From the Rector“He came to Nazareth, where he hadbeen brought up.” (Luke 4:16)Imagine that you are a stand-upcomedian about to entertain anexpectant crowd. You have beenhoning your craft for years. Every setyou performed was subject to closeself-scrutiny, as you examined whatworked, what did not, and why. Nevermind the difficulty of coming up withhumorous observations in the firstplace – your task now is to make thesejokes that you have said hundreds oftimes seem fresh and new for thepeople in front of you. Now imaginecoming to the end of your set.Silence.As an experienced comedian, youknow that it is not the material that isto blame. The jokes work. You work.Fortunately you have an explanationfor your failure to connect with theaudience. When your fellow stand-upsask you how it went, you will have aready answer. “Tough crowd,” you willsay, shaking your head, “toughcrowd.”When Jesus went to teach in thesynagogue of his home town he got tospeak to the best audience imaginable. These were not surly strangers withtheir arms crossed. They were familyand friends, eager to hear what he hadto say. There is no escaping the fact thatbooks, scrolls and carefulinterpretation of the texts have alwaysbeen at the heart of the way of thepeople of God. Ours is a wordyreligion! The event preserved in Luke4 is a seminal moment for Christianhistory, not because Jesus signalled abreak from the old Hebrew scripturesbut because he did the opposite. Fromthis point onwards, the ability todemonstrate a responsible and sinceredevotion to the holy scriptures was amark, perhaps the mark, of thelegitimacy of the movement of Christfollowers.“Today this scripture has beenfulfilled in your hearing.”Jesus proclaimed he was the one tofree the oppressed and the crowdloved it. Luke says, “All spoke well ofhim and were amazed at the graciouswords that came from his mouth.”Jesus was the home-town boy madegood, putting his stamp on a passagepopular with a crowd who, living inRoman-occupied Palestine, identifiedwith the poor, the incapacitated, theoppressed. Isaiah was talking aboutthem. They were the opposite of atough crowd.Which is why Jesus knew they had notgot it.Contrary to the instinct common topublic speakers everywhere, Jesusthen set about turning the roomagainst him. Drawing from thescriptures, Jesus points out that, forGod, the “oppressed poor” are not3 October 2013

necessarily those on the inside of thewordy-religious group. Instead, theyare idol-worshipping outcasts like thewidow of Zarephath (4:26). They arenot even always physically poor orpolitically weak – Naaman the Syrian(4:27) was a ruling member of aforeign power. For Jesus, what makesthese people “poor” and “oppressed”is not only their social status, it is thereality and their awareness of theirabsolute dependence on God.Ultimately it was Jesus' adherence toscripture and his insistence that thesepromises were made to more thanjust the people in the room thatoffended the crowd. Jesus' sermonkeeps the poor in view – God isdefinitely and absolutely for them. But he expands the circle of who“they” are.Let us continue to proclaim the Lord'sfavour to all crowds, even, perhapsespecially, the tough ones.Harvest Festival AppealWe are supporting our local FoodBanks and we need your help! Club, please contact Ann Roberts(01886-821063) or Eileen Badger(01886 821501).Saltmarshe & District W.I.Our September meeting took on awatery theme, as our Speaker for theevening was Mr. Paul Betterton, whocame to enlighten us on the Mysteriesof the Titanic. In the 1950s, as ayoung lad, he'd been to see the film"A Night to Remember" which starredKenneth More. Only as he grewolder did he come to realise that thiswas a true story. When he became anengineer this gave him a further levelof understanding and finding outmore became his full time passion. Heled us through the rivalry that existedbetween the Cunard and White StarShipping Lines to win the Blue Ribbonaward for the fastest Transatlanticpassenger ship crossing. In the early1900s those passengers not in FirstClass had to make do with sleepingby holding onto ropes slung acrossthe width of the ship; there being noproper beds, and this on voyageswhich took six weeks. The aim ofTitanic and her sister ships, Olympicand Britannic, was to provide equalfacilities for all three classes, but notof course equal levels of luxury!Despite signals from other shipsabout the presence of icebergs, theTitanic hit one at 11.40pm just fourdays into her maiden voyage. Theship sank at 2.20am on the 15th April1912 with the loss of approximately1500 persons, the majority beingcrew and Third Class passengers.Subsequent inquiries in America andBritain led to specific safetyprocedures still in use today. After our tea interval we got down tothe Business part of the eveningduring which we continued the themeof water with a report of our July tripto Shrewsbury. In contrast to theiceberg and Titanic, we were quitesafe on the River Severn atShrewsbury, in glorious sunshine, ona forty-minute boat ride on the goodship Sabrina. We made a specialmention of Linda, who'd organisedthat whole day so well, then we wenton to congratulate our Treasurer formaking page three of the Septembernewsletter, sent to all HerefordshireW.I.sWe'd arrived in rain and left for homestill