the LPGA Corning Classic
I’m pleased, on behalf of the Corning Classic Board of Directors, to welcome
you to our 31st LPGA Corning Classic. More than that I, and all 2000 volunteers,
wish you the very best for 2009, and thank you for your continuing support of the
Tournament.
That said, we all know the difficult economic times that have mushroomed all
across the economy since last May and that those conditions can be expected to last
through this year and beyond. But that diminishes neither our optimism nor our plans
to bring some of the world’s best women golfers to our area to kick off this region’s
important tourist season.
For the record, the LPGA Corning Classic has a contract with the LPGA through
this year with an option -- ours to exercise -- for 2010. In the meantime, with the
backing and support of our major sponsors, we will work with the LPGA to negotiate
another three-year contract. That has been our practice since we started...operating
with multi-year contracts with our partners -- the LPGA and the Corning Country Club.
Those negotiations include new multi-year television pacts as well.
We’re proud of our performance over the years as the longest-running LPGA
tournament in terms of major sponsor, Corning Incorporated, venue, Corning Country
Club, and title -- The LPGA Corning Classic.
We are also both proud and grateful for our outstanding volunteers -- some
2,000 strong -- who make it possible to stage this world-class sports event in our
beautiful Finger Lakes/Twin Tiers region. We appreciate and salute the many sponsors,
advertisers and patrons who are key to our success in raising funds for this program’s
beneficiaries.
We are also proud of and grateful to you, the fans who make up our galleries,
because you represent a major component in this tournament’s ability to raise funds for
our hospitals, service clubs and other beneficiaries.
Building a better community.
Welliver McGuire doesn’t just build structures. We build
communities. In addition to the many schools and hospital
buildings Welliver McGuire has partnered to construct, each year our
employees average over 6,000 hours of community service in our towns. In an effort to
build a better future every day for our communities, we support a variety of organizations
and projects that inspire and enrich us all. We are proud of our involvement and privileged
to support charities like the LPGA Corning Classic.
May, 2009
On behalf of Corning Incorporated, I am proud to welcome you to this 31st LPGA Corning Classic. While my
pride is based on our company’s commitment to this event, it’s also based on what the LPGA Corning Classic
does for our community.
May, 2008
This event’s primary purpose has always been to raise funds for the hospitals in our Twin Tiers region. Money
from the Classic funds women’s health educational programs, health screening programs, and buys diagnostic
and treatment equipment. In this program is a story about one hospital’s use of Classic money in a community
outreach for women. Another story describes the commitment and partnership of another hospital by
substantially increasing the number of their employees and associates who volunteer at the Classic.
On behalf of Corning Incorporated, our tournament’s title sponsor, I welcome all the players and
fans to this milestone 30 th LPGA Corning Classic. Our company is proud of its part in this event’s
success and longevity. We share that pride with all our fellow sponsors, patrons, advertisers,
tournament organizers, volunteers and, of course, the players and officials of the LPGA.
Classic funds are also a major support for the summer Camp STAR program for handicapped children conducted
by the Southern Tier Area Rotary clubs at nearby Watson Homestead. Other Classic funds are used by the local
Lions Club in its eye care programs.
The LPGA Corning Classic has been an outstanding example of community partnership. The
involvement and commitment that is required for a community of this size to achieve its distinction
of longevity on the LPGA Tour calendar is unprecedented.
This tournament also funds The First Tee program. More than a way for youngsters to learn to play golf, it’s a
program that teaches life skills in general. Also, the George Douglas Scholarship Fund, fully endowed by the
Classic, provides a $5,000 scholarship each year to a deserving high school graduate chosen from among the
school districts within the area served by our 11 beneficiary hospitals.
While I hope you enjoy the tournament as it unfolds over the Memorial Day weekend, I also
hope you will make note of the many attractions of our beautiful and friendly Chemung Valley
and Southern Finger Lakes area and that you’ll come back again to explore the area and its
attractions further.
Of no less importance is the impact the LPGA Corning Classic has on our whole Twin Tiers area. As a kick-off
to the tourist season for our Finger Lakes wine country and the many beautiful parks and recreational areas, the
Classic infuses $19-$22 million into the local economy.
Sincerely,
Having listed the benefits from this tournament, I’m sure you can understand why I say I’m proud of this
tournament, of the thousands who make it possible and, of course, Corning Incorporated. And this is why,
on behalf of all these people, I bid you welcome and thanks for coming.
