Dear Friends,
As the year ends and we deliver our 2011 audit to the Board of Directors, we are very grateful
to the Board, staff and volunteers, and to our donors because your support is the source of our
success. We count on everyone who contributes in the way and at the level they can afford —
whether it is time and talent, donations or even prayers. We know you are giving us everything you
can, and for that we are grateful.
In these uncertain economic times, it is difficult to provide the services we know the community
really needs. We continue to strive to lift people out of poverty, strengthen the way their families
communicate and share their burdens. The result, as this year’s Annual Report theme states, is that
we are Growing Stronger Together.
As a comprehensive family agency, we attempt to meet people where they are and help to move
them forward to secure what they need. We provide limited material assistance, including food, help
with utilities and clothing for warmth. These direct efforts are supported by parishes and donors
who specifically prefer to fulfill these types of material needs. If you are one of these supporters, we
want you to know this kind of giving is very important to us.
But we also want, to paraphrase a familiar proverb, to “teach people to fish” rather than just give
them a fish, so they learn how to do more for themselves. We work to teach them to be self sufficient
and provide financial coaching so they can chart their own progress. For an immigrant resident, self
sufficiency may mean learning English or getting a basic education. For a child, it may be homework
help, tutoring or counseling to overcome their fears or grief. Families experiencing marital problems
or substance abuse, or who are caring for an aging parent all benefit from the support and quality
professional counseling we provide.
Whatever their issue, most people who struggle, also struggle economically. Paying for
supportive services necessarily becomes secondary to managing the expenses of everyday living, like
food, rent and medicine. This is when government and United Way grants are so critical, because
they let us help those living on the margins. They allow us to offer more to so many people. We
provide this help in the name of the Church and with all tenets of Catholic social teaching at the
forefront of our work: respect for individual dignity, care and compassion for those who are in pain
and a belief that whomever we meet, in whatever state they may be, we will offer them our best,
regardless of race, religious affiliation or economic status. God’s love is meant for all.
We thank our Board members, who this year put their shoulders to the wheel, helping us to
analyze how well we are living up to our own ideals, and whether we are serving as efficiently and
as effectively as possible. We are also so very grateful for our staff members who are always willing
to put in extra work, and to our funders who generously explore all avenues to provide us with extra
resources. But most of all, for you our donors — without whom we would not have the match money
needed to meet grant requirements or the funds to help a special child or struggling family. We are
humbly proud of our efforts and indebted to you for making them possible.
Thank you all, and, once again, God bless!
Family Counseling Services
… Helping People Overcome Barriers to Achieving Emotional and Economic Independence.
Services offered Who we help What we provide Mike* was a very sad 10-year-old when he came
to Family Counseling. He often cried, had
Counseling • Children Help in dealing with the transitions
• Adolescents in life that can be so difficult,
nightmares and did not like to be left alone.
• Adults including:
His sorrow came from losing his beloved grandma,
• Older adults • Alcohol and substance abuse who died when Mike was 6. His dad said: “He just
• Families • Anger management
• Couples • Anxiety and stress
never seemed to get over her death. They were best
• Changes due to health and aging buds since he was little. She used to babysit for him,
• Child and teen behavior issues and even when she got really sick with cancer, he would
• Depression
• Grief and loss
stay near her and just hold her hand. Her death was
• Job loss
really hard on him.”
• Marriage and relationship issues Afraid that others he loved might die too, he often
• Parenting/family conflict
• Trauma
checked on how they were feeling.
Mike’s counselor not only understood how children
react to the death of a loved one, but how traumatic
those deaths can be. She provided a safe place where he could talk about his
grandma and how hard it was for him to see her die. As part of the process,
the counselor helped Mike create a memory box where he could keep all the
good mementos he had of her.
With time, Mike’s nightmares faded away and he was able to talk about
his grandma without crying. He was finally able to share with others the
happiness she gave him. Mike joyfully said: “I made a new friend last week.
I told him all about my grandma and showed him my grandma box. He
really wishes he could have met her.”
Family Education & Support Services
… Teaching Families Skills that Strengthen Communication and Relationships,
Because Strong Families Protect Children and Teach Them Self Sufficiency.
The Smiths* were a family in crisis. These new parents didn’t
know what to expect of or how to react to their 2-yearold
daughter. Adding to the stress was the father’s recent
unemployment.
Child Protective Services referred the family to our Family
Education and Support Services’ Life Skills Program. In June 2011,
we assessed the family and found them to be in crisis regarding
both parenting skills and employment retention skills.
Six months of participating in our Parent Coaching and
Conflict Resolution Skills training has resulted in a much brighter
picture for this young family. The father has found gainful
employment, allowing him to provide appropriate housing,
transportation and food for his wife and daughter.
