From
the
Rector
You may be familiar with the hymn “Dear Lord and
Father of Mankind”, with its lovely, lilting tune –
but what you may not know is that it’s taken from
a longer poem by the American poet John
Greenleaf Whittier. The first half of “The Brewing
of Soma” is in stark contrast with the later, betterknown
verses. It evokes the powerful image of a
group of Vedic priests taking part in a primeval ritual.
Gathered around a blazing fire and smoking
cauldron, they concoct and knock back a potent
hallucinogenic drink, which is extracted from plant
stalks. As the potion takes hold they become rejuvenated
and revived until they’re in a state of
“drunken joy”, wildly praising the gods, believing
they’re experiencing divinity.
As a Quaker, Whittier believed in simple worship,
and wrote his poem to show how drinking soma
produced “fever of the blood and brain”, rather
than a real experience of God. His point was that
some Christians had become intoxicated by a
heady mix of euphoria and rapture in worship, and
that “music, incense, vigils drear, and trance”, created
a false sense of divinity, as soma did for the
priests.
It’s ironic that Whittier’s poem is nowadays often
sung in hymn form at the kinds of services he
might not entirely approve of. But whether we go
for reflection, ritual or rapture, what really matters
is that our worship enables us to speak and listen
to God. Because however, wherever and whenever
we worship, and even if we don’t worship at all, our
fundamental human yearning is to be in communication
with God.
So how on earth, in the hurly-burly of daily life, do
we find the space and the time? Well, the first step
is to accept that God speaks to us all the time. The
second step is to soften our souls so we’re receptive.
And that’s the tricky part, because in the
growing-up process we become hardened. As children
we race headlong into adventure, only to suffer
scraped knees. As teenagers, we rush headstrong
into romance, only to suffer broken hearts.
So through life we become more cautious, and in
the process most of us lose the adventurer and
romantic within us – but it takes elements of both
to listen to the voice of God.
– that tree was dangerous to climb, and that
teenage romance was downright foolish. So how to
reverse the hardening process without getting carried
away by every crazy delusion or wild hallucination?
For myself the answer is to make time for
worship and devotion. That doesn’t mean we have
to make the church our home, or even that we necessarily
have to give up more time. But it does
mean that, when we’re praying, we’re totally
focused on prayer, and when we’re worshipping,
that’s all we’re doing.
Nobody can tell anybody what God’s voice sounds
like, or how God speaks to people. But the last
verse of Whittier’s poem, based on that extraordinary
passage in 1 Kings 19:11-13, where Elijah is
searching for God, is a wonderful image.
Whitbourne WI
Our December meeting took the
form of our Christmas American
Supper. The Hall looked very
bright with crackers and table
decorations and, of course, the
groaning food table and background
carols.
Mary, our new President, began
by thanking Heather for her
three years as President, and the
Committee, some of whom are
still serving. Heather was presented
with a bouquet of flowers
in appreciation of her hard work.
We had a card from Martley WI
thanking us for our jolly Group
Carol Service which they had
enjoyed immensely, very lighthearted
and finishing off with tea
and coffee and welcome refreshments.
We were then invited to help ourselves
to the first course, and
boy, was it good! Much chatter
ensued before Pauline Maidment,
a past President now living in
France, entertained us with a
brief account of the local French
equivalent of WI in her new
home. Delicious puddings followed,
then Heather, Meg and Di
treated us to the funniest pantomime
story of Snow White that
we have ever heard. Everyone
roared with laughter at this, so
entertaining and very cleverly
written.
Secret Santa presents for all then
caused much hilarity, and we finished
off with a welcome cup of
tea or coffee ( and more chatter).By
the time we had finally
cleared away we had all had a
lovely evening, and now look forward
to another year of friendship
and some frivolity.
If there are any newcomers to the
Village, or any ladies who would
like to join us we would be very
pleased to see them. We meet on
the second Tuesday of each
month, and next month we will
publish our programme for
2011.
Happy New Year to everyone. I
do hope everyone has recovered
from all the winter bugs doing
the rounds and that there were
not too many tumbles in the bad
weather.
