High School is committed
to developing the
full potential of
each student by
providing exceptional
learning experiences.
Dear Parents and Students,
On behalf of the faculty and staff of LHWHS, let me express our
excitement about the impending start of the 2011-12 school year.
While the summer break allows for rest and rejuvenation, it is time
to turn to thoughts of a new school year. The faculty and staff are
busy preparing for a new year of learning. We are fully expecting
great things and exciting times from the student body of LHWHS as
we journey together through the school year!
In this newsletter, you will find information regarding the start of the
school year. In addition, you will soon receive a mailing that includes
the annual Census Verification Report and Student Health Form.
Both forms must be signed and returned to the school even if no
updates are needed. In addition, beginning with the 2011-12 school
year, each high school student will be assessed a $50.00 Activity
Fee. This fee will help offset the costs of clubs, activities, guest
speakers, field trips, classroom materials, etc. The separate mailing
you receive will include a blue envelope for the fee. We ask for your
assistance in returning the Census Verification Report, the Student
Health Form, and the Activity Fee during the packet pick-up dates
in August.
As August 15, the first day of school draws near, the faculty, staff and
I look forward to seeing and working with each of you. As a reminder,
packet pick-up (including schedules) for sophomores, juniors, and
seniors is August 8 and 10 from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. Freshman orientation
is August 8 at 8 a.m. and New Student Orientation is August 11
at 9 a.m. Practices for fall sports begin on August 8; a schedule for
first day practices is located in this newsletter. If you have additional
questions, please do not hesitate to call us at 993-6447. Once again,
we look forward to a great 2011-12 school year!
Sincerely,
Bridget Hermann, Ed.D.
Student Support Services
The Student Support Services team reminds parents and teens that high school students need basic supplies
to be successful in the classroom as well as when doing nightly homework.
Suggested supplies include:
*Two 2”(three-ring) binders with inside pockets (one for Blue Day and one for White Day) (Binders are easier
to keep organized than notebooks)
*plastic dividers with pockets, (one per subject) -OR- plastic folder inserts for the binder plus tabbed dividers
(again, one per subject)
*loose leaf notebook paper
*pen/pencils, multiple colored highlighters
*binder insert to hold pens, pencils, etc.
* 3-hole puncher (to add handouts and study guides from teachers to the binders)
*Post-It notes and index cards for summarizing, color-coding, jotting questions for the teacher, etc.
*Flash drive Most students purchase a flash drive to transfer computer files to/from school/home. These can
now be found in the $10 range at many stores. Students who begin writing papers at school or home, can
then save them to the data stick, and transfer the work back and forth from school to home in order to complete
assignments.
Some students even choose to carry a Blue Day backpack and a White Day backpack in order to decrease the
heavy loads and to keep materials easily organized and retrieved.
Coming to each class with supplies says: I care about academics, and I am here to learn. I have high academic
expectations for myself.
If purchasing supplies for your student is a financial concern, please send your child to one of the Student
Support Services teachers who will help them get what is needed privately. Remind your students that they
can always come to any of the Student Support Services team for tips on study strategies and organization.
Student Support Services is also here to answer questions for you as parents. Call 993-6447 and ask for any
one of us, or email with your questions:
ATTENDANCE
Because a well-educated citizenry is a goal of democratic society, Missouri statues (RSMo 167.031, 167.061)
mandate school attendance and compel school officials to monitor compliance.
Student Attendance Policy
Philosophy: Regular attendance is vital to the success of students. Ladue High School values attendance and
punctuality. Students are expected to attend classes daily and to arive on time. Students should maintain a
good attendance record because a direct relationship exists between school attendance and grades, citizenship,
and overall success in school. Students and parents should understand that absences, whether excused or
unexcused, negatively impact student learning and the student’s grade in class. Furthermore, the regular interaction
of students with one another in the classroom and their participation in well-planned learning activities are
necessary parts of the learning process. Absence from school may be necessary under certain conditions, especially
for certain chronic illnesses. The school has a compelling interest to ensure that students attend class.
• School hours are 7:40 a.m. to 2:20 p.m.
• Students are expected to arrive at school and to all classes on time.
• The attendance policy is calculated and implemented on a
semester basis.
Excusing a Student
1. Parents/guardians are responsible for telephoning the Attendance Office at 993-4540 on the day the student is
absent from school. An answering machine is available 24 hours a day to accept calls from parents in advance
or on the day of the absence. Telephone requests for early dismissal of a student shall be honored only if the
caller can be positively identified as the student’s parent or guardian. Any absence not verified by the parent/
guardian within 48 hours after the student returns to school will count as an unexcused absence. Written messages,
including e-mails, will be accepted, but such messages MUST include a contact telephone number for
verification. Any person requesting release of a student must present proper identification prior to release of the
student. Students who are 17 years old and living independently and students 18 years or older must validate
their own attendance and dismissal.
Students Leaving During the School Day
Students may not leave campus during school hours without checking out through the Attendance Office. A parent/guardian
must call the Attendance Office prior to the student leaving campus. A voice mail is always available
to receive these calls. The Attendance Office will issue a dismissal pass, which the student must show to
his or her teacher before being dismissed from class. The student must sign out at the Attendance Office before
leaving campus.
Students Arriving/Returning Late to School
Students arriving late to school or returning while school is still in session must sign in at the Attendance Office
and receive a pass to class.
Tardiness
A student is considered tardy when he or she enters the class after the bell has rung. Individual teachers may
establish further requirements (e.g., being seated, having materials ready, etc.). Arriving to class more than 40
minutes late without a pass will be considered an unexcused absence. A student who has three (3) tardies to
class in a grading period will receive an “I” citizenship grade and parents will be notified. A fourth tardy may result
in a “U” citizenship grade, parent contact, student conferences, and after-school detention.
Impact of Absences and Tardiness on Citizenship Grades
1. If a teacher lowers a citizenship grade due to one or more unexcused absences or tardies, teachers will notify
parents of the lowered grade.

