From the President
The Board of Directors of Arlington Community Media Inc., (ACMI) and I, John D. Leone,
President, present to you ACMI’s fourth Annual Report. This year marks the completion
of ACMI’s fourth full year of operation as Arlington’s cable access provider. During
the past year we signed our second operating contract with the Town granting us an
additional three years of service to the community. ACMI is a fully functioning 501(c)
(3) nonprofit corporation. In compliance with IRS regulations we have had a full independent
audit of our financial books and records. The summarized results of that audit
are presented in this report. The Board is very pleased to report that ACMI once again
passed the audit with flying colors and is in sound financial health, having demonstrated
excellent financial controls and oversight.
Last year marked ACMI’s first full year of focusing its attention on creating more and
higher quality homegrown programming. We expanded our outreach efforts and our
workshop offerings, as well as devoting more staff time to assisting our new memberproducers
in learning the video arts. We increased our coverage of official town and
committee meetings, perfecting sound and image quality with new equipment. Town
Meeting utilized robotic cameras for the first time, resulting in excellent production
values for the folks watching at home.
The upgrades and improvements to our studio facility, the former Dallin Library, continue.
Our new and improved ACMI website, www.ACMI.tv, now features simultaneous
video streaming of our cablecasts. Now anyone anywhere can tune into or go online
for any of our programming via the internet.
Over the past year our staff has devoted countless hours to the community with many
successes. Chief among them this year were the Producers’ Meeting in early April and
the ACMI Awards banquet in late June. The Awards banquet showcased the potential
power and magic of citizen-produced television to many who had little knowledge of
ACMI’s existence and mission.
We are very proud of our accomplishments over the past year and we will continue
to provide to the entire Arlington community and our growing membership a great
media resource. We are also gratified by the steady increase of the town’s agencies,
organizations, and residents that are aware of the scope and power of ACMI’s contribution
to town life.
The Board and I thank you for your trust in us, we encourage you to view our community
programming, to look for our equipment and crews around Town and to join in
and become a member, volunteer or producer at ACMI, Arlington’s television station.
John D. Leone
President
2 ACMI 2010 Annual Report

From the Executive Director
“Life is change”, it has been said….and at ACMI this past year this has certainly been
the case. We have experienced changes in our programming, our policies, our building,
and our staffing–all in a growth pattern that is exciting to see.
It is gratifying to see all of the new faces passing my office door on their way to the
studio for a workshop or to create or participate in a production. Our active membership
has grown considerably and so there are many more volunteers who we can call
on to crew a show. As a result we have covered this year many more Town and
committee meetings.
Outreach this past year was extended to the Arlington Public Schools through presentations
made to the Superintendent’s Cabinet and the School Committee in order to
develop a more collaborative relationship. Even more exciting is the growth in ability
that some of our younger members have achieved at ACMI over the course of the year.
Many of our students are now producing shows of their own with minimal staff
supervision. As a result of his experience at ACMI, one student is now a college freshman
majoring in television production.
We felt it was time to raise the bar on our production standards and requirements and
so we convened a Producer’s Meeting in April. A packet of information was distributed
that contained policies and technical information that we felt would standardize our
procedures and improve the quality of programming produced at ACMI. This information
is now part of a New Members’ Packet.
Also new is our Media/Programming Coordinator, Sean Snyder, who
has created a new ACMI website with a fresh look. He also has begun to
include social media components such as Facebook and Twitter to get
the word out about ACMI.
The studio has been freshly painted and the edit lab, which was completed
last summer, has been a huge success. Due to its new configuration,
members who work in the editing lab area have easily been able to get
to know and assist each other. This is the essence of access television…
people helping people.
We ended the year with an Awards Dinner that was a spectacular event
for all and was truly a night to remember. It was an opportunity for ACMI to thank the
entire membership and to acknowledge those who have contributed their time and
efforts in producing new programming and in making ACMI what it is today.
And so “life is change” indeed …and at ACMI it takes place through the efforts of all of
our members and volunteers. We can’t wait to see what changes are in store for us all
next year as we continue to grow.