2009 LPGA Corning Classic
2009 LPGA Corning Classic
It did not come easily. Lindley’s first-
especially with that left pin. That’s a tough
round 73 (+1) didn’t get her on the leader
driving hole as it is; the fairway kicks to the
board. Friday’s 67 followed by a 70 on Sat-
right, and if you hug too far left, you get
urday fueled a charge that had her tied for
caught up in the rough. I was down the right
third and put her firmly in the next-to-last
side the first time around but I didn’t hit it
twosome on Sunday with Katherine Hull at
quite as good (this) time which was prob-
-6. They played ahead of Jeong Jang and Er-
ably a good thing. It was a little short, so I
ica Blasberg, tied at -7. As it played out, both
had one more club than in regulation and
Blasberg and Hull dropped out of conten-
hit a 7 iron in.”
tion early and the lead became a battle between
Lindley and Jang.
Lindley watched Jang play her second shot
and saw it go into the bunker. Lindley said
Jang jumped out to an early lead with two
she told herself to take dead aim and go
Leta Lindley – CHAMPION
2008 LPGA Corning Classic -Mike Kohberger
Leta Lindley – Champion
2008 LPGA Corning Classic
It was worth the chase...and the wait. That pretty much sums up
Leta Lindley’s feelings as the 14-year LPGA veteran and mother of two earned
her first LPGA title by winning the 30th LPGA Corning Classic. The win came
in her 195th start as an LPGA pro. That tied Missie McGeorge’s record
as the third-longest time on Tour before chalking up a first win.
birdies and an eagle to reach -11 after 8,
then bogeyed 9. Lindley’s two birdies and
a bogey on the front nine put her at -7 at
the turn. Jang added only one more birdie
on the back side, while Lindley birdied the
first three holes and tacked on another at
17 to pull even with one to go. Both players
played the 18th even to earn a suddendeath
do-over on 18.
Jang’s errant tee shot went left into the trees.
Her second shot landed in a green-side
bunker, but she made a beautiful recovery
by blasting to within inches of the hole for
a sure par. Lindley, on in two, had a six-foot
putt that looked even longer after Jang’s
sand shot. It’s called “sudden death” and
that’s what Lindley made it as her six-footer
found the bottom of the cup to make Jang’s
apparent “gimme” moot.
Asked by the media to recap that extra hole,
Lindley said: “Well I drew Number 2 out of
the hat which I actually was happy about.
(When) J.J. hit it down the left side, I knew
she was probably going to have tree trouble,
right at it. She said she concentrated during
her sessions on the range when she
practiced with a stick down her target line.
“I told myself to hit it ‘just like you do on the
range’... and I flagged it.” She said it was one
of the best shots of the day and as she approached
the green, she felt she had given
herself a chance. But my husband told me,
“She’s going to get it up and down...you have
to expect she will...just like you do in match
play...you always expect your opponent to
make it.”
When Lindley saw the bunker shot, she
decided she didn’t want to play another
hole, that she wanted to end it right there
because she might not get another chance.
Reading the putt with Matt, they had it
about a ball and a half to two balls outside
the left edge. They read it right. In her media
conference, an exuberant Lindley said, “I am
thrilled. I dreamed about this day for over 13
years, and, gosh, for awhile you kind of wonder
if it’s ever going to come.” Lindley said
she couldn’t believe it when the winning
putt dropped. She said she was “absolutely
CHECKING IT OUT – “Put the ball in the hole and all
the people will cheer. That’s what happened when
Mommy did it.” That could be what Reese is telling
her brother, Cole, on the 18th green. -Tom Stantz
SCOREBOARD VOLUNTEERS’ SALUTE -Chris Wiggins
AT LAST! – Leta Lindley savors the moment
14 years in coming as she wins her first
LPGA tournament. -Richard Bauman
thrilled. I can’t believe I’m living this experience.”
If she needed any “pinching” to realize
it was real, it came on the 18th green as
she collected the $225,000 winner’s check,
the Steuben Champion’s bowl, a Rolex First
Time Winner’s watch (the ninth to be awarded
at our tournament), and the traditional
bouquet of roses. An added perk was an
all-inclusive stay for two at a Canyon Ranch
resort...where she and her caddie husband
will enjoy rounds of golf with no six-foot
pressure putts.
FROM THIS... – Lying two, Jeong Jang blasts out of the bunker on 18, the first sudden-death
playoff hole looking to extend the tournament at least one more hole. -Chris Wiggins
For a few moments, it appeared our seventh
sudden-death playoff would be extended
at least to a second hole when Jang’s
bunker shot had her lying just three inches
from the cup while Leta Lindley, lying two,
was looking at a six-foot birdie putt that, for
all the world, was looking even longer after
Jang’s explosive sand save. All Jang could do
was watch as Lindley rolled her ball into the
cup for a birdie to snatch the title for herself.
