Requirements for the HETAS Approved Retailer certification 

Training 

Registration onto the HETAS Approved Retailer certification requires that at least one member of 

showroom staff is trained to H002 (Solid Fuel Regulations & Standards) level. We will accept 

equivalent or higher level HETAS training qualifications providing that the certificate was obtained in 

the past five years (earliest 01/07/2006). Applicants from old courses will be sent the course 

curriculum and will be expected to either update their knowledge or attend a refresher like day two 

of the H002 course. 

Trained Advisors should keep a copy of Approved Documents J and L in the showroom for reference 

at all times. They are available to download free here:

HETAS Advice Sheets 

We have been working hard to develop a collection of advice sheets for consumers. We surveyed 

retailers to find out what the most commonly asked questions were and what advice they would like 

to see on sheets. You can find a list of the various topics on the scale of fees sheet in this application 

pack. 

The Approved Retailer certification requires that you have a display all of the available advice sheets 

on a permanent basis. When purchasing advice sheet packs, they will contain a mixture of all of the 

different topics of advice sheets that are available. Further copies can be printed from electronic 

masters provided free (or sent from HETAS subject to charge). Advice sheet updates will be emailed 

and downloadable from our website. 

You can find a listing of advice sheets with availability on the scale of fees document. 

Retailers should enable customers to pick their own copies of advice sheets at each showroom. 

Appliance Labelling 

Each appliance should have the following information on display as a minimum to fulfil the 

requirement of the Approved Retailer certification:

For features such as moisture content, your fuel supplier should be able to give you a reading with 

relative ease. You can purchase moisture meters (basic units start at £10) to help achieve a rough 

estimate. 

Home Surveying 

In order to protect the customer and the retailer, it is strongly recommended that the retailer 

establishes good practice for the point at which a domestic customer buys an appliance. This may be 

developed into a scheme requirement in the future. The following section describes proposed good 

practice. 

Stove retailers should recommend that a consumer has a home survey carried out by a competent 

person (H002 or better) before deciding on the purchase of a solid fuel appliance. They should offer 

to do it themselves (via their trained advisor/s or internally registered installers). If they cannot fulfil 

this requirement, they should have a list of local HETAS registered installers to offer to customers. 

Approved Retailers should advise customers that it would be best practice to have a chimney survey 

conducted as part of the home survey (there are circumstances when a competent person can judge 

that a survey is not required). 

Before a retailer sells an appliance (depending on buyer type): 

 

 

 

For a HETAS approved installer, they should have done appropriate surveying before purchase. 

For a non-HETAS installer, they should be reminded of their legal obligations with regard to 

advising the customer to get building control approval. 

For a consumer, they should check that the appliance being purchased is compatible with the 

result of a home survey report. 


Other Requirements 

 

 

Approved retailers must display at least one HETAS approved product for sale. For appliance 

retailers this means at least one HETAS approved appliance and for fuel retailers this means one 

HETAS approved fuel. 

Retailers must have a physical retail outlet. This scheme is designed to help customers view 

product and receive face to face advice at physical retail outlets that meet our minimum set of 

requirements. 

Application 

Should you meet all of the criteria for HETAS Approved Retailer and all payments are fully 

completed, your membership will begin on the same day that your certificate is signed and sent to 

you. 

Registration is to be renewed annually and will expire on the anniversary of the approval certificates 

first issuing.