Both parents agree that the parent coaching services greatly
increased their understanding of child development. The program also taught them how to utilize parenting
strategies, including setting consistent limits and expectations, as well as demonstrating positive and negative
consequences of behaviors. They not only realize the importance of playing with their daughter, reading to her
and praising her, but they look forward to it.
As a result of participating in our Life Skills Program, the Smiths are now a close, warm, self-sufficient family.
… Protecting Children by Providing Services
to Ensure They Are in Stable, Nurturing Homes.
After raising eight children to successful adulthood, most parents would utter a sigh of
relief and slip into the comfortable roles of grandparent and retiree. Not true of Shirley
and Robert Selby. At ages 63 and 71, respectively, they were ready to begin again by
adopting, with the help of SFFC, a new family of five children ranging in age from 2 to 14.
When the Selbys’ great nieces and nephews Malik, Celicia, Tionna, Lavida and Anthony
entered foster care, Mr. and Mrs. Selby knew they needed to take care of these wonderful
children. They’d had a close relationship with the children and their mother before she died.
The Selbys did not want to see the children separated after suffering the loss of their mother.
Family love and support is the cornerstone of the Selbys’ existence.
They speak with each of their adult children daily and visit with
them weekly. Their biological children believe their mother “was
put on this earth to raise children.” In addition to raising their
own family, over the years the Selbys have opened their hearts
and home to other family members and friends in need.
Prepared and unfazed by the challenge of raising five
young children, Mr. and Mrs. Selby know they have the
love, compassion and experience needed to embrace this
new family and are committed to each of them forever.
Hispanic Outreach Program
… Helping Hispanic Families Become
Educated, Engaged Members of the Community.
What would inspire a mother who has lived in the United States for ten years
to finally become a citizen? The desire to motivate her children, of course.
Maria* wanted her children, ages 13, 10 and 3, to be good Americans and
good students. The best way to encourage them, she decided, was to set a good
example, and join her husband and children as citizens. For the past three years,
the CSSOC Hispanic Outreach Program has helped her every step of the way.
First, Maria enrolled in the English as a Second Language (ESL) class offered
through our Hispanic Outreach Program. After passing
the ESL class, she began studying for her citizenship
test by attending our weekly citizenship classes.
In May 2011, with her proud husband
and children watching, Maria took her
citizenship oath.
But she’s not done setting that good
example yet. To further enrich her life
and strengthen her family, Maria is
now studying to get her GED. Where
else would she go but to our Hispanic
the center in our safe shower that is equipped with seats and handrails. Martha
is very happy with the shower service and feels the personal care staff has
Most recently, Hank’s increased needs have made it more difficult for
Martha to transport him. So now they use our convenient bus service, with
Sheltering Arms once again making the life of a caregiver a little bit easier.
As the population ages, a frequently asked question
is: Who cares for the caregivers? As we live longer,
there are more and more people with disabilities.
Compassionate family caregivers go to great lengths and
make many personal sacrifices to keep parents, spouses and
sometimes a child, out of residential facilities.
Martha and Hank* live in a senior community. But Hank
could not be safely left alone. Martha found she really
needed time for herself for doctor appointments, support
groups, to socialize or just to be alone.
She brought Hank to Sheltering Arms to give herself
some respite from his care. At first, he was hesitant to
attend and complained. However, Hank grew to enjoy it. As
Martha increased his days in the program, he became more
social and active. He became supportive of his peers and
now encourages others to attend.
Older Adult Volunteer Programs
… Keeping Older Adults Engaged in the Community Through Helping the Younger Generations.
As a member of the Foster Grandparent Program of Oakland
County for the past 12 years, when Johnella Richardson
sees a need, she jumps right in to help.
While visiting a local school, she saw two girls arguing
while waiting to report to the principal for detention. “There’s
just not enough love in here!” Johnella said as she stopped the
altercation.
With those words in mind, Johnella later created the L.O.V.E.
Club, an acronym for Ladies of Vision and Elegance, for 5 th grade
girls. The girls are referred by their teachers as those most in
need of personalized attention because of ongoing inappropriate
classroom behavior.
Every Monday “Granny,” as Johnella is affectionately known,
and the girls eat lunch together because most of them come to
school hungry.
“The main goal of the Club is to show the children
Johnella. Activities include poetry writing and discussions about personal hygiene, culture, arts and crafts, books
and current events. The Club is now 10 years old and has ten members.
Three years ago, Johnella realized there also were boys in need of her compassionate support, so she started
the ABC Club (Alcott Boys Club), which now has ten 5 th grade members.
Young people need help to become productive adults, but there is a lack of mentoring programs for them.
“For many, the Clubs are merely a first step in that positive direction,” said Johnella.