Norman J. McLeod
Membership
Arlington Community Media Inc. (ACMI) is a member-based, 501(c)(3) not-for-profit
organization incorporated in April 2003 and contracted by the Town of Arlington in
September 2006. ACMI’s active members numbered 318 as of June 30, 2010 – a
72% increase over the previous year’s membership of 185.
Membership is open to all who live in our town. A nominal annual membership fee,
due at the beginning of each ACMI fiscal year (July 1st), provides access to all the
features and benefits ACMI has to offer. These include: high-quality digital video
production equipment; the training to operate it effectively; the ability to borrow and
use it away from the studio; the use of all equipment, studio, and editing facilities; air
time on our Public, Education, and Government channels carried by RCN, Comcast,
and Verizon to all Arlington cable subscribers; a quarterly newsletter; and invitations to
ACMI special events and meetings.
4 ACMI 2010 Annual Report

The 2010 ACMIs
As ACMI president John Leone mentions in his message on page two, this past year
was the year we focused on training new members in television production so as to
increase the percentage of local programming on our channels. At the end of the fiscal
year, on June 25th, we were pleased to unveil the fruits of our labors by showcasing
78 member-producers as nominees at our very first awards ceremony on June 25th at
Town Hall. It was ACMI’s first chance in its four-year history to publicly acknowledge
the creative and technical achievements of its members. It was a fabulous evening, as
the images below will attest.
ACMI 2010 Annual Report 5

Community Outreach
Goodwill
Community outreach, in the end, is mostly accomplished by favorable word-of-mouth
buzz and the perception by the public of a general sense of organizational goodwill.
With that in mind, we are offering, for the second consecutive year, free production of
Public Service Announcements to our Town’s nonprofit organizations. Last summer
15 of them received free one-minute PSAs that would likely have cost them more
than a thousand dollars to produce at a commercial production house. Considerable
goodwill flowed from that gesture and it will likely be generated again by this year’s
free PSA productions at ACMI for a dozen new nonprofits.
Claiming a regional audience
While continuing our usual public presence among Arlington’s people and organizations,
we have begun to generate some buzz beyond our town’s borders. This is
mostly a result of streaming our programs on our website as they are being cablecast
on our channels via the Comcast, RCN, and Verizon networks. This makes it possible for
anyone on the planet with access to a computer and the internet to see our particular
brand of programming.
More specifically, our growing regional presence is mostly due to the success of a
weekly show produced at our studio—for more than 67 weeks now—every Tuesday
evening. Now appearing on broadcast television as well as on cable access TV, the
Steve Katsos Show (SKS) has established itself in New England as a popular showcase
The The Steve Katsos Show (SKS)
The phenomenon that arose in the ACMI studio and control room near the end of ACMI’s fiscal
year is one that has now surpassed all other productions in ACMI history. The Steve Katsos
Show, a weekly talent showcase series, has made the best and most intensive use of ACMI’s
television production resources and facilities to date. It has, in turn, provided ACMI members
the best possible learning and training environment ever.
The show has enjoyed unparalleled success in community access TV in New England (and now
beyond) , boasting a viewership of more than FOUR
MILLION homes. The show was recently picked up by
MY TV New England, a broadcast (not cable) network.
Katsos himself still has national ambitions and has
begun preliminary talks with the Comedy Central Network,
whose programming is viewable nationwide.
At the June 25th ACMI Awards, the Steve Katsos
Show’s First Anniversary Special won the ACMI Award
for Best Overall Production. The show’s second season
promises to be a record breaker as well and ACMI is
proud to be the show’s production home. Steve is
generous in giving ACMI credit for making the show
possible and, given the show’s increasing regional
popularity, that’s a good thing for ACMI’s image as a
first class studio.
6 ACMI 2010 Annual Report

of New England’s creative talent. Musicians, authors, actors, comedians, and others
appear on Steve’s weekly entertainment/talk show to be seen and heard throughout
this region and beyond. The Katsos series is the closest ACMI has yet come to ”going
viral” and we have been pleased to serve as the launch pad for Steve’s creative efforts.
