set One, have no words in them, allowing reluctant and struggling
readers with the greatest difficulties to engage with narratives. The Set One books are also valuable
as starting points for discussion and creative work.
Set Two introduces a very limited number of words on each page, with Sets Three and Four offering a further degree of
progression. In all cases the texts focus on high frequency vocabulary, with all words being phonically decodable wherever
possible.
The highest level Thunderbolts books have a reading level that is below that of Ransom’s popular Trailblazers series.
Hairy Mole
Interest age 7 – 10 years | Reading age 7 – 8 years
Chris Owen
Four very funny stories for newly independent readers, all featuring Hairy Mole and his pirate
crew: Guff, Belch, Pickle, the twins Crevice and Pit – and of course Mr Bogey, with his extrasqueaky
voice and stubble you could grate cheese on. (Not to mention his cricket bat for a
PIG
Interest age 7 – 12 years | Reading age 8 – 9 years
Forthcoming!
Barbara Catchpole
Meet Peter Ian Green – P.I.G for short. All his friends and family call him Pig. Even the teachers.
Pig is 12 and is small for his age. He has sticky-out ears and bright red hair which is also sticky up.
He attends Coalpits Road High School (or ‘The Pits’ as it is known locally) and lives with his mum.
Pig is small for his age, but says his mum is huge for hers. She is a single mum but Pig says she looks more
like a double mum or even a treble mum.
PIG and the Talking Poo
Pig has a huge brown plastic dog poo.
(‘Not one of those long ones like a cigar
that go dry. This one’s a curly brown,
wet-looking poo, with a little black
plastic fly on it.’) Pig thinks the poo talks
to him (he doesn’t think that really –
he’s not bonkers or anything). But he
does miss his poo lots when he loses it –
mainly because it reminds him of his dad.
PIG plays Cupid
9781841675206
PIG takes advantage of a free offer to
set his mum up on the Kissy Kissy Online
Dating Site (‘Meet your hero – hundreds
of hunky men free for the online single
lady.’) When PIG invites two of them to
meet his mum (at the same time) things
go from worse to even worse than that.
Do people on online dating sites always
tell lies?
9781841675213
PIG gets the Black Death
(nearly)
PIG hates needles, so he uses his skills to
avoid the school vaccinations. But then
comes a history lesson on the Black Death.
Terrified, he tries to rejoin the queue –
only to find it’s not that easy. Surely it’s
only a matter of time before he becomes
another victim of the plague.
9781841675220
PIG and the Fancy Pants
PIG is late for school and he can’t find
his pants – so he puts on his sister’s
sparkly pink Drama Diva panties. Things
get difficult when he has to do PE and is
found in the teachers’ toilets in his sister’s
panties. All ends well and PIG is even
offered a surfing holiday as a result.
PIG and the Long Fart
9781841675237
Pig falls in love with a girl in his class.
To impress her he agrees to make a
speech at school assembly, in front of
the Mayor and all the parents. Unfortunately
nerves have a very upsetting
effect on Pig’s stomach, and when all
his concentration is spent on holding in
a fart, his speech inevitably suffers.
PIG Saves the Day
9781841675244
PIG wants to be in the school football
team, but there is one problem: he is
rubbish at football. When the team
goalie is injured (looking at the other
school’s cheerleaders whilst walking),
PIG ends up in goal. Can he save the
day?
Spook Squad
Interest age 7 – 12 years | Reading age 8 years
Roger Hurn
The Spook Squad are Roxy, Leena, Nita, Emma and (whether they want him or not)
Rattle the poltergeist. The four girls are as bright and sparky as a fire in a fireworks
factory. And they have a job to do: to protect humans from ghouls, ghosts,
long-legged beasties and things that go bump in the night.
So, on dark and stormy nights, when the vampires are being a pain in the neck
and hairy horrors are on the prowl, the Spook Squad goes into action.
