for over a hundred years and bathrooms for almost seventy. As well as 

experience, consideration is important to us. Consideration for you and

A new product must always 

be better than what went before. 

The goal is to make your life even easier. 

A designer combines the talents of an artist, an engineer and a sociologist. 

All products and functional items need to be user-friendly. They also have to 

fit into a particular context and they have to be practical to produce 

– preferably as economically as possible. 

Knud Holscher is Ifö’s chief designer. Steeped in the Scandinavian tradition of 

architecture and design, he has even worked with the great Arne Jacobsen. 

The challenge for these pioneers is to bring functional and attractive products 

to everyone. Inspiration is drawn from working people: farmers, fishermen 

and craftsmen, and this is also the source of the natural simplicity embodied 

in “Scandinavian Design”. 

A designer works with a pen in one hand and post-it notes in the other. 

The job actually involves tying together a large number of sometimes entirely 

contradictory requirements. The challenge, after thousands of hours of 

work, research, trials and tests, often lies in identifying the simple and 

obvious solution. That’s what makes a design genius. Just like Professor 

Knud Holscher. 

Knud Holscher’s more recent creations include Ifö Sign Art, which won the 

international red dot design award in 2006.

The most important thing for our customers is that the WC unit and 

wash basin are easy to keep clean and hygienic. No doubt you agree? 

The secret lies in the glaze, the surface layer that protects the actual 

porcelain. The smoother the glaze, the fewer limescale and dirt deposits. 

Cleaning is then easier and the lifetime of the porcelain is extended. 

To finish the glaze, we add an extra layer. This layer forms an ultra-thin 

transparent coating that is incredibly smooth. The result is a first-class, 

dirt-resistant glaze, primarily on all the most sensitive and exposed 

parts of the toilet and wash basin. We already finish most of our products 

with Ifö Clean, so your bathroom will now always stay fresh and clean.

inspiring suggestions for those 

considering a new bathroom. 

Usually, the size of the room determines how much you can do with your 

bathroom. But with a little planning and imagination, even the smallest 

bathroom can be stunning. Here, interior designer and stylist Åsa Dyberg 

has selected various Ifö products to create 14 different inspirational 

bathroom looks. 

We’ve split the suggestions according to size: Small, Medium and Large.

SMALL Here the focus is mainly on the small bathroom. 

Note that many of Ifö’s wash basins and items of bathroom 

furniture also come in Compact models that are a little 

shallower than usual. Several wash basins also come as 

corner units for another space-saving option. The width 

of the base cabinets used here is max 60 cm. 

MEDIUM This is the size of bathroom you would normally 

find in your average house or apartment. Note how well Ifö’s 

bathroom products work with each other, how well they go 

together and how easy it is to create something new and 

exciting even in a relatively limited space. The width of the 

base cabinets used here is between 75 and 90 cm. 

LARGE Here the bathroom is larger, like you might find in a 

newbuild house or apartment. It is increasingly common for 

people to prioritise an attractive, relaxing and large bathroom. 

We essentially prioritise our dreams, don’t we? You can see 

here how to create a personal, but also timeless, bathroom 

with the help of Ifö’s products. The width of the base cabinets 

used here is 120 cm and above.

Think about your different moods when designing your bathroom. 

Changes can easily be made using textiles and accessories. 

For example, you can choose cool, pale colours or warm, earthy 

ones depending on the season. 

It is also worth considering the lighting. Of course you have to be 

able to see clearly when putting on make-up or shaving. But you 

can have more than just lighting by the mirror.

Ifö Sense Art’s base cabinets and high cabinets have 

drawers and doors with a smooth self closing mechanism. 

The high cabinet has four drawers, three of which slide 

out with the door. The wall cabinet has a soft-close 

hinge at the top of the door, which opens upwards. The 

cabinets can be lined up side by side, as long as they are 

6 cm from a corner. All the drawers and doors have an 

integrated handle in aluminium. Ifö Sense Art is delivered 

factory assembled, with accompanying adjustable 

hanging brackets. 

The wash basin is ordered separately. The base cabinet 

comes with a drawer liner, an inner drawer, adjustable 

hanging brackets and a water trap.