The venture has been mutually beneficial. The SKS phenomenon has provided more
than a few of our members the opportunity to learn professional television production
skills by crewing for the series. ACMI is increasingly a spawning ground for producers
and technicians and provides a jumpstart on the way to advanced training and
entrance into the media workplace.
Name recognition
Our continuing weekly presence in the Arlington Advocate and online at YourArlington.com
and on our own website has produced a growing public awareness in
Arlington of ACMI’s existence and mission. We continue to place ads and articles in
the Advocate to promote our workshops and our coverage of special events, such as
Town Day, Town Meeting, elections, Thanksgiving Day football, the American Cancer
Society’s Relay for Life event at the Arlington High School, and the public notice of our
annual meetings. We also continue to place ads in local event publications such as
the Town Calendar, the Town Planner, the Philharmonic Society of Arlington’s concert
playbills, the Arlington League of Women Voters’ newsletter, the Arlington High School
graduation program bulletin, and the AHS annual spring musical playbill.
Arlington Town Day
Every September, the Town of Arlington holds its annual block party. The townspeople flock to
a five-block section of its main artery in Arlington Center, which is already clogged by colorful
booths of Arlington organizations and vendors. They surge among the booths and the throng
of visitors, being sure to stop by the Main Stage on the steps of Town Hall. There they see performances
by school cheerleaders, school bands, orchestras, choruses, and madrigal singers. Adult
bands play too, and Town Day 2009 featured a sketch artist who rendered huge portraits and
scenes on giant canvases while music played.
All of this grandeur, along with
interviews with town folk and VIPs
alike, is captured on digital video
cameras and sent LIVE to Arlington’s
cable-viewing public courtesy of the
ACMI TV staff and 30 ACMI-member
volunteers. It is a sight to behold,
and the decade of Town Days
archived on tape makes for a time
capsule library of great moments in
the life of our community.
Learning Opportunities
Workshops
ACMI has become known in the Greater Boston area as a well equipped community
TV access station. It is true that we are blessed with very high quality modern digital TV production gear and recording
facilities at 85 Park Avenue in Arlington Heights. What is more important, however, is our obligation to make it
accessible to our membership—both physically and cognitively. Therefore, we offer several basic workshops in the
operation and artistic use of our equipment and studio facilities.
Workshops at ACMI provide an opportunity to learn basic video and television production skills from the ACMI staff.
Next fiscal year workshops will be offered to ACMI members for $20, and to non-members for $40. Below are workshops
currently being offered.
Orientation Workshop:
Everything one needs to know to get started at ACMI – from becoming a member, to
taking training workshops, using our equipment, producing TV shows, or helping others
produce theirs. All while learning a marketable skill in the process.
Field Camera Workshop:
Gives ACMI members a basic understanding of how to set up and operate our Sony Z1U
and C9 portable cameras. This workshop also teaches the basics of shot composition and
audio recording. (Prerequisite: Orientation)
Adobe Premiere Basic Digital Editing:
Introduction to the Adobe Premiere digital video editing software, widely considered the
industry standard in video editing on the PC platform. Participants learn to capture video
to a computer’s hard drive for editing, and then to finalize it on a DVD. (Prerequisite:
Orientation and Field Camera)
Final Cut Pro Basic Digital Editing (two 3-hour sessions):
Guides participants through the basic and intermediate operations of Apple’s Final Cut
Pro, including video capture and logging, editing, trimming and fine tuning, adding transitions
and effects, audio editing, and basic graphics creation. Final Cut Pro is the industry
standard for creating and editing media on the Macintosh OS platform. (Prerequisite:
Orientation and Field Camera)
Studio Operations (one 3-hour session):
Designed to give a beginner’s overview of the in-studio process for LIVE and live-to-tape
TV productions. Participants learn the required tasks for each of the crew positions,
including: camera operator, floor manager, audio board operator, graphics operator,
teleprompter operator, technical director, and director. Pre- and post-production set-up
of the studio, set design and placement, microphone set-up, and studio lighting are also
covered.