Looking back on her final round, Jang said
that despite trying hard all day, she had trouble
leaving her putts short. Sounding a bit
1 PLACE TO GET IT >
like a Yogi Berra disciple, she told the media
in her post-tourney interview, “I just putted
...TO THIS – Out of the bunker to within inches for a virtual “gimme” putt for par and a second playoff
hole. Not. Leta Lindley sank her six-foot birdie putt making this one so close and yet so far. -Chris Wiggins
Jeong Jang
Looking back on her playoff hole, she and
most of the other folks on hand felt pretty
sure that the putt she had left would not be
Lindley’s six-foot putt was not short...
it was right on target.
Second Place – 2008 LPGA Corning Classic
Welcomes the 2009 LPGA Corning Classic
JEONG JANG - SECOND PLACE
2008 LPGA Corning Classic -Richard Bauman
Jeong Jang’s eighth appearance at the
LPGA Corning Classic was by far her
most profitable as her 2008 second
place check for $138,335 was nearly
twice her total earnings from seven
previous Classics. Since joining the
LPGA in 2000, Jang missed playing here
only in 2005. While she missed the cut
twice – in 2000 and 2003 – her total
winnings here stand at $216,284.
Jang said she started the day shooting for a
score of -3 or 5-under. Try as she might, she
said she couldn’t chalk up the birdies she
needed even though she came in at four
under par, which she felt was very good. As
for feeling good, Jang said the weather during
the front end of the week didn’t do her
game any good. Jang told the media in her
post-tournament interview that her muscles
tend to get tight and achy in cold, damp
weather. It was that and then some for the
early-week practice sessions. Sunday’s fair
and warmer conditions were more to her liking,
but not enough so she could come up
with the win.
Jang has also done well at the Wegmans
2009 LPGA Corning Classic
2009 LPGA Corning Classic
of Round Three, it was still anyone’s tournament
come Sunday. Game on.
Jang and Blasberg at -7 were in the final group
while Lindley and Hull at -6 were in the nextto-last
group. As the tournament played out,
fans couldn’t have asked for a better setup.
Well, maybe they could...a head-to-head
through 18 might have been more exciting,
but only slightly so. In the early going, Jang
was setting the excitement bar with birdies
on holes 2 and 4 and then an eagle on 5 to
move to 11 under. Lindley notched birdies
on holes 2 and 3 but gave one back with a
bogey on 4 to go to -7 where she remained
through the front nine. Jang returned the favor
with a bogey on 9 to stand at -10 at the
IF THE BALL’S PINK, it must be Paula Creamer.
A fan favorite wherever she plays, Paula has
special reasons for wanting to win at Corning.
She has family in Ithaca. -Richard Bauman
TWICE A LEADER – Erica Blasberg played her way to
the top of the leaderboard twice – on Thursday and
Saturday – but couldn’t finish the job as she fired a 79 on
Sunday to finish tied for 38th and earned $8,000. -Jim Gill
turn. The back nine belonged to Lindley as
she started with three birdies and added another
Sudden Death
Our sixth time
When the Monday Dresser-Rand and the Wednesday Bill Griffiths Pro Ams
were played in less than ideal...heck, let’s be honest...in near unbearable
conditions...the weather turned only mildly better for Thursday’s first round.
Despite damp, 40-degree weather as the early starters teed off, 47 players
turned in sub-par rounds. At day’s end, Erica Blasberg’s bogey-free 65 (-7) –
a personal best – paced the field. Two strokes back were Karine Icher and
Na On Min at -5 while two past champs, Sherri Turner (‘88) and Jimin Kang
(‘05), and two rookies, Na-Yeon Choi and Sandra Gal, were clustered at -4.
Blasberg seemed thankful for the nasty
early-week weather which saw her wearing
a lot more rain gear than she wore Thursday.
Turner, a Corning Classic veteran and
no stranger to the vagaries of our weather,
seemed almost right at home in it. Only
two other players had bogey-free opening
rounds. Na On Min (34-33=67, -5), a secondyear
pro, had five birdies while Kris Tamulis
had three. At day’s end, 59 players finished
the opening round of our 30th LPGA Corning
Classic with rounds of even par or better.
Paula Creamer and Rosie Jones, two crowd
favorites, finished with a -2 70 and a two-over
74, respectively. Clearly the fans were hoping
for better. Rosie, admittedly rusty after two
years of retirement, had her cap set to make
the cut, but her opening round showed that
might indeed be a challenge. Still, her many
fans here were pulling for her. Jones, who
made a habit of finishing in the top 10 here,
won her back-to-back titles in 1996 and 1997
and is the all-time money leader here with
$564,630. She’s also eighth on the LPGA Official
Career Money List with just over $8.3
million in earnings.