Ifö Sense 

Ifö Sense is a modern furniture range for the discerning eye. The practical 

drawers and spacious cabinets in a stylish design are suitable for both 

small and extra large wash basins, making them ideal for any size of 

bathroom. Ifö Sense bathroom furniture goes perfectly with Ifö Sign and 

Ifö Sign Art wash basins. The cabinets, doors and drawer fronts are made 

of moisture proof MDF. While the cabinets are hard lacquered in frost 

white, the doors and fronts come in a range of finishes. For 2011 you 

have a choice of high shine white or black, frost white, oak or walnut, the 

latter two being hard lacquered wood veneers. All the units come with 

adjustable hanging brackets and mounting rails. The drawers and doors 

have an integrated handle and a soft-close mechanism. 

Ifö Sense is also available in Compact format, i.e. with a depth of just 366 mm 

– ideal for the small or narrow bathroom. The furniture is delivered ready 

assembled. All you have to do is attach the fronts!

This furniture range offers excellent value, with its simple, minimalist 

and functional Scandinavian design. In white or the latest trend in 

interiors, black oak, the new Ifö Parade exudes modern quality and 

elegance. 

Ifö Parade comes in two finishes: a timeless white and a naturalistic 

melamine in a black oak finish. The cabinets and doors are attractively 

colour matched and handles in matt chrome are included. Handles in 

matching white/black and chrome are available as an option. The doors 

have a soft-close hinge and the high cabinet is fitted with a full-length

WASH BASINS 

A sparklingly clean wash basin will always put you in a good mood. 

As you might imagine, the secret lies in the porcelain. Glazed porcelain 

has a special shine and is incredibly hard-wearing. The fact that 400 

year-old Chinese porcelain from the Ming dynasty is still in use today 

says it all, really. And we manufacture our porcelain in much the same 

way as they did then – using rather more modern methods of course.

Say good morning to 

your new wash basin 

A wash basin should be good looking and easy to keep clean, with plenty 

of space for your bits and pieces. Simply “reversing” a traditional wash 

basin, so that it is rounded at the back instead of the front, creates much 

more vanity space. That’s innovative design. You choose the size of the 

wash basin and whether you want it central or to the side. Or whether 

you want a separate space in the bathroom. After all, it can be good to 

get a little peace and quiet in the morning. 

TIMELESS DESIGN 

A wash basin is a quality product, built to last, which means it 

needs a look that is timeless. That’s why we put a great deal of 

work into the appearance. Many of our wash basins are designed 

by Professor Knud Holscher. If anyone has an eye for design that 

will stand the test of time, it’s him. 

NEAT AND TIDY 

You do all sorts of things at the wash basin, in front of the mirror, 

so you need plenty of space to keep all your things handy. But 

don’t worry, we have thought of that. Look, for example, at the Ifö 

Sign and Ifö Sign Art wash basins. They have space for much more 

than just your toothbrush mug! Add a base cabinet with practical 

drawers and cupboard space and you have somewhere to put

A wash basin is just a 

wash basin, or is it? 

A smart porcelain wash basin on a pedestal, with an equally attractive 

mirror above, creates an almost sculptural effect when you look into 

your new bathroom. In sparkling white, just like Carrara marble. When 

choosing a wash basin, you first need to decide whether you want a 

sculptural statement (that is also easy to clean) or whether your main 

focus is on storage and the elusive bathroom furniture that is both 

beautiful and practical.

FREE-STANDING OR WALL-MOUNTED 

A wash basin can be fitted on the wall and connected 

to the waste either in the floor or concealed within the 

wall. In the first option, you can conceal the waste pipe 

with a pedestal, while in the second the waste pipe 

can be completely hidden. Both options create a 

beautifully elegant look, and both are simple to keep 

clean, because you can get to every little nook under 

the wash basin. 

COMBINED WITH A BASE CABINET 

You can also place the wash basin on a base cabinet. 

The cabinet and the wash basin are designed to go 

together, forming a harmonious unit. This gives you 

plenty of space for everything you need in front of the 

mirror and, since all Ifö’s base cabinets leave a good 

gap between the unit and the floor, cleaning is also 

very easy. 