Interest age teens and young adults | Reading age 12 + years
Individual titles
available at £7.99
A collection of 17 compelling shorter reads, ideal for older teens and young adults who are generally turned off books. The
stories are fast-paced, gripping, and feature hard-hitting plots about the tougher side of life, with which many readers will
associate. The series features new, well known and award winning authors from South Africa, USA, Australia and Britain. The
stories are shorter than the average novel, with a word count between 25,000 and 35 000, and the books have a larger font,
making them more accessible for less keen readers.
• For young adults who find conventional fiction irrelevant to them or too hard to read.
• An honest and hard-hitting approach to subject matter that will be familiar to many teens.
Adult Literacy
Interest age young adult/adult | Reading age 5 – 8 years
Forthcoming!
Hearsay is a new set of books based on synthetic phonics and developed specifically
to support adult literacy. All reading books in the series are designed to appeal to
adult readers, with a wide range of appropriate topics, both fact and fiction, ranging
from romance to war and adventure. In all cases the books are accessible and
age-appropriate, and are structured to ensure success and build confidence.
Each reading book is accompanied by an optional workbook, containing appropriate
phonics-based/comprehension activities to support the reading.
How the series is structured
The Hearsay synthetic phonics resources are structured into five stages. Each Hearsay stage
corresponds closely with the stages offered by synthetic phonics programmes. However the five
stages in Hearsay are carefully tailored to suit the specific learning requirements of adults.
The Hearsay Stage One books are suitable for a person reading at Entry Level 2 and moving
towards Entry Level 3 (as defined in the UK Adult Literacy Core Curriculum). These books equate
broadly to Phase 2 of the Letters and Sounds programme. The Hearsay Stage Two books are
appropriate for learners at Entry Level 3 of the UK Adult Literacy Core Curriculum and equate broadly
to Phase 3 of Letters and Sounds.
Books at the two lowest levels (Stages One and Two) are available now. Books at the higher Stages
Three, Four and Five will be available in due course.
Cold Fusion
Interest age 9 – 12 | Reading age 12 + years
Forthcoming!
NEW!
FOR GIFTED
READERS
This new series caters for the interests of the more gifted reader – children who find that the run-of-the-mill books available
for their age group are just not stimulating enough.
Each of the books in the Cold Fusion series tackles a compelling topic in a way that is more demanding than the average
book for 8 to 12 year-olds. The series includes both fiction and non-fiction, but in all cases the reader will be stretched with
stimulating ideas. No specialist knowledge is assumed – all that readers need is an open, curious mind and a willingness to be
challenged.
The books in this series are not necessarily very long reads; more able readers do not always want to read ‘doorstops’. Rather
it is the content of these books and the vocabulary used that is used that is more demanding.
How Do We Know Anything?
David Orme and Stephen Rickard 9781781271018 £6.99
Sometimes the most innocent questions are the hardest to answer. Is the Earth really round?
Did Christopher Columbus really discover America? Does three plus eight make eleven? How do
you know? How do you know anything?
This is a light-hearted, stimulating and provocative journey through the jungles of fact and
fiction, knowledge and wisdom, and thinking for yourself.
Are you the victim of other people’s thinking? How can you be sure?
NON-FICTION
FICTION
Never Odd or Even
John Townsend 9781781271025 £6.99
‘I’m at that special age: 12. It’s one of my favourite numbers. 12 isn’t just the sum of 10
(the base of our whole amazing number system) and 2 (the only even prime number in the
universe) but it’s the first number with 1, 2, 3 and 4 as factors. I reckon that’s so cool.’
Here’s a detective story with a difference. Eliot is twelve – and he thinks outside the box. He
can’t help it. Numbers are his thing – and letters. So when ‘the biggest mystery that struck our
school in the history of the world’ needs to be solved, Eliot is the one to call on.
But this time the solution doesn’t lie in the real world (or in the ‘real’ world of the story).
Instead, the solution lies inside the book itself – only it’s locked away in a series of puzzles and
palindromes. Can you find the clues, solve the puzzles and find the culprit?
Why Haven’t We Seen Aliens?
NON-FICTION
Stephen Rickard 9781781271001 £6.99
If there really is alien life elsewhere in the Universe, then it’s reasonable to ask why we haven’t
seen it. Surely our planet Earth would have been visited by aliens by now? Does that mean that
alien life doesn’t exist?
