<str<strong>on</strong>g>Gender</str<strong>on</strong>g> Influences On Child Survival, Health And Nutriti<strong>on</strong>: A Narrative Review<br />

Key messages <strong>on</strong> gender-sensitive interventi<strong>on</strong>s addressing <strong>child</strong> <strong>health</strong> <strong>and</strong> nutriti<strong>on</strong><br />

‣ There are very few examples of evaluated gender-sensitive interventi<strong>on</strong>s that explicitly aim to<br />

impact young <strong>child</strong> <strong>survival</strong>, <strong>health</strong> <strong>and</strong> nutriti<strong>on</strong>;<br />

‣ Addressing modes of service delivery must involve making services more accessible to carers of<br />

<strong>child</strong>ren; interventi<strong>on</strong>s which have included a focus <strong>on</strong> accessing households directly through<br />

home visits or that address barriers to reaching facilities <strong>and</strong> seek to mobilize <strong>and</strong> engage<br />

communities have been effective in improving <strong>child</strong> <strong>health</strong> <strong>and</strong> nutriti<strong>on</strong> outcomes;<br />

‣ Interventi<strong>on</strong>s have also dem<strong>on</strong>strated the benefits of including senior females, such as<br />

gr<strong>and</strong>mothers in improving attitudes <strong>and</strong> practices regarding infant nutriti<strong>on</strong>;<br />

‣ Bey<strong>on</strong>d the realm of <strong>child</strong> <strong>health</strong> <strong>and</strong> nutriti<strong>on</strong> programming, interventi<strong>on</strong>s addressing women’s<br />

financial struggles, through cash transfers <strong>and</strong> micro credit schemes have shown benefits for<br />

<strong>child</strong> <strong>health</strong> <strong>and</strong> nutriti<strong>on</strong> but these kinds of initiatives need careful planning <strong>and</strong> m<strong>on</strong>itoring to<br />

avoid negative c<strong>on</strong>sequences such as the reinforcing of gender norms <strong>and</strong> gender-based<br />

violence;<br />

‣ Overall the review of interventi<strong>on</strong>s dem<strong>on</strong>strates that there are benefits to be reaped by<br />

designing programmes that use gender-sensitive approaches to address <strong>child</strong> <strong>survival</strong>, <strong>health</strong><br />

<strong>and</strong> nutriti<strong>on</strong>.<br />

‣ There is a need to document gender-sensitive interventi<strong>on</strong>s <strong>on</strong> <strong>child</strong> <strong>health</strong> <strong>and</strong> nutriti<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> to<br />

make links between other interventi<strong>on</strong>s aimed at improving gender-equity in <strong>health</strong> (e.g.<br />

addressing violence) <strong>and</strong> specific <strong>child</strong> <strong>health</strong> outcomes.<br />