ON OR UNDER A BENCH PLATE 

Or why not place the wash basin on top of a bench 

plate on the base cabinet? The result is wonderfully 

elegant and we have several models of wash basin 

that will give your bathroom a little extra lift. Another 

option is to have the wash basin recessed, letting a 

beautiful sheet of wood, marble or even granite take 

centre stage.

WC UNITS 

Do WC units need to be attractive? Of course. But only as long as they 

also do a first-class job. They need to be easy to keep clean and fresh 

for a long time, as we’re sure you’ll agree. That’s why Ifö is launching 

a brand new glaze – Ifö Clean – that makes it even more difficult for 

limescale and dirt to get a foothold, and ensures that your new WC unit 

lasts much longer.

A WC unit from Ifö 

is even smarter 

than it looks. 

When the word innovation is mentioned, a WC unit may not be the 

first thing that comes to mind. However, the truth is that a great deal 

has happened since the first WC appeared. Originally, the cistern was 

hung high up on the wall and a flush used almost 20 litres of water 

– compared with today’s 2 or 4! Ifö has been making WC units since 

1936, gaining a great deal of experience along the way. So today, as 

well as saving water, you get a WC unit that stays fresh and clean for 

a long time.

NEW GLAZE – WHERE IT’S NEEDED MOST 

The smoother the glaze, the fewer deposits. Now Ifö has 

developed a brand-new, patent-pending glaze that makes the 

WC much easier to keep clean. We’ve chosen to call the glaze 

simply Ifö Clean. Most of our WC units have this in the actual 

bowl, the most critical part of the WC unit, where deposits can 

easily build up. All you need to do is regularly use a toilet brush 

and a little toilet cleaner. 

SEPARATE INNER CISTERN 

All our newer WC units, including all Ifö Sign and Ifö Sign Art, 

have a separate inner cistern, a plastic tank that sits inside 

the porcelain outer casing. This makes filling quieter and 

avoids condensation on and under the casing, giving dirt less 

to stick to and removing suspicions that your WC might be 

leaking. There is also no risk of water damage if an accident 

happens and the outer casing is broken. 


MINIMAL JOINS AND EASY ACCESS ALL OVER 

You know how easily dirt collects in joins. That’s why we’ve 

worked hard to remove as many as possible. For example, both 

the Ifö Sign and Ifö Sign Art have a seamless one-piece cistern 

lid. We’ve also made sure that you can get to every nook of 

the WC unit, including under and behind, for ease of cleaning. 

Several of our floor-mounted WC units are glued to the floor, 

enabling us to avoid screws, which can easily collect dirt. This 

also creates a complete seal with the floor. 

LOW FLUSH 

Ifö was the first company in the world to produce a low flush 

toilet. By channelling the flow of water better, we managed to 

achieve considerably more flushing power with less water – 

something that nobody had thought of before. We do a service 

for the environment and you enjoy lower water bills. 

FRESCH WC 

All the Ifö Sign and Ifö Sign Art WC units come with Fresh WC. 

You simply place the tablet in the flush button for a freshly 

scented WC at all times. 

PARTS GUARANTEE 

All Ifö’s spare parts are guaranteed to remain in stock for at 

least 5 years, extended to at least 10 years for wear parts. That 

will make your plumber happy, as our stock of parts enables 

him or her to help you much more quickly if something in your 

bathroom breaks. 

AWARD-WINNING DESIGN 

Our Sign Art WC, designed by Knud Holscher, has received the 

international red dot design award. As well as being aesthetically 

pleasing, the design includes a range of details that 

show how painstaking Knud Holscher is and how important it 

is for him to know exactly how a product will actually be used

Wall-hung or 

floor-mounted WC? 

A decision that you need to take early on when planning 

a new bathroom is whether the WC and any bidet are 

to hang on the wall or stand on the floor, as they have 

normally done. The decision affects the preparations and 

building work, and changing your mind during the project 

is likely to be costly. 

FLOOR-MOUNTED 

Most bathrooms are built with a waste pipe running down into 

the floor. Once the damp-proofing is complete and the flooring 

laid, essentially all that remains is to place the WC over the waste 

pipe and screw or glue it in place. Particularly when refurbishing 

an old bathroom, it is often much easier (and cheaper) to 

simply replace the old floor-mounted WC with a new one.

