Stages <strong>in</strong> <strong>Essay</strong> Writ<strong>in</strong>g<br />
• Research + ideas.<br />
• Outl<strong>in</strong>e<br />
• Iterative writ<strong>in</strong>g process<br />
• Introduction <strong>an</strong>d conclusion<br />
• References<br />
• Improve the English.<br />
Research<br />
• First look at some <strong>in</strong>troduc<strong>to</strong>ry articles, for<br />
example on Wikipedia.<br />
• Then start <strong>to</strong> follow up l<strong>in</strong>ks <strong>an</strong>d look up<br />
<strong>an</strong>y technical terms that you do not<br />
underst<strong>an</strong>d.<br />
• This research should turn up some more<br />
<strong>in</strong> depth articles that are worth read<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

Research – Multiple Sources<br />
• Don’t just use Wikipedia – draw on a<br />
variety of sources.<br />
• Not everyth<strong>in</strong>g that you read onl<strong>in</strong>e is true!<br />
• Try <strong>to</strong> evaluate the reliability of different<br />
sites <strong>an</strong>d their potential biases.<br />
• For example, <strong>an</strong> onl<strong>in</strong>e version of a<br />
newspaper is likely <strong>to</strong> be more reliable<br />
th<strong>an</strong> a blog.<br />
Research - Reliability<br />
• If you are cit<strong>in</strong>g someth<strong>in</strong>g as a fact, try <strong>to</strong><br />
see if it is confirmed by more th<strong>an</strong> one<br />
website.<br />
• Be aware that websites often copy content<br />
from each other – so see if the <strong>in</strong>formation<br />
is phrased differently on different sites.<br />
• Keep a careful note of all of your sources -<br />
you will need <strong>to</strong> refer <strong>to</strong> them later <strong>an</strong>d cite<br />
them at the end of the essay.<br />

Research<br />
• A well-researched article should draw on<br />
material from books <strong>an</strong>d officially<br />
published papers.<br />
• <strong>How</strong>ever, for this assignment just websites<br />
is ok.<br />
Ideas<br />
• As you research the <strong>to</strong>pic write down<br />
ideas about what you will <strong>in</strong>clude <strong>in</strong> the<br />
essay.<br />
• This c<strong>an</strong> <strong>in</strong>clude short notes, quotations,<br />
statistics etc.<br />
• These will be extremely useful when you<br />
actually come <strong>to</strong> write the essay.<br />

David Gamez IUA Week 4 Autumn 2007<br />
Outl<strong>in</strong>e<br />
• When you have done most of your<br />
research <strong>an</strong>d have a decent number of<br />
ideas, it is time <strong>to</strong> start pl<strong>an</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
• Every essay has <strong>an</strong> <strong>in</strong>troduction, a<br />
conclusion <strong>an</strong>d a references section.<br />
• The difficult th<strong>in</strong>g is what goes <strong>in</strong> between!<br />
• Pl<strong>an</strong> this middle part first <strong>an</strong>d the rest will<br />
fall <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> place.<br />
David Gamez IUA Week 4 Autumn 2007<br />
Outl<strong>in</strong>e<br />
• I work by writ<strong>in</strong>g down a list of paragraph<br />
<strong>to</strong>pics.<br />
• I then ch<strong>an</strong>ge their order <strong>an</strong>d edit them <strong>to</strong><br />
give a list of the paragraphs that will form<br />
the ma<strong>in</strong> section.<br />
• It is easier if you do this <strong>in</strong> capitals<br />
• I then paste all my ideas <strong>an</strong>d quotations<br />
<strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> the appropriate paragraphs.<br />
• And the bulk of the essay is almost done.<br />
David Gamez IUA Week 4 Autumn 2007<br />
2
Outl<strong>in</strong>e Example<br />
• PARAGRAPH 1 IS ABOUT …<br />
– Idea 3<br />
– Idea 7<br />
– Quotation 21<br />
• PARAGRAPH 2 IS ABOUT …<br />
– Idea 55<br />
– Statistic 34<br />
• PARAGRAPH 3 IS ABOUT …<br />
– Quotation 1200<br />
Iterative Writ<strong>in</strong>g Process<br />
• As you research, you write down ideas.<br />
• As you write the essay, you need <strong>to</strong> do<br />
more research.<br />
• Move back <strong>an</strong>d forth between the two until<br />
the essay is done.<br />
• Make sure that each paragraph relates <strong>to</strong><br />
the others <strong>an</strong>d that the ma<strong>in</strong> section tells a<br />
coherent s<strong>to</strong>ry.<br />

Introduction <strong>an</strong>d Conclusion<br />
• Tidy up the ma<strong>in</strong> section <strong>an</strong>d make sure<br />
that it is readable.<br />
• When the ma<strong>in</strong> section is almost<br />
complete, write <strong>an</strong> <strong>in</strong>troduction expla<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
what the essay is about.<br />
• <strong>Write</strong> a conclusion summaris<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
results of the essay.<br />
• Add the references section.<br />
References<br />
• You must reference all of your sources <strong>in</strong><br />
a section titled “References” at the end of<br />
the essay.<br />
• Use [1], [2] etc. <strong>to</strong> <strong>in</strong>dicate the reference <strong>in</strong><br />
the text.<br />
• List all of your references <strong>in</strong> alphabetical<br />
order at the end of the essay <strong>in</strong> a section<br />