Member Certification
The following is a listing of the number of members who have been certified in television
production through ACMI workshops. The number under each month and class
represents the number of ACMI members that have taken and completed a course in
that general area of production and that have been approved to use ACMI equipment
to produce programming for ACMI channels.
Volunteering at ACMI
ACMI volunteers, along with ACMI staff, make a big commitment each year to cover
public events. This year, once again, the volunteers helped us produce our coverage of
the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, The League of Women Voters’ Candidates
Debate, Arlington’s annual Town Meeting, The Arlington Redevelopment Board meetings
and other official meetings. And volunteers were an essential and much appreciated
part of the 2010 ACMI Awards evening at Town Hall just a week before the end of
the fiscal year.
ACMI member-producers depend on member-volunteers of diverse backgrounds to
collaborate with them in creating our growing schedule of community programming.
The interaction of diverse age groups also has been rewarding, and the Steve Katsos
Show has been a magnet for ambitious volunteers looking to increase their experience
in working on a successful ongoing production. Many of our in-studio and field productions
would not have been possible without this energetic and collaborative effort
by our volunteers and producers.
Learning Opportunities
(continued)
Youth Programs
AHS Focus Media:
AHS Focus Media is the production company that ACMI has created for
students at Arlington High School to provide them training by the ACMI staff in all
aspects of video production. The Focus Media group is currently producing AHS sports
programming and “Gamer’s Edge”, a video game review and demonstration program.
Most recently the group assisted with the production of the AHS 2010 graduation in
June. Members also took the lead in producing an all-night production of the American
Cancer Society’s Relay for Life event at the high school’s Pierce Field. AHS Focus
Media, a diverse group of students with lots of great ideas, has a bright future and is
generating a lot of buzz among AHS students with an interest in video and television
production. We can’t wait to see what they do during the 2010-11 academic year.
ACDC (Arlington Catholic Drama Club):
This tribe of talent, under the direction of Jackie Billings, participated in a series of
in-studio workshops with ACMI Studio Manager, Jeff Munro. Subsequently, student
Maggie Kearnan produced three “making-of” videos about school musicals Once Upon
a Mattress, Grease, and Nonecents.
AMP (Arlington Middleschool Producers):
The 2009–10 academic year was the second year for Arlington Middle-school Producers
(AMP). During the year the group produced 18 original programs and assisted
in various other productions at ACMI. AMP members, under the leadership of ACMI
staffer, J.R. Curtis and member-volunteer Kimberley Harding, took part in learning
activities that included multi-camera studio productions. Participants explored studio
production formats such as news and talk shows, and developed original scripts for
those shows. They also learned directing, technical directing, audio for television, teleprompter,
camera work, floor directing, and talent skills in front of the camera. The new
season for middle-school-aged producers starts in early October 2010.
Fidelity House
Youth programming from Fidelity House, an Arlington’s nonprofit after-school program
included on-site ACMI workshops with the participating youngsters, as well as
the taping and cablecasting of the organization’s unique gymnastics program.
A.C.E. SummerFun Workshop:
ACMI partnered with Arlington Community Education (ACE) again this year in presenting
a workshop for 7th, 8th, and 9th graders during the final week of July 2009. 15
students were trained on studio and remote cameras. They also learned hosting skills,
10 ACMI 2010 Annual Report

audio, directing, technical directing, teleprompter, and floor
directing. The students worked in groups to create small segments
that were compiled into one program at the end of the
weeklong workshop. It was a great week for everyone involved,
including the member-volunteers Brendan Crewe, Dave Vishniac,
Andrea Pizzi, Jared Bessette-Kirton, and Lucas Gradwohl
who assisted the ACMI staff. A couple of the SummerFun
workshop participants subsequently joined the middle-schoolproducers
or the high school group and have become active
ACMI members. The July 2010 workshop was fully registered
many months in advance and will be featured in the 2011 ACMI Annual Report.
High School Faculty Liaisons
New student-produced programming has become a reality through the cooperation
of the following AHS faculty:
Mr. DiTomaso – Music Technology, Arlington High School
Miss Kostanakis – Race in Society, Arlington High School
Mr. Pasquale Tassone – The Menotomy Music Series, Arlington Schools
Ms. Jackie Billings – AC Drama Club, Arlington Catholic High School
ACMI looks forward to deepening its connection to and support of high school curricula
next year.