in rain; which in view of ourevening's topics seemed mostappropriate. Whitbourne W.I.Well, it seems a long time since wemet in the small hall in June as ourJuly meeting was in a beautifulgarden and there was no Augustmeeting. Fifteen of us met at the Liveand Let Live and had a very goodmeal. The weather is changing and it’sfeeling a bit colder in the evening, buttonight is fine, but cold, so we arehoping for a quick business meetingas usual. Many welcomed us after theholidays and began with birthdayposies. Next year’s programmefeaturing plenty of outings, demonstrations and council meetingswas read out. Secret Santa alsoreared his head ready for theChristmas Party where there will alsobe entertainment.Rachel, our speaker for the evening, was from the College for the Blind. The RNCB was founded in 1892 andprogressed from match selling toShrewsbury and Hereford in the1970s. When their Victorian buildingwas bought by Hereford College, theymoved over the road to a purposebuilt building. The College caters forall age groups and teaches a widerange of subjects. All students areencouraged to be as independent aspossible. Rachel showed us a gadgetto put on the side of a cup to assessthe level of liquid in a cup whichbuzzes when a safe level is reached.Braille is still taught as it is stillnecessary for them to learn it if theirfinger tips are sensitive enough. Lotsof fundraising takes place to fund thestudents who come from all over theUK as well as overseas. Studentsfrom abroad are self-funded. Eachstudent has an timetable designed fortheir individual needs as they oftenhave other disabilities as well asimpaired sight. Guide dogs are withthe students at all times so thebedrooms are big enough toaccommodate a dog. Two thirds ofthe students succeed in getting jobs.Heather gave the vote of thanks forsuch an interesting talk. We then hadrefreshments and a sociable chat.Next meeting is on October 8th —’Owls’. Linda GreyClifton upon Teme W.I.The summer has been very busy forthe WI; we attended the Clifton Horseand Dog Show in August where Bethand her wonderful team of ladiesprovided the refreshments for theoccasion. Our meeting this month was wellattendedand our speaker was DavidBarry, a professional wine taster, whose subject was ‘Confessions of awine taster’. David took us throughhis life’s work, reminding us of pastdrinks and prices – who remembersdrinking a Babycham? David alsotasted spirits such as gin andexplained the herbs that go intomaking it; he explained that it wasn’tonly tasting but rubbing the drinksinto your hand and smelling it.The talk was rounded off with a winetasting of both red and white wines, the part we had been waiting for. Weused our new-found knowledge to trythe wines and also to enjoy them.If you would like to come along to theWI, new members and visitors aremost welcome. Our next meeting in6 October 2013

Sheila HarrisLetter from the Dean ofHerefordChoosing a new BishopBishops are in the news at themoment! Last month, we saidgoodbye to Bishop Anthony and heand Kathy very much continue in ourthoughts and prayers. Now theprocess really begins to find asuccessor to Bishop Anthony. Thismonth, we welcome to the diocese thetwo secretaries – Archbishops’ andPrime Minister’s – from London andthey will be conducting a whole seriesof interviews based in Hereford andLudlow – clergy, supportministers, churchwardens, clergyspouses, leaders of the civic andcommercial communities and manymore. In this way, we hope that asmany people as possible will feelconsulted and be enabled to expresstheir own views. Everybody can havetheir say – there is a public meetingon Tuesday 8 October at 7.00pm atthe Ludlow Mascall Centre – and atthis, all will be able to meet thesecretaries, put their views and meetthe six members of the diocesanvacancy-in-see committee who willhave been elected the day before tothe Crown Nominations Commission– the group which eventuallyinterviews candidates for thepost. So please, do put this date andtime in your diary if you’d like to bepart of this consultation. Rememberthat our bishop is bishop of thewhole diocese, and has a care for all –so we want to hear from as manydifferent constituencies as possible. The process to find a new bishop isessentially placed in a context ofprayer – prayer that God will helpthose who will choose – prayer thatGod will inspire the right person torespond – prayer that we will all begiven grace to work together with thenew bishop to promote God’skingdom in homes, churches andwhere we work. One thing is certain – judging fromthe long list of ‘qualities needed in anew bishop’ the new man is going toneed our support and understandingand reserves of God’s grace. Howgood it is that this process ishappening in October – the month ofHereford’s own saint, Thomas ofHereford. He was bishop 1275-82and while we remember him for hislearning and pastoral zeal, we alsoremember him as one who sufferedfor what he believed to be right.May that spirit of self-giving be at theheart of all our leaders – and may itbe at the heart of our own Christianwitness and ministry as each of usstrives to follow these qualities whichwe see supremely in our Master andSaviour, Jesus Christ. Michael TavinorDean of Hereford and Chair of theVacancy-in-See Committee.7 October 2013
