Dear Friends, As the year ends and we deliver our 2011 audit to the Board of Directors, we are very grateful to the Board, staff and volunteers, and to our donors because your support is the source of our success. We count on everyone who contributes in the way and at the level they can afford — whether it is time and talent, donations or even prayers. We know you are giving us everything you can, and for that we are grateful. In these uncertain economic times, it is difficult to provide the services we know the community really needs. We continue to strive to lift people out of poverty, strengthen the way their families communicate and share their burdens. The result, as this year’s Annual Report theme states, is that we are Growing Stronger Together. As a comprehensive family agency, we attempt to meet people where they are and help to move them forward to secure what they need. We provide limited material assistance, including food, help with utilities and clothing for warmth. These direct efforts are supported by parishes and donors who specifically prefer to fulfill these types of material needs. If you are one of these supporters, we want you to know this kind of giving is very important to us. But we also want, to paraphrase a familiar proverb, to “teach people to fish” rather than just give them a fish, so they learn how to do more for themselves. We work to teach them to be self sufficient and provide financial coaching so they can chart their own progress. For an immigrant resident, self sufficiency may mean learning English or getting a basic education. For a child, it may be homework help, tutoring or counseling to overcome their fears or grief. Families experiencing marital problems or substance abuse, or who are caring for an aging parent all benefit from the support and quality professional counseling we provide. Whatever their issue, most people who struggle, also struggle economically. Paying for supportive services necessarily becomes secondary to managing the expenses of everyday living, like food, rent and medicine. This is when government and United Way grants are so critical, because they let us help those living on the margins. They allow us to offer more to so many people. We provide this help in the name of the Church and with all tenets of Catholic social teaching at the forefront of our work: respect for individual dignity, care and compassion for those who are in pain and a belief that whomever we meet, in whatever state they may be, we will offer them our best, regardless of race, religious affiliation or economic status. God’s love is meant for all. We thank our Board members, who this year put their shoulders to the wheel, helping us to analyze how well we are living up to our own ideals, and whether we are serving as efficiently and as effectively as possible. We are also so very grateful for our staff members who are always willing to put in extra work, and to our funders who generously explore all avenues to provide us with extra resources. But most of all, for you our donors — without whom we would not have the match money needed to meet grant requirements or the funds to help a special child or struggling family.
