Second Worldwide Quality Service Contest semifinalists, organizers and service executives.
Circled from left to right are 1) bronze winner Doug Eggenburg, 2) silver winner Alberto Luis
Perero, 3) gold winner Kenneth Mueller-Rasmussen.
Eleven finalists in Toshiba’s Second
Worldwide Quality Service Contest were
flown to Japan in March to compete for
Toshiba’s coveted gold, silver and bronze Service
Awards. These outstanding finalists
emerged from a field of approximately 3500
Toshiba technicians who qualified for the worldwide
competition.
The Gold went to Kenneth Mueller-Rasmussen
of Denmark.
The Silver to Alberto Luis Perero of Argentina.
The Bronze to Douglas Eggenburg of the USA.
The contest drew entrants from all Toshiba
regions:
USA and Latin America (TABS)
Canada (TCL)
Europe (TEG)
Australia New Zealand (TAP)
Asia, Middle East and Africa (TSP)
Russia, Hong Kong and Taiwan (FE)
Japan (TIE & TOCT)
The contest is designed to measure the skills
of technicians who service Toshiba products
and to recognize and honor those with outstanding
product maintenance knowledge.
At TABS, each participating dealer and international
distributor selected a “champion”
to compete in the contest. The champions
took a written exam covering current product
lines including copiers, facsimiles, color,
networking, controllers and accessories.
gineering offices, we had 90 minutes to answer
50 questions on a written exam. Then
we had the practical test — the troubleshooting
—- which took 60 minutes. I found 10
faults in about 35 minutes. After lunch we had
90 minutes to do a PM.
“During the faultfinding and the PM we had
our own private judge watching over us.”
The highest-scoring champion from each of
the four Service regions and one from the
international distributors were then given a
second written exam and the two top-scoring
finalists from that exam were flown to
Japan for the final competition.
In Japan, the finalists took a written test, performed
a troubleshooting exercise and conducted
a PM, all under the watchful eyes of
individual judges.
First-place winner, Kenneth Mueller-
Rasmussen, a technician for Horsens
Kantor Teknic A/S, in Denmark, said that he
prepared for the contest by studying service
manuals and handbooks, reading technical
specifications, and by “getting to know the
machines.”
Regarding the trip agenda, he said, “We arrived
in Tokyo on Sunday afternoon and were
directed to our hotel. The next morning, after
an opening ceremony at the company’s en-
Commenting on Japan, he said, “There are
so many people, and they are everywhere, in
their cars, going by train, walking… and everyone
is smiling and acting so polite. In Japan
there are 12 million people: in my city
there are 55,000!”
Second-place winner, Alberto Luis
Perero of Ranko S.A., Argentina, said that
he was enticed to join the contest because
he wanted to visit a place as distant as Japan
and he wanted to see the company’s
design and manufacturing facilities.
“I prepared for the contest by reviewing the
main points of the courses that I took, and I
also reviewed the manuals, Tech Nets, and
the bulletins.” Perero said.
“The contest was very well planned and organized
and an experience I will never forget.
There was great comradery between the
participants and the people who organized
the contest. At the presentation ceremony we
also had an opportunity to meet all of Toshiba

Vol. 9 No. 3 APRIL/MAY 2001 Page 3
TEC’s executives and the service managers
from Toshiba’s subsidiaries.
“I was very surprised and pleased to receive
the second place awards — the medal, the
trophy and the watch —- because I had only
worked with the Toshiba line for about four
years.
“Upon my return home I received compliments
from all our employees and customers.
My company also ran a story about me
on our web site.”
“The people at Toshiba made our visit very
special. I appreciate everything that they
did for us. And I will enter the contest again
next year.”
During their five-day stay in Japan the finalists
were given guided tours to various
parts of the country. They visited Mt. Fuji,
sailed on a catamaran, and wore kimonos
at a Japanese-style dinner and dined on
sushi. They also had an opportunity to
sightsee and visit the Toshiba factory and
science museum.
Doug Eggenburg, third-place winner,
works for California Office Systems, Inc., in
Long Beach, California. He said that his
service manager entered him in the competition
because he felt he could win.
George Colborn, TABS Vice President,
Service said, “The contest affords Toshiba
several important benefits.”
“I didn’t do anything special to prepare for
the contest,” Doug said. “I was very surprised
that I won the US competition because I really
didn’t do much studying. I’m just lucky to
have a good memory.
“I felt the written exam was the most difficult
part of the contest in Japan because it dealt
with theory, and it was closed book. The
contest was well organized and fair. They
gave us plenty of time to finish our tasks.
“I really enjoyed meeting all the other contestants.
We all had the same service stories
to tell.
“First, it gives us an opportunity to recognize
and reward our most talented technicians,
which is an incentive to others to
enhance their service skills.
“The contest also gives us an opportunity
to collect comments and opinions about
Service issues from the thousands of technicians
in our networks. We then combine
this information with our various dealer
service surveys to expand our support
functions.
“The Worldwide Quality Service Contest
is a worldwide win-win program that benefits
our technicians, our dealers and, most
importantly, our customers.”

SC-1 HARD DRIVE RETURNS
When you return an SC-1 drive to Toshiba for core credit, you must use the
proper form. You can download the form from Tech-to-Go in the Downloads ~
General items ~ Forms ~ SC1 HDD RETURN FORM. The correct form is dated
3/16/01. Or, the Parts Customer Service Department can fax the form to you.
KR-7016 NETWORK RELAY CABLE
The KR-7016 uses a network cable to connect the board to the RJ-45 Ethernet
jack on the back of the copier. The earliest installations of the cable may exhibit
performance problems in 100 MB networks. An upgrade is available by ordering
P/N 4402-996270.
The new cable can be identified by its color (white); the original cables were
black. The new cables should be installed in all 100 MB installations or in environments
where the user is experiencing network communication problems.
LP2500 / 3500 FADED COPIES
If the transfer roller (SPL pg 7-36 item 1) is installed with the transfer roller gear
on the wrong side of the machine, the left side of copies will appear faded.
When installed incorrectly, the roller gear contacts the drum which lifts the roller
off the drum. To fix the problem, make sure the transfer roller is on the right, as
shown in the illustrations on page 16 attached. Run a few copies after replacing
a transfer roller to make sure the system is operating properly.

Page 8 APRIL/MAY 2001 Vol. 9 No. 3
LP2500/3500 FUSER CLEANER
Most fusers are cleaned by a fuser cleaning unit that has a felt wiper pad. However,
the LP2500/3500 does not have a fuser cleaner. Where the wiper would
normally be there is a plastic spacer that does not contact the fuser roller.
In the Service Parts List (pg 7-31 Item 2) a “Wiper Assembly, Wet” (P/N 99A0725)
is shown. This fuser wiper should be used when the customer prints on label
stock. The Wiper Assembly is not recommended for duplex printing.
The Wiper Assembly can be ordered from the Parts Department.