This book uses some simple maths to take a sober look at the chances of our actually meeting
alien life. After all, we will only meet up if both we and they are in the right place at the right
time. The Universe is a big place – and it has been around for a long time. Perhaps we were ‘out’
when they visited us.
Professional Development titles
for literacy staff
A fresh new series written for the busy, practising professional. Each book in the series focuses on a key literacy topic, with an
emphasis on providing practical suggestions that can be implemented in the classroom.
Recognising that busy professionals do not always have time to read a book from beginning to end, these books are
designed to be rewarding (and easy!) to dip into and browse for fresh ideas and perspectives. Each topic is covered in two
ways: first with a broad overview of the topic, followed by practical activity suggestions that can be used to engage the
children.
An essential part of every professional’s (and parent’s) toolkit.
NEW!
Motivating Reluctant and Struggling Readers
Stephen Rickard 220 pages 9781841679754 £22.50
An essential resource that focuses exclusively on motivating reluctant and struggling readers.
Children who struggle with reading often have a negative relationship with books and the
written word. As they read less and less, their literacy skills are not developed and they fall
further behind.
All titles in the Professional
Development series are 188
mm wide x 245 mm high. Full
colour cover, b/w text,
illustrated throughout.
This book offers practical activity suggestions to break
this vicious cycle and re-engage children with reading in
its broadest sense. Topics covered include: alternatives to
books, avoiding ‘switching children off’, using computers
and digital technology effectively and developing generic
strategies to overcome resistance to reading.
As with other books in this series, every chapter is followed by specific activity suggestions.
Unlocking the Reader in Every Child
Susan Elkin 233 pages 9781841679709 £22.50
Published in mid-2010 and fast becoming a classic,
Unlocking the Reader in Every Child has received fivestar
ratings from teachers.
Drawing on best practice over the years and avoiding ‘here
today, gone tomorrow’ fashions, this is a basic, quick-to-read
guide to teaching reading.
It is incredibly practical and its clear layout makes it an ideal
one-stop guide and resource. More than this though, it
provides a toolkit with practical activities, games and ‘try this’
ideas to help develop reading skills and
overcome obstacles.
An excellent resource for both
the literacy specialist and for anyone
with a passion for encouraging
reading for pleasure in young people.
It should find a place on every
parent's bookshelf and in every
school’s staff library.
Unlocking the Writer in Every Child
Susan Elkin 240 pages 9781841679716 £22.50
The essential companion to the successful ‘Unlocking
the Reader’, this new book focuses on the often
neglected issue of writing. It follows the same format
as its predecessor, offering explanation, tips and
guidance alongside practical activities to engage
and support writing.
Individual chapters focus on writing fiction, plays
and poetry, writing non-fiction and writing with
digital tools. A specific chapter also addresses
publishing children’s work.
Unlocking the Poet in Every Child
David Orme 200 pages 9781841679693 £22.50
The definitive book for teaching and supporting
poetry in the classroom. It looks at the ways in
which poetry supports many aspects of literacy
by making links with other curriculum areas, as well
as providing a huge variety of models for writing,
opportunities to consider grammar and punctuation
and to widen vocabulary.
The book covers strategies for teaching poetry and
includes over 60 differentiated poetry activity ideas,
each with accompanying poetry texts (written by the
author) to support the activity. An anthology of
poems (again written by the author) is also
included to support poetry in the classroom.
Forthcoming!
Unlocking Speaking and Listening in Every Child
Professional Development Pack £85
Four titles: ‘Unlocking the Reader’, ‘Unlocking the Writer’, ‘Unlocking the
Poet’ and ‘Motivating Reluctant and Struggling Readers’ 9781841677057
220 pages 9781841671383 £22.50
Unlocking children’s speaking and listening skills is crucially important in developing children’s
literacy and communication abilities. Good communication improves performance, is more
rewarding for the individual and builds children’s self-esteem.
This book, the latest addition to the successful ‘Unlocking ...’ series, includes sections covering
developing listening skills, speaking for a purpose, structuring group discussions, building self
esteem and social skills, word games and language play and assessing speaking and listening.
