Etta James has literally lived the genre of the blues. Having endured traumas
that most would have succumbed to,Etta not only fought life’s tragedies—she sang her
way through them. Her voice was her salvation, a medium through which she rose up
out of the chaos and wreckage of misfortune. And now that voice, filled with honesty,
depth and earthiness, is a glorious medal of honor and a gift to her lucky listeners.
Gutsy from the get-go, the child prodigy (born Jamesetta Hawkins in Los Angeles in
1938), was performing at age five in her family’s Baptist church, and singing on the
local radio station soon after. When she scored her first record deal at age 16, Jamesetta
inverted her name to Etta James and joined Johnny Otis’ band, along with her female
vocal group “The Peaches” (which, incidentally, was Etta’s nickname). Now, more than
fifty years later,Etta enjoys massive success as a performer,recording artist,Rock & Roll
Hall of Fame inductee, Grammy ® winner, and living legend.
It’s true Etta reigned supreme as an R&B matriarch, blues vocalist and pop star, but her
distinctive ballad interpretations must be given equal praise. On Love Songs, Etta’s
astounding abilities as a vocal stylist have a chance to shine. Whether interpreting
timeless standards by Harold Arlen, Cole Porter and George Gershwin, or modern classics
by Otis Redding, Etta pours an arresting amount of soul, subtlety and finesse into
every note.
While Etta is usually expected to deliver raucous and rollicking blues (with erotic stage
antics to match), on Love Songs Etta takes a step back and tenderly delivers a collection
of romantic classics.Though she recorded most of these songs with a big band,
the backdrop of horns and rhythm section are intricate and tasty yet never in the way,
never too heavy, always leaving room for Etta’s delicate inflections.
Miss Peaches’ voice has deepened significantly over the years, which only intensifies
her beautiful ability to convey life’s sorrows, triumphs, hope and love. Hers is a husky
contralto that has lived to tell the tale, her wisdom reflected in her finesse as an interpreter—whether
bending a note, laying on thick vibrato, abstaining from it, soaring in
volume, or diminishing to a whisper—Etta brings an element of delicious unpredictability
to each song. That extraordinary skill, paired with the exquisite melodies and
poetry of these timeless songs, make for essential listening.