Internship Program
ACMI has been granted by the Town of Arlington the wherewithal to produce Arlington
television programs by and for Arlington residents, organization, and agencies. We
are now the repository of high-end digital TV production equipment and the collective
knowledge and expertise of our board, staff, and members. It is our obligation
and our honor to empower our members by transferring access to that equipment,
knowledge, and expertise to them. One of the ways we do this is to welcome a small
handful of motivated young people into the ACMI Internship Program each year from
area schools.
This past year we focused on two high school seniors, Jared Bessette-Kirton, an Arlington
High School senior, and Brianna Dee, a Trinity High School senior. They both completed
the requisite hours of training, production tasks, and project wrap-ups. Jared
is now a college freshman majoring in television production, and Brianna a freshman
majoring in vocal music performance.
ACMI will continue the program for FY- 2010-11 and is currently considering applicants
from various area high schools and colleges, including Tufts University, the New England
Institute of Art, Lesley University, Minuteman High School, and Arlington High School.
ACMI 2010 Annual Report 11

Programming
This Year’s New Productions
This past year (July 01, 2009 – June 30, 2010) was the first full year that the ACMI staff
was able to focus mostly on expanding its program offerings, as opposed to its building
and grounds upgrade and new equipment purchase and installation. In order to
offer more programming, we needed first to offer more workshops for our growing
membership and assist new members in producing their first programs for airing on
our channels.
New programs produced this fiscal year include: coverage of Town Budget & Revenue
Task Force and Arlington Redevelopment Board meetings; a Special Town Meeting
with Governor Deval Patrick; A Healer in Every Home, about holistic health; Multicultural
Music Magazine; Natural Living, about alternative health and ecology; Never After, a new
locally-produced play; Tea With the Dallins, an historical piece from the Dallin Museum;
Mill Ponds, from the Arlington Historical Society; Wayne Schwamb Remembers, about
the Old Schwamb Mill; Stress Less, about strategies and techniques for stress reduction;
and The Making of Once Upon A Mattress, a behind-the-scenes look at an Arlington
Catholic High School Drama Club musical theatre production.
Due to our continually expanding outreach efforts, we expect a corresponding rise
in new programs during our 2010-11 fiscal year. For a complete listing of this year’s
programs, please see pages 15-17 of this report.
Rising Stars - Youth
The Ottoson Middle School TV production program (formerly ONN, then AMP), now under the
auspices of the Arlington Enrichment Collaborative, is meeting once per week at the ACMI studio
to produce regular programming under the direction of Diana Weisner and David Vishniac and
promises to be an excellent training ground for those who wish to continue producing video
and television projects with the Arlington high school group, Focus Media.
As the 2009-10 year came to an end, the Focus Media group
was experiencing a burst of creative energy and an influx of
interested producers. The production umbrella for the AHS
news show, Arlington Update, Focus Media began during the
summer to plan and produce a new program, Wicked Green, to
spark public awareness of pressing ecological issues. Incoming
sophomore, Amy Currul is the producer, with an able crew of
Focus Media veterans. Junior, Sam Mintz began his new show
on the local music scene, Arlingtones, and classmate, Lucas
Gradwohl, a longtime and active ACMI member, began plans
for his own new show about what is going on at Arlington
Community Media. Lucas will feature ACMI news and events,
behind-the-scenes video and staff interviews that will also be
available via the ACMI website.
Rising Stars - Adult
Aside from The Steve Katsos Show, whose stunning success is featured elsewhere in this report,
the rising stars among ACMI’s non-student members, are Begabati Lennihan who produces A
Healer in Every Home, and Tracy Miller and Wu So Fai who produce and edit Natural Living. Both
of these programs continue to produce new episodes on a regular basis and offer information
and insight into the increasingly popular domains of holistic health and organic living.