Our first meeting of 2011 will be
on Wednesday 2nd February at
11:00 am in the Village Hall.
Hopefully the weather will have
improved by then and we will be
able to catch up on all the chat
we have missed over the last couple
of months. We will be having
a small delayed Christmas/New
Year celebration, so come along
and enjoy yourselves. We will
also discuss any plans for the
year, so if you have any suggestions
for speakers etc during the
year, please bring them along.
Tedstone Delamere
On Sunday December 19th, 12 of
us trudged through the snow to
the Carol Service. The Rector was
ill so William North led the service
and David Harrington was
organist. The church looked lovely;
thank you to Elsie Baughton
and Joyce and Sue Benbow for
their help with the decorating.
After the service, 22 of us were
welcomed to the Line House for
lunch, The lounge was beautifully
decorated with holly and a
Christmas tree and warmed with
a roaring log fire. It was especially
enjoyable for me because I was
born at the Line House and spent
many happy Christmases with
my family. My thanks to Will and
Janet McMorran for looking after
us all so well, for the delicious
food and drink and for Janet’s little
helpers, Janet Rallings and
Laura Harris. A good time was
had by all. Will brought me home
on his machine – that was an
unforgettable experience,
thanks, Will!
There were 18 in church on
Christmas morning, so well done,
everyone.
A happy and healthy New Year to
all.
On behalf of everyone along
Bottom Lane, Boat Lane and
Tedney, I would like to thank the
people who were, seen or unseen,
gritting Church Bank in the bad
weather, to make it passable. It
really makes a huge difference to
us all, and enabled us to get up
and down safely.
I particularly would like to thank
Gordon Cupper, who used a
shovel and also his own JCB, and
also Jason, who has recently
moved into Glebe Edge. We are
all looking forward now to moving
on into Spring!
Thank you all.
Election plans begin
Council elections on May 5 may
seem a long way away, but for
those thinking of standing, either
for the parish council or for
Herefordshire Council, time is
relatively short. All seats on
parish councils in Herefordshire
are up for re-election, as are all
seats on Herefordshire Council.
Nominations need to be in by
April 4 and the Herefordshire
Association of Local Councils is
holding a meeting for all parish
clerks on February 8 when the
Electoral
Services
Manager/Deputy Returning
Officer will talk about the elections.
Colette Maund from
Herefordshire Council’s Electoral
Services section explained that
nomination packs will also be
made available for parish clerks
to take away, which will cover the
number of seats up for re-election.
Nomination packs will also be on
the Herefordshire Council website
for people to download, or
they can collect a nomination
pack from the Town Hall in
Hereford. The nomination papers
are slightly different for
Herefordshire Council and these
can also be downloaded from the
website or are available at the
Town Hall.
All nomination papers must be
received at the Elections Office at
Town Hall, St Owen Street,
Hereford, and they can start
coming in from Friday 25 March
to 12 noon on 4 April 2011. Any
nominations papers received
after 12 noon on 4 April will be
A new Localism Bill, going
through Parliament at the
moment, could bring extra powers
to local people and all levels
of local government.
invalid.
Anyone can be a parish councillor,
as long as they are 18 or
over, and either a British citizen,
a Commonwealth citizen, a citizen
of the Irish Republic or a citizen
of another European Union
State. They must also be either in
the list of electors for the parish
in which they are seeking a seat
or have, during the whole of the
preceding twelve months;
(i) occupied land as owner or tenant
in it, or
(ii) had a principal place of work
there, or
(iii) resided in or within three
miles of it.
New powers for local people
These will enable people to instigate
local referendums on any
issue, to approve or veto in a referendum
a council tax increase
deemed to be excessive, to
express an interest in running
local authority services and to
provide local community groups
The nomination packs also contain
detailed information on the
factors which may disqualify
someone from standing.
The cost of an election for the
parish is considerable – the table
below illustrates this in a breakdown
of expenses, for the election
to one seat on the parish
council in 2009.