WALL-HUNG 

The advantages of a wall-hung WC and bidet are clear. 

Cleaning underneath is easy and the bathroom always looks 

fresh. Since the water pipes and waste are run through the wall 

(behind the unit), the WC can also be made much neater and 

more attractive. The cistern and flushing mechanism are also 

concealed behind the wall, out of your sight. Ifö’s popular wallhanging 

system is now in high demand, and certainly makes 

for a stylish bathroom. 

A full or half-wall is built behind the WC and bidet, and behind 

this goes the frame on which the WC and bidet hang. The space 

must naturally be damp-proofed and an inspection hatch fitted 

to allow future access for servicing or repairs. The flush front 

cover acts as an inspection hatch and, if you choose a halfwall, 

a removable shelf is built in the middle of the wall for easy 

access.

focused on good design. We’ve also taken great pains to 

harmonise the style of the showers with the other Ifö products, 

since the overall feel of the bathroom is so important. Choice 

is also important and we have that covered too, with several 

different models to choose from and glass in many colours and 

patterns. Some models also offer a choice of natural anodised 

or lacquered aluminium profiles. 

ONLY THE BEST MATERIALS FOR THE JOB 

We’ve been making showers for so long that we know what it 

takes for a shower to come up to scratch. We only use materials 

that are happy with water: such as aluminium, stainless steel, 

glass and plastic. The glass in an Ifö shower is always toughened 

and at least the minimum thickness so that absolutely nothing 

can go wrong. If you wish, you can also have the glass for the 

Ifö Space 2000 treated with a special film that keeps limescale 

and other deposits from sticking. We also guarantee that all 

spare parts will remain in stock for at least 5 years, which can 

be comforting to know. 

INGENIUS DESIGN 

Our designers and engineers take immense care with every 

detail of your shower. The doors need to slide easily even after 

a long time in use, seals must be completely watertight, visible 

screws have been removed to avoid dirt collecting and many 

other small details have been considered. Small things perhaps, 

but appreciated in the long run.

Shower cubicle 

or shower enclosure? 

The first thing you need to decide, when considering a shower, is whether 

you want a shower cubicle, a corner enclosure or a niche enclosure. 

A cubicle comes complete and ready for a plumber to install quickly and 

easily. You can jump in the shower as soon as it has been connected to the 

water and waste. A cubicle is often a stylish turnkey solution that in most 

cases includes a mixer tap and shower head. 

A corner or niche enclosure requires a little more preparatory work, but 

the result is neater and more elegant. An enclosure can also save valuable 

space in the bathroom.

SHOWER CUBICLES 

A shower cubicle is a completely closed system – a little bathroom 

in itself, if you will. It has glass or styrene walls on all sides, including 

against the bathroom wall or walls. It stands on a shower tray, 

integrated with the cubicle, which collects all the shower water 

and channels it down the waste pipe. 

This gives you much more freedom to choose where you want your 

cubicle. Since the cubicle is relatively watertight, it allows you to 

explore many more materials when fitting out your bathroom. 

CORNER AND NICHE ENCLOSURES 

An enclosure has no shower tray – the sealed bathroom floor with 

built-in shower drain does the job. It also doesn’t have glass walls 

at the back. The main advantage of an enclosure is that you save 

space in the bathroom. You can choose practically whatever size 

you want and, since the door or doors can remain open when you 

aren’t showering, the whole bathroom feels bigger. A niche door or 

single screen can also easily be folded away or slid to the side when 

not in use. All Ifö’s different models and sizes, coupled with its range 

of separate parts, allow you to put together a shower to fit almost 

any space. 

Bear in mind that the floor has to slope towards the drain, to stop 

water flooding out. As mentioned before, a corner or niche enclosure 

requires a little more planning.

What kind of enclosure should I choose?

CORNER ENCLOSURES 

Putting a shower in the corner of a bathroom saves space. 

It is also by far the most common position to use. The shower 

enclosures come in a range of different shapes and sizes, so 

you can make even better use of the space. 

Straight corner 

You get a spacious shower of a simple and solid design, with 

a long and problem-free life as a right-angled corner is rather 

easier to construct. 