Rambler yearbook and Panorama newspaper are sold as a publications package, with Herff Jones Yearbook
Company handling orders and billing. LHWHS families will receive a mailing from Herff Jones some time in September.
Herff Jones accepts orders until early December, processes the forms and bills parents directly by mail.
STUDENTS DO NOT PAY AT SCHOOL. DO NOT SEND PAYMENT TO SCHOOL. After Herff Jones receives full payment,
a yearbook/newspaper package is ordered for the student. Students pick up their Panorama newspaper monthly
at school. The yearbook is distributed at the end of the year. Ordering in advance is the only way to ensure that
your student will get a yearbook.
CONF. COMPENSATION DAY

Dear High School Students and Parents:
Allow me to introduce myself — I am Sue Blumm, Director of Dining Services for Chartwells School Dining
Services. My staff and I are happy to once again provide the food service for students and staff in the School
District of the City of Ladue. We would like to take this opportunity to highlight some of the policies for the
2011-12 school year:

point of sale cash register in its cafterias. These registers make it easy for students to purchase lunch without
the need to carry cash. Students simply key in a PIN number to record their purchases at the high school. The
amount of purchase is automatically deducted from the student’s account. High school students have the
option of using their PIN number or paying cash for lunches.

your life easier. This program will allow you to make deposits into your student’s school lunch account online
as well as check the account balance at any time. Money deposited into mySchoolBucks.com will usually arrive
at the school by the next morning. Additional information will be sent out to each family regarding this
new program.
Checks for deposit into your child’s lunch account will continue to be accepted and should be sent to your
child’s school. Please be sure to include your child’s name and grade, as well as your name, address and
phone number to assure proper credit to your child’s account.
dents
are allowed to eat on credit only until their balance reaches negative $10. At that point students must
pay cash for their meals and settle their account with the cafeteria office. We encourage everyone to consult
the monthly menu and choose meals from our plate lunch line. These meals are nutritionally balanced per
USDA Guidelines and are a great value. The plate lunch price is $2.65 for full pay and .40 cents for those
who qualify for reduced lunches. Anyone that qualifies for the “Free or Reduced Lunch” must take the plate
SIX-WEEK GRADING PERIOD
LHWHS implemented a six-week grading period last year. This change does not affect the credit structure
for courses. The purpose is to provide progress information to students and parents in a more timely fashion.
Grade reports will be issued at the six and twelve week intervals of a semester instead of just the nine
week interval in the quarter system. The semester grade will continue to be the final transcripted grade.
The following are the end dates for grading periods for first semester:
September 23
November 4
December 21 (end of semester)

SCHEDULE CHANGE PROTOCOL
The purpose of the schedule change protocol is to ensure individual students complete State of Missouri
and Ladue School District graduation requirements and to ensure optimal utilization of the master
schedule developed for all students.
The following questions/criteria will be used to determine whether or not schedule changes will be
made:
1. Is this course needed to fulfill a graduation requirement?
2. Did the student request the class during their original course request session?
3. Student grade level: 12th grade students will be given priority in making schedule changes, then 11th
grade students, then 10th grade students, and then 9th grade students.
4. Are there seats available in the class section? Students will not be moved from one course section to
another if the course section the student is changing to is larger than the original course section.
If the answer to questions 1, 2, and/or 4 is “no”, then the schedule change may not be made.
Common Application Suspension Notice Requirement
The Common Application is a document used by many colleges and universities across the country for college
admittance. Your son or daughter will most likely complete this application during his or her senior
year. One question on the Common Application asks that the student and the school report whether or not
the student has been suspended from school at any time during his or her high school career.
As a result of requirements of the Common Application, a change in Board Policy JG was made that affects
all students graduating in the class of 2012 and after who use the Common Application to apply for college.
The Ladue Board of Education Policy JG states:
“Beginning with the graduating class of 2012, all out-of-school suspensions on the students’ record at the
time of reporting will be reported on the Common Application, or any other college/university application
that requires or requests such reporting.”
There are times in some students’ careers when mistakes are made that merit an out-of-school suspension.
Please know that if this occurs, your college advisor will work with your student to provide appropriate
explanation and minimize the impact of a suspension on college entrance. As a school, we will speak with
students regarding the consequences of certain actions, but it is important for all parents to speak with
their students about this policy as well. Our goal is to inform and notify students and parents of the potential
repercussions of suspendable actions and to work together to insure a successful and productive high
school experience.

2011 LHWHS OPEN HOUSE
The 2011 LHWHS Open House is scheduled for Thursday, August 25 at 7 pm.
The purpose of Open House is for teachers to present information that will focus on learning and what
students should know and be able to do as a result of attending each of their courses. Overviews of
special projects, major assignments, assessment methods, grading scales, and other important aspects
of each course may also be discussed. Contact information including teacher email addresses,
voicemail extensions, and website information will also be provided.
Please be aware that Open House is not a time to conduct individual conferences or discuss specific
concerns with your student’s classroom teacher. Such conversations, if necessary, should be scheduled
individually with the teacher(s) in question at an alternate time.
If possible, access Infinite Campus through the parent portal and print your student’s schedule prior
to arriving that evening. We will have schedules available in the Performing Arts Center lobby beginning
at 6:30 pm, but this will save you time prior to the beginning of Open House.
We look forward to seeing you on August 25.