We would like to offer those who
are standing for a seat, either
parish or main council, to send
us 150 words on why the voters
should choose them – this is
open to all candidates and we
will print their contributions in
the May magazine. All contributions
should be received by us by
April 10th, by e-mail please.
with an opportunity to bid to buy
assets of community value.
The Parish Magazine
Support welcomed in Tanga
We made it! Many thanks to
everybody who contributed to
the Whitbourne Christmas
Appeal for the orphans in our
link parish in Tanzania. Our target
was £800 – but we actually
exceeded that and I was able to
send £1000. This will be spent
mainly on sending around thirty
orphans to primary school.
Although primary school is
nominally free, they do need to
buy shoes, uniform, exercise
books and pens, and they do
need to contribute to a school
fund which, for example, pays
for a night watchman. This all
comes to around £24 per child
(think what it would cost in this
country!). Secondary school fees
come to nearer £40 (costs vary
with the exchange rate) and there
are also exam fees to pay. With
55 secondary school-age
orphans, we cannot afford fees
for all – but we are making a significant
difference.
I have also sent £1000 from the
George Walker Fund (money
given to us last year from the
Trades School Foundation). This
is for sponsoring students for
vocational education. Last year
there were six. Two have now
finished their courses (Catering,
and Hotel Management) and are
looking for jobs, the other four
are going on to their second year.
The church at Mapinduzi has
undergone renovation. The roof
had all but collapsed, and they
were having to take umbrellas to
services. We helped with the cost
of the new roof and ceiling. Now
they need eight more windows
and electricity – and when that is
done they can carry on with the
new church hall, which is now at
foundation level.
The situation is improving at the
Leprosy Centre at Misufini. Now
that they have a new Manager,
Anna Mgelwa, this was the main
focus of our fund-raising during
2010. As a result, they now have
two big water tanks, for harvesting
rainwater (one provided by
the St. Francis Leprosy Guild), a
new cowshed, a bicycle, and a
new heifer who had calved two or
three weeks previously and is
giving around ten litres of milk
per day – not bad for a little cow
in those conditions. Money for
the latter was given partly by
Whitbourne Farmers and partly
by private donations. Next on
their ‘wants list’ is more cows
(and eventually a Biogas unit), a
small dam (water tanks can only
collect water when it rains) and
accommodation for staff so that
they can stay over-night. There
is a small house, but no bathroom
and it needs repair.
While we were in Tanzania we
visited another Leprosy Centre
near Arusha. It is run by German
Sisters, and is a good example of
what can be done. There are
money-raising projects for
women (making school uniforms),
for children (making
Christmas crackers), and even
the men make beads and necklaces.
Leprosy is decreasing in
Tanzania. With modern medicine
there is no need for segregation
and the plan is to use Misufini
eventually as a general centre for
the disabled.
We visited several schools and
colleges to look at computer provision.
The government is doing
great things for education.
Many new universities mean that
many teachers are there upgrading
their qualifications. Many
new secondary schools mean a
shortage of teachers anyway. At
each school we visited the situation
is the same; the ones who
have computers do not have
enough rooms or enough electricity
or enough time or money
to do anything about it. At the
moment there are just not
enough teachers. The new policy
of providing pre-school education
(primary school starts at age
7) means that children should be
better-educated when progressing
to secondary school. But it
all takes time and money – in ten
years time the situation should
be completely different. In the
meantime, we are still sending
computers – mostly, this year,
through Computers4Africa, who
are doing a great job.
The micro-finance scheme at
Amboni is going well and we visited
four of their projects – a stationery/computer
shop offering
Internet facilities, two small
farmers improving their cows,
and another farmer who has
planted two acres with cassava.
So thank you for your money,
thank you for your help, thank
you for your support. This year,
2011, we will be raising money
for another cow at Misufini and
windows for St. Francis’ church.
Transport came to the fore at
Whitbourne school right at the
start of the new term, first when
our hot meals supplier, Queen
Elizabeth Humanities College,
was closed on the first Friday of
term because of heavy snow, and
later in the curriculum.
