Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione’s etching of
the Sorceress/Melancholia captures the fear of
witchcraft that plagued Europe in the mid-17th
century. This piece is different from his many
favorite Biblical paintings. In this work, Castiglione
incorporated a large concern of witchcraft and
his passion of introducing animals.