Rounded or Pentagonal corner 

Choose these models if space is a consideration. Just “cutting” 

30 to 40 cm off the corner makes the bathroom feel much bigger. 

And you get almost the same space to shower in, since you 

tend not to shower out in the corner. It also feels more pleasant 

to walk past a “rounded” corner than a pointed/right-angled 

one. 

NICHE SHOWERS 

A niche shower is basically a glass wall with a door, or just 

a door, that you place between two walls. If you’re fortunate 

enough to have such a niche or alcove in your bathroom, it’s the 

very best place to put a shower. It will be relatively watertight 

and construction will be easy. 

SINGLE SCREEN 

A single screen is the very simplest of solutions, gaining you 

a great deal of space. However, as you no doubt appreciate, 

the lack of one side means it’s not watertight. But maybe that 

doesn’t matter in your bathroom?

The frameless glass attached to the wall with just a discreet aluminium 

profile almost makes the Ifö Space 2000 look like it’s floating. The glass

For a simple shower solution in the bathroom, choose a single Ifö

Imagine placing another of these shower enclosures at an

Ifö Solid 

Ifö Solid is a popular model that comes as a corner enclosure, niche 

enclosure and cubicle. Ifö Solid has supporting aluminium profiles 

for excellent stability and safety, which can be a comfort if you have 

children. As part of its design, Ifö Solid has sliding doors and a floor 

profile that create a tight seal with the floor to stop water running out. 

Ifö Solid offers a range of options, including a straight or rounded corner, 

either half-rounded or pentagonal in shape. The aluminium profiles are 

available in a natural anodised or lacquered white finish. As with the Ifö 

Space 2000, there are various choices of glass. Ifö Solid also works well

Start with you 

Think about what you and your family need from your future 

bathroom. Consider how things are at the moment and what 

you want to change. And of course how much money you want 

to spend. Be practical and realistic. You may well have to compromise, 

but never lose sight of your dreams. You want this to 

be a room to treasure, don’t you? 

STEP 

2 

Find the right tradesmen 

You can do much of the preparatory work yourself, but you must 

have an approved electrician for all electrical work, and insurance 

companies require an authorised plumber to guarantee 

an absolutely watertight bathroom. Ask for several quotations 

that you can then compare. However, don’t just look at the price. 

Choose tradesmen who you trust and can discuss plans with 

and who can give good advice. 

STEP 3 

The most important decisions first 

Some decisions have to be taken as early as possible, as they 

determine both the budget and subsequent planning. You need 

to decide whether you want a wall-hung or floor-mounted WC 

unit. Shower and/or bath? Underfloor heating? What storage do 

you need? What lighting do you want? And do you have anything 

else on your wish list? You can imagine how invaluable professional 

advice is at this stage. 

STEP 4 

Note the layout of the room 

A room always has its possibilities and limitations. Of course 

everything can be altered, you can move walls, change the 

plumbing and so on, but this may be at a considerable cost. 

What you need is a general drawing of the room that you can 

use in your planning. 

Now you’re an architect 

On the drawing, sketch in the WC, bidet, washbasin(s), the 

shower, perhaps the bathtub, the furniture and anything else 

you want. It’s worth coming up with several alternatives that 

you can then check against you and your family’s list of 

requirements. These drawings are useful to have when you talk 

to the architect or whoever is going to draw up the final plan. 

STEP 6 

Use colour and design to realise your dreams 

This requires inspiration. Visit as many bathroom and home 

improvement stores as you can. Magazines and the internet 

are also full of inspiration. Cut out or print pictures that you like 

and, just like an architect, create a number of mood boards. See 

which different styles best suit your home – and which ones you 

really like. 

Some design rules 

(that you’re absolutely free to ignore!): 

Light colours make a room bigger, dark ones make it smaller. 

Light / cold colours give a bathroom a fresh look. 

Furnish according to how you mostly use the room. 

A contrasting colour, shape or material is eye-catching. 

Remember that the bathroom must be easy to clean. 

Choose quality – you want your bathroom to last at least 10 

years. 

Put paint samples on the wall and preferably choose materials 

on site.