Staff and parents had to raid
their larders to provide packed
lunches for about 20 children
who had come expecting a hot
meal – a (literally) heaven-sent
opportunity for a healthy-eating
lesson and a masterclass in how
to make sandwiches at speed! We
would like to thank all those who
helped that day – they showed
community spirit at its best.
Transport of all kinds, its effect
on us and the ways in which we
use vehicles, has been among the
themes across the school in the
early part of the term, with a traffic
survey by Class 1, and some
fine models from Classes 2 and 3
to bring in a designer or landscaper
to help make this space a
great place to learn. Eleven
experts responded to our call for
professional input, and we can
now choose from a shortlist of
three people who are committed
to developing this area. It will
include a pond, and space to
grow our own produce, as well as
giving us room to learn outside.
An exciting start to 2011, a year
for new developments of all
kinds at Whitbourne.
Editors’ exit
We will be stepping down as editors
as from the end of May and
we hope very much that new editors
will bring their experience
and interest in the community to
the magazine. The role can be
carried out by one person or by a
team (as happens in Clifton) and
we would be pleased to hear
from anyone who would like to
know more about the role and
what it involves.
The magazine is overseen by a
committee, which meets once a
year formally but can meet more
often if necessary, and it relies
on committed volunteers at all
stages of its production and distribution
– even our printers,
CMCS of Droitwich, print it free
of charge for us, which is an
incredibly valuable contribution
and one for which we are very
grateful.
The guidelines for the magazine
can be found on p10 – these give
a broad outline of how we work.
We have very much enjoyed our
time as editors and really appreciated
the insight it has given us
into the communities in this
parish.
We know that there are many
people in this parish who care
deeply about their community
and we thank all those who have
contributed to the magazine in
the last three years.
Letter from the Bishop of Hereford
"Seven days without prayer
makes one weak." Allen E
Vartlett
"We have to pray with our eyes
on God, not on the difficulties."
Oswald Chambers
"He who runs from God in the
morning will scarcely find Him
the rest of the day." John Bunyan
“The Spirit helps us in our weakness.
We do not know what we
ought to pray for, but the Spirit
Himself intercedes for us with
groans that words cannot
express.” Romans 8:26
"Of all the duties enjoined by
Christianity, none is more essential
and yet more neglected than
prayer." Fenelon
Jesus said, “When you pray, say,
‘Our Father…’” St. Luke 11.4
When our Bishop’s Council was
Once upon a time, there was a
very clever spider, who spun a
world-wide web which made anybody
able to catch any fly anywhere.
Then along came an equally
clever, but more ambitious, spider
who said: “ Flies are fine, but
I’d like to try for bigger game;
why not discover the secrets of
the world of butterflies and build
a net that is invisible, but strong
enough to catch and hold them
The Brockhampton Estate is one
of four National Trust properties
in the county looking for volunteers
under the ‘Your time, our
place’ campaign. It will be opening
seven days a week from
March 5 to November 6 this year
for the first time, so volunteers
are urgently needed.
There’s a huge variety of roles
looking again at our diocesan priorities,
we decided that the two
absolutely fundamental areas to
work on are:
“Growing in our personal relationship
with Christ.” and
“Strengthening our confidence to
live and express it.”
Prayer is central to both. That is
why I have begun with a few quotations
to encourage us in our
emphasis on prayer and to
remind us how absolutely fundamental
it is to who we are, as well
as to what we do. As Martin
Luther put it, “As it is the business
of tailors to make clothes
and cobblers to make shoes, so it
is the business of Christians to
pray.” Or, if you prefer, Pope Pius
XII wrote, “A person without
prayer is like a tree without
roots.”
It is essential that we pray and
give time to it, time to God. Once
A fable for Epiphany
till they deliver their secrets?”
So he did this; and the peacocks
and red admirals and painted
ladies and even the monarchs
and purple emperors were then
captive. But they were so furious
that the lashing of their wings
finally broke the net and the
death’s head hawk moth led the
others in crying out for the blood
of this super-spider, who threatened
their very existence.