Add to these, Stress Less produced by Bob Kuhn and hosted by Mark Censky, and Multicultural
Music Magazine by Dr. Nish Sonwalkar and a growing pantheon of stars emerges to populate the
ACMI program sky. Showing practical and musical ways to find calm within the buzzing universe
of feverish activity and increasing anxiety, these programs offer a balance and serenity to our
programming schedule.
Of course, we cannot fail to mention the still-rising star that is Dave Sammarco. Chef Dave is still
pumping out new episodes of his award-winning Just Cook It! show and still catering to the taste
of Italian food and southern BBQ fans. He still shines on the Arlington Town Day main stage
with his Dave Sammarco Band, and these days he and his fashion designer wife Nicole (who is
from Haiti), are working overtime on fundraisers for the Haitian people who struggle to recover
from the devastating effects of the recent earthquake there.
All of us here at ACMI salute these creative and reliable member-producers who consistently
bring thought provoking and entertaining program content to our channels and viewers.
Programming
(continued)
P.E.G. Programming
P.E.G. programming is unique to community access television, as no other broadcast or
cable television network is organized around the public’s universal access to uncensored
local community programming designed specifically for these three areas of
public interest.
Public
Our Public channel features programming by our member-producers, often produced
using ACMI equipment and studio facilities. We also air programs from other public
access channels and independent producers, including a few distributed via satellite,
such as Classic Arts Showcase and Democracy Now!.
Education
Our Education channel features educational programs, shows produced by local students,
and programs made about them by community producers.
Government
Our Government channel features programming by and
information about town governmental bodies, agencies,
and committees, including the Board of Selectmen,
the School Committee, the Redevelopment Board, the
Budget Revenue Task Force, and the Town Reorganization
Committee.
Multiculturalism at ACMI
ACMI’s membership roster and its programming schedule has been enriched by its multicultural
diversity. Several current programs highlight this international flavor.
ACMI’s coverage of Arlington’s Sister City Project with Nagaokakyo Japan during
the Town Meeting opening ceremonies is one example. The Sister City celebration
coverage continued in collaboration with ACMI’s Middle School Producers
and coordinators of the Cherry Blossom Festival. One observer commented: “I
loved watching the dancing, the concert choir, and even the Town Moderator
and the Chairman of the Board of Selectmen speaking Japanese. What a show!”
The Sudanese Education Center Special offers another example. It presented the
stories of Sudanese Women in collaboration with Village Help for South Sudan.
ACMI member-volunteer, Malong Malual, coordinated the effort and did his own
on-camera interview as part of the show.
Other examples include: The Indian Kitchen with Rukmini Srinivas; Namaste: The Light in Me Sees
the Light in You, produced by Anandhi Rajamarichamy; Justice for Women, an interview with tortured
Guatemalan, Gladys Monterroso, Produced by Sara Alfaro-Franco; and Multicultural Music
Magazine, produced by Dr. Nish Sonwalkar.
Equipment
ACMI expanded its Master Control programming server from 1TB to 6TB to provide
greater program storage capacity and added a Waveform/Vector and control room
monitor for better testing and control functionality. The Edit Lab gained a MacPro
computer for faster image processing. A portable Green Screen kit, with lights and
stands, was purchased for use in studio effects. New audio booth equipment for
sports was acquired. Two additional robotic cameras were purchased to assist in the
coverage of ACMI programs like Town Meetings, the Patriots Day parade, sports, election
coverage, and Town Day.
Our Staff
There are a lot of steps that must be taken between having a good idea about new
programs to produce, new workshops to offer, and new technology to integrate into
our operation as your community television station and the actual materialization
of that idea. It is the ACMI staff that actualizes new ideas and proposals or teaches
its members to do so. Each staff member has been selected for his or her skills in the
process of making programming ideas a reality.
This year we welcomed a new member to our staff with the goal of expanding the
expanded functionality of our website, giving it more streaming video, easier access to
our programming schedules, more social media connections, and laying the groundwork
for video-on-demand (VOD). Sean Snyder, our Media/Programming Coordinator
is succeeding brilliantly in this endeavor.
ACMI’s middle-school and high school members, and as director of Town Meeting
widening ACMI’s coverage of government and school committee meetings as well as