On Friday, Dina Ammaccapane notched a
second 69 to take a one stroke lead into the
weekend at -6. Blasberg was joined by Janice
Moodie, Katie Futcher and Wendy Ward
all bunched a stroke back while Leta Lindley,
Johanna Head, Jeong Jang and Becky Morgan
were clustered at -4.
Fans were openly disappointed as Jones
missed the cut for only the second time
in 21 appearances here. The cut was at 142
(+2) and Jones, with 74-76=150 was at +8.
Two other past champs exiting the field Friday
were Cindy Rarick (‘87) and Defending
Champ Young Kim, who was +6 after play
Friday. Playing on were Laura Diaz (‘02) at -3,
Hee Won Han (‘06) at 146, Turner at 144, and
Kang (05), the only one still in contention at
-3, three strokes behind Ammaccapane.
With the field cut to 71, the weather finally
decided to put in a favorable appearance
with bright sunshine and temperatures in
the 70’s, much to the delight of players, fans
and tournament organizers... especially tournament
organizers. Sunshine translates to
feet on the course and feet on the course
in turn translates to money in the coffers for
our tournament’s beneficiaries.
A MOST IMPORTANT READ – Leta Lindley
and her husband caddie, Matt Plagmann,
eyeball the final putt. They done good.
-Chris Wiggins
Blasberg showed she was not going away as
she moved back atop the leader board along
with Jang at -7. Lindley and Hull were knotted
two strokes back. As for Creamer, she followed
her 74 on Friday with a 71 to stand at
-1. Clearly she was in for an uphill battle from
her spot six strokes back. But with 27 players
within five strokes of the leaders at the end
also at -11 on the final tee. One hole later, it
was O.T. as both players held par on 18.
Replaying 18 in the sudden-death format,
Jang made the final hole interesting as she
sent her drive left and put her approach
into the green-side bunker, then chipped to
within inches of the hole for a sure par. Lindley
held the fairway and put her second shot
six feet from the hole to seemingly set the
tone for a second playoff hole. That was not
to be. Lindley calmly stroked the six-footer
home for birdie and our 30th LPGA Corning
Classic crown...and more.
After 14 years on the LPGA Tour, Lindley had
her first victory, as she became our ninth
Rolex First Time Watch winner in our event’s
30 years. In winning in her 295th tournament
start, she tied Missie George as the third-longest
stretch on tour before notching her first
title. It also brought her the $225,000 winner’s
check, the Steuben Champions bowl,
and a beautiful bouquet of roses.
On top of that, she earned an all-inclusive
stay for two at a Canyon Ranch resort, which
she will no doubt enjoy with her husband
and caddie, Matt Plagmann. We would hope
Canyon Ranch might expand that prize to include
the couple’s two young children, Cole,
15
4, and Reese, 2.

In summary, if spectators want to see
Pro’s Tip: A par 5 reachable in two
makes it a good birdie hole. Players almost
have to birdie here to keep up with the field.
Highlight Note: Four double eagles have
been scored here. Jackie Bertsch holed a 4
choice for Lynn Adams in 1991, Jody Anschutz
in 1993 and Nancy Lopez in 1996.
Holes 2 and 5 have provided the most eagles,
with five players making eagles on both
in a single round: Kelly Robbins (‘93); Stephanie
Lowe (‘98); Lori Kane (‘03); Carin Koch
(‘04); and Morgan Pressel in (06). In ‘04, Kelli
Pro’s Tip: A long par 3 that demands an
accurate tee shot because the green has a
severe right-to-left slope.
Highlight Note: Aces have been notched
here by Lynn Adams in 1993, by a very pregnant
Nancy Ramsbottom in 1994, and Sung
Ah Yim in ‘05. Added note: Yim’s was one
of four aces notched in the ‘05 tournament,
N
N
Pro’s Tip: A par 4 that doesn’t need
driver off the tee because it’s important to
keep the ball in the fairway for a decent shot
to the green. The tricky front-sloping green
makes it best to stay below the pin.
Highlight Note: With the O.B. on the right
Pro’s Tip: This is a positioning hole that
calls for an iron off the tee and and down
the hill for an 8 or 9 iron approach. The drive
must be short enough to avoid the creek
and not so long as to go through the fairway
and end up behind trees on the right. The
rolling green with its severe back-to-front