So the super-spider tried to hide
NT volunteers needed
available from gardeners,
rangers and countryside helpers
to fundraisers, room guides and
events assistants. Hours are flexible.
again, I am calling for Ash
Wednesday (9th March) to be a
Day of Prayer so that we may be
encouraged in the way of prayer
not just in Lent but all the time. I
am referring to it this month so
as to give more time for organizing
“welcomers” and resources in
our churches to help those who
are able to “drop in” for a while
to pray.
Our prayer is needed every day,
in our own homes especially. We
need to pray as we can, not as we
can’t, in the way that suits us, not
someone else. We can learn to
pray from the Bible, from other
people, from books, from quotations,
from sermons, and from
study groups. We learn best, not
by reading about prayer, but by
praying, because the Spirit of
God teaches us.
Bishop Anthony Priddis
Bishop of Hereford
with a friend and to this day the
death’s head gang have not been
able to catch him.
But if and when they do, they and
he will all meet the King of Kings,
who designed and made them all
and put each one in his or her
appointed place. And what do
you think He would say to them?
I.T. Illiterate (name and
address supplied)
Helen Jaundrell, Campaign
Manager, said: “If you’ve got a
few hours to spare we’d love to
have some of your time at our
place. Our volunteers are incredibly
important to us as we simply
couldn’t open the doors without
their superb support, great ideas
and enthusiasm.”
Oil thefts warning
West Mercia Police is urging residents
that use oil to heat their
properties to be extra vigilant
following fuel thefts in the county.
Hundreds of litres of heating
oil have been stolen from tanks
across the county, as well as
Shropshire and Worcestershire.
Sgt David Bishop at Hereford
Police Station said: "While this is
not a large problem, we have
noticed a slight increase in such
crimes in the county. It is possibly
due to the increase in fuel
costs over recent months so they
may become more prevalent
across the country. We are warning
local people who use heating
oil to take precautions against
being targeted by thieves.
"Among other security tips, we
recommend fitting an alarm
which rings if the oil level suddenly
drops or installing security
lights to alert residents when
there are intruders.
"Residents are also urged to keep
any eye out for unusual activity
or vehicles and report anything
suspicious as soon as possible on
0300 333 3000, or ring
Crimestoppers anonymously on
0800 555111. Of course, if you
see a theft in progress, call 999."
Sgt Bishop recommends the following
hints and tips, which can
help reduce the chances of heating
oil being stolen from your
property.
Plant shrubs or install fences to
hide your tank from view. This is
especially important if you live
close to the road - although heating
oil theft has also been known
to occur at secluded properties
with long drives.
Remember to check your tank's
oil levels on a regular basis.
Where possible, install security
lighting that covers your tank
and the immediate surrounding
area.
If your tank is openly accessible
to all, consider re-siting it to an
area or building where it is better
protected.
Be extra vigilant of tankers or
large vehicles close to your property.
Note down any suspicious
vehicles' registration numbers
and report them to the police.
If your tank is located in an outbuilding,
ensure the building is
kept locked and secured at all
times.
Remove any empty containers or
drums from the immediate area -
they could draw attention to the
presence of your oil tank.
Deter thieves from entering your
property by installing and using
lockable gates and by maintaining
boundaries and perimeter
fencing.
Saltmarshe WI party
Saltmarshe ladies had a party
with a difference this year. We
had a Murder Mystery Dinner
Party along the loose lines of
Wuthering Heights entitled
“Murder by Candlelight.”
The year was 1848 when the
whole of Europe was being swept
by a wave of revolution but the
setting was a dark gloomy old
house high on the windswept
moors of Yorkshire where life in
“Withering Depths” had continued
unchanged for centuries.
From left to right: Janet Dallow,
Rachel Whitefoot, Wendy Dullam,
Janet Jellis, Celia Gibbs, Eve Currie,
Jean Spellmen and Linda Marsden.
In order to set the scene the eight
main characters paid a visit to
the Conquest Theatre to hire
suitable costumes from the well
stocked wardrobe department.
The tallest amongst us were designated
as male characters. The
other ladies joined in the spirit of
the evening by dressing up in
Victorian costume.
The play opened with the murder
of the Dowager Lady Withering.
