The city that
NEVER SLEEPS
Frank Sinatra immortalised New York City in his song “New York New York”. Never was a truer word sung
than when he referred to New York as the city that never sleeps.
If you’re a shopaholic - go to New York. The
shopping is to die for (NB: 5th Avenue is passe,
Madison is now IT) and the shops are open late
every day of the week except for Christmas Day
(that was okay - I needed the sleep).
If you fancy catching a show, you have the choice
of seeing a production on Broadway, off Broadway
or off off Broadway (think about it - it makes
sense!). Cats, Phantom of the Opera, Rent, Beauty
and the Beast and the Lion King are still running.
Cabaret is now showing at Studio54 instead of the
Kit Kat Club (it burnt down late last year) with
Jennifer Jason Leigh (fabulous! but watch out for
Terri Hatcher in LA!!). If you’d rather keep away
from the single white female, then you may prefer
to see Christian Slater in “Side Man” or Nicole
Kidman in “The Blue Room”.
After, indulge yourself in one of the endless array of
restaurants, deli’s and cafes (the Fashion Café is
COOL) which caters to every palate and hip pocket.
Or try out one of the many clubs in Times Square
(they go off, particularly on New Years Eve).
Alternatively, you may care to smoke a cigar
(currently the popular alternative to the cigarette) in
one of New York’s cigar bars which are very BIG, as
indeed are chocolate cigars (for St Valentine’s Day),
thanks to Mr Clinton.
Fitness fanatics may like to walk to the top of the
Statue of Liberty (it only takes a couple of hours
but the view is well worth it), the Empire State
Building or enter the midnight 5km run held every
New Years Eve in Central Park after a spectacular
fireworks display.
If you’re interested in world affairs, a tour of the UN
building is a must (they even let you into the
Security Council’s chambers!).
New York is eclectic. It has a large immigrant
population and rich and poor live side by side -
Harlem ends on one side of the street and a
fashionable neighbourhood begins on the other.
It is vibrant, it is dynamic, it is after all the home
of Wall Street and it’s safe. It has a little something
for everyone. Why not be a part of it in New York
New York?
For the art buff, the Guggenheim Museum
(currently showing masterpieces from the Centre
Georges Pompidou and Guggenheim Museum), the
Metropolitan Museum of Art (has a fabulous
selection of art from the Renaissance period and by
notable impressionists) and the Museum of Modern
Art (currently exhibiting work by Joan Miro and
Jackson Pollack) are but a few of the spectacular
galleries not to be missed.
If you fancy chilling out, you may care to see a
World Premiere of a movie. On 20 December 1998,
for example, there were nine world premieres of
movies in New York alone. And the movie theatres
are big!! Some of the small theatres have only 25
cinemas, the larger ones have 40. Alternatively, try
ice skating at Rockerfeller Centre but be warned -
the lines are LONG!.