The eight characters were seated
at the dinner table with their own
skeletal scripts necessitating as
much improvisation as they were
able while the story unfolded.
The investigation was carried out
by Yorkshire’s finest detective
Boycott McClue who ran the proceedings
from a tape.
At the end of the excellent three
course dinner provided by
Elaine’s Farm Kitchen, the murderer
was found but to tell more
would be to reveal the secret of
“Murder By Candlelight” and that
would never do. You might like
to have a mystery party of your
own

Ambulance service plans change
West Midlands Ambulance
Service is planning to become a
Foundation Trust. This means
that everyone living in the West
Midlands Region can have a say
in how the Service develops.
Foundation Trusts are still part
of the NHS and they continue to
provide free care to everyone.
Our vision for Foundation Trusts
status revolves around two
words:
Community: ensuring that we
develop our service based on the
views of the people we serve
Quality: delivering more choice,
better facilities and improved
services for our patients
We will still be assessed by the
Care Quality Commission and
also meet the rigorous standards
set down by Monitor, the independent
regulator of NHS
Foundation Trusts. Quality of
Service is now paramount to
being a NHS Foundation Trust,
though excellent financial control
is still very important. NHS
Foundation Trusts are far more
accountable to the communities
that they serve. We are looking
for at least 3,000 people to join
us as a ‘member’. As well as
Celebrate and donate
scrutinising our Governance, our
members will be involved in the
future development of our services.
We commenced our consultation
process on 1st November 2010
and it is scheduled to end on 6th
February 2011. You will find our
consultation document and summary
briefing on our website
The Parish Magazine committee
recently met and agreed these
guidelines for the magazine: The
Editor(s) will strive for a balanced
approach to community issues.
They will seek contributions to
provide as wide a variety of
material from the greater parish
as possible so that all areas and
interests are represented.
It will not include any material
which is blasphemous, defamatory,
or contrary to the interests of
church life. All contributions
which fall within these guidelines
will be welcomed and will be
printed, as far as possible, as
they are submitted.
Parish magazine guidelines
The views expressed by contributors
are their own and do not
represent the position of the PCC
or any other body or person. To
be considered for inclusion, all
contributions must be accompanied
by a name and contact
details – requests for anonymity
will be considered, but will not
be provided automatically.
Editorial content is decided upon
by the Editor(s), with advice from
the Rector when necessary. If
there is any question concerning
the suitability of material for
publication, the issue should be
decided by the Editor(s) and the
Rector; if agreement cannot be
reached through discussion, the
Rector alone has the final sanction.
For practical reasons, the
Editor(s) cannot provide advance
copies.
Advertisement space is intended
for local service providers, retailers
and clubs, and all advertisements
should comply with the
editorial guidelines for the magazine.
The Editor(s) will strive for
a balance between advertising
and editorial, while acknowledging
the revenue implications of
the former.

We’re looking for a bell...
The spare bell at St Mark’s
Our link church in Tanga,
Tanzania, needs a church bell.
They have just renewed the
church roof and now no longer
need umbrellas during the service,
and need a bell to complete
the job. They had a bell once,
which broke. I said I would try to
find one. In the meantime they
Whether Whitbourne’s war
memorial should be insured
against damage and how this
could be achieved was discussed
by Whitbourne parish council in
January. Quotes ranged from
£123 to £235 per year, and the
council agreed to consult
Herefordshire Council to discover
what the situation was elsewhere
in the county.
Councillor Tom Hunt reported
that Herefordshire Council is facing
job cuts – 30 management
have a stand-in bell,pictured
below. (They don’t have Health
& Safety in Tanzania.)
The Keltek Trust (which finds
homes for unwanted bells) located
a spare bell at St. Mark’s in
Watford. When somebody from
the Trust had taken it down we
were going to fetch it. The
Watford church already had links
in Tanga Region and were happy
to let us have it for nothing.
Then I had an email – “I see our
bell has gone. When did you
fetch it?…”.
We haven’t fetched it – it has
been stolen (along with another
15 bells throughout the country
Parish council news
jobs are likely to be cut, along
with 250 other staff, as
Government cuts affect the council’s
income. He said: “ This may
increase. We will freeze the council
tax level for next year at its
current level, but a lot of hard
decisions will have to be made.
We have always protected frontline
services and we will do that
as long as we can.”
Parish councillors agreed that
they would meet Tina Wood from
Herefordshire Council in the
last year, apparently).
If anybody sees this bell looking
lost, please grab it – it’s ours.
Brenda Allan
PS. Keltek say they will try to find
us another one.
St Francis’ current bell
spring to look around the village
for sites for affordable housing
and would like a presentation
from Kemble housing association
on their approach to any new
development in the meantime.
CSO Stephanie Annette reported
on the success of the youth meeting
held before Christmas, and
said that a further event was
planned. The parish council
agreed to fund the hall fees for
that meeting.
Ferndale Singers - men needed!
On 11th December, in Martley,
the Ferndale Singers, under the
baton of their Musical Director,
Merren Anthony, sang a wide
selection of Christmas music
ranging from favourites such as
Jingle Bells to the exuberant
Wassail Song. The enthusiastic
audience was invited to join in
several popular carols and
reached a peak of excellence in
the Twelve Days of Christmas!!
In the interval, the audience was
served with wine and delicious
cake and mince pies. The raffle,
in aid of the Worcestershire
Breast Unit Campaign and the
British Legion Poppy Appeal, was
most generously supported and
raised nearly £300.
For the information of newcomers
to the area, the Ferndale
Singers is a community mixed
choir of 25 voices, which was
formed 24 years ago. The membership
is drawn from the lower
Teme Valley villages, with some
singers coming from further
afield, from Bromyard, Malvern
and Worcester. The choir is seeking
men who can sing Bass or
Tenor parts and would welcome
enquiries. Perhaps this could be
a belated New Year's Resolution!
Murgh makhani with pheasant
Lots of ingredients, but a simple recipe. This also
works very well with chicken or lamb. Serves eight.
170ml double cream
1 tsp freshly ground black pepper
Coriander leaves, to garnish (optional)
In a large bowl, mix together the marinade ingredients,
add the pheasant joints, turn over with your
marinate overnight in the fridge.
Put all the ingredients for the sauce in a large pan
and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer
gently for 20 minutes, stirring regularly, until nicely
thickened. Rub through a sieve and set to one
side.
Heat the oven to 230C/450F/gas mark 8. Transfer
the pheasant legs to a roasting tin, along with some
of the marinade, cover with a piece of buttered foil
and roast for 15 minutes.
Add the breasts to the tin, give everything a good
stir, lower the heat to 200C/400F/gas mark 6 and
cook for 20 minutes.
To complete the sauce, melt the butter in a large
pan, add the ground cumin and sizzle gently for a
minute. Add the tomato sauce, bring back to a simmer
and cook for five minutes. Add the tomato
purée, honey, cream, fenugreek, lime juice and
black pepper, and simmer gently, stirring occasionally,
for five minutes, until the sauce is thick,
rich and creamy. Finally, add the pheasant, mix
well and warm through, simmering gently for five
minutes.
Serve with basmati rice and scatter with coriander
leaves, if using.
Moving On
Well, Christmas is over, New Year too
We can now settle down
Back to basics, that’s true
We had a white Christmas
That every child wishes for
But it did cause some problems
So we don’t want any more
We will now look forward
To a fresh and bright spring
And cheer ourselves up
When we hear the birds sing
Waiting for the primroses and daffodils to
grow
When the air is a little warmer
To give us all a glow
Spring is a beautiful time of year
A new beginning of hope and good cheer.
stained glass, wall paintings and memorials from Anglo-Saxon times to the present day. The
course, comprising 6 afternoon lectures and a field day, is a follow-up to the very popular churches
course held two years ago, but will nevertheless be equally suitable for newcomers.
Lectures will be on Wednesdays from 2pm to 4pm.
For more details, dates etc please contact Jennifer Weale on 01886 821368.
Cost: £38 for 6 lectures plus Tim's expert guidance on the field day,
but does not include the cost of a possible coach.
