Join Hands Day
Faith in Action
message from the President
President/CEO – J. Michael Belz
Dear Member:
Safe, Strong, Secure
Sound business practices and a loyal
membership have fueled solid financial
growth for Catholic Life Insurance during the
first months of this year.
In March, we met via teleconference with the
analysts from A.M. Best Company, the nation’s leading insurance industry
rating company. We are pleased to report that for the 29th consecutive year,
we have earned an “excellent” rating. Please see page 4 for more details.
Corporate Governance
The desire to protect our families may be the initial reason many of us
join Catholic Life, but the volunteer service opportunities, the faith-based
common bond, the charitable giving and the social aspect are what makes
this membership organization different from others. On August 3-4, 2012,
we’ll celebrate our fraternal difference and learn about our financial strength
at the 93rd convention. Please see page 11 for a convention preview and page
12 for brief biographies of our Director candidates.
Service to Others
On May 5, 2012, nearly 750 individuals from 51 Branches joined together to
make a difference in their churches and communities. Called “Join Hands
Day,” this national day of service demonstrates what makes us different. By
engaging youth and adults together in service, this day tries to break down
the generational gap. Please see page 18 for project photos.
Future Leaders
Finally, on page 16, we present our 2012 All American Scholars. These 35
graduating high school seniors were chosen to receive a $1,000 award to help
them pay for their first year of college. We are proud of these young men and
women and are glad to take part in the educational journey.
In closing, we thank you for giving us the opportunity to serve you and your
family. We hope that you will continue to rely on the products and services
that we offer to help you protect your family and to meet your financial goals.
Sincerely,
Excellent
Status
A.M. Best Company,
an independent
insurance industry rating agency, has
reaffirmed Catholic Life Insurance’s financial
strength rating. Effective April 23, 2012,
A.M. Best rated Catholic Life Insurance’s
financial stability, security and management
performance as A-(Excellent) with a stable
outlook. This is the 29th consecutive year
that Catholic Life Insurance has earned the
“Excellent” rating.
The rating is based on a comprehensive
quantitative evaluation of the organization's
balance sheet strength, operating
performance and business profile. Insurers
in the excellent category are considered
to have an excellent ability to meet their
ongoing obligations. Moreover, a stable
outlook indicates low likelihood of a rating
change due to stable financial/market trends.
In their financial strength rating rationale,
A.M. Best states “The rating of Catholic Life
Insurance reflects its more than sufficient riskadjusted
capitalization, good credit quality
of its fixed income holdings, consistent trend
of positive statutory earnings, and its active
involvement in managing fraternal outreach
programs and lodge activities.”
“The Society is constantly looking for
opportunities to expand is membership
base by improving communication to its
members, enhancing membership services
and products, and increasing membership
benefits. The communication efforts
continue to positively impact sales results,
as the ongoing sharing of information with
members has resulted in strong brand
loyalty, as evidenced by a high persistency
ratio and a pattern of repeat business.”
Fr. Martin Leopold offers Mass as part of the
Flag Day celebration.
O GOD OUR CREATOR
From your provident hand we have received
our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit
of happiness. You have called us as your
people and given us the right and the duty
to worship you, the only true God, and your
Son, Jesus Christ. Through the power and
working of your Holy Spirit, you call us to
live out our faith in the midst of the world,
bringing the light and the saving truth of the
Gospel to every corner of society.
We ask you to bless us in our vigilance for
the gift of religious liberty.
Give us the strength of mind and heart to
readily defend our freedoms when they are
threatened; give us courage in making our
voices heard on behalf of the rights of your
Church and the freedom of conscience of all
people of faith.
Grant, we pray, O heavenly Father, a clear
and united voice to all your sons and
daughters gathered in your Church in this
decisive hour in the history of our nation,
so that, with every trial withstood and
every danger overcome—for the sake of
our children, our grandchildren, and all who
come after us—this great land will always
be “one nation, under God, indivisible,
with liberty and justice for all.” We ask this
through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
FLAG DAY 2012
For the 20th consecutive year, Catholic Life Insurance
hosted its annual old fashioned flag raising ceremony to
celebrate Flag Day. The event took place on Thursday, June
14 in honor of the 235th anniversary of the American Flag.
More than 300 people gathered to observe the flag rising
and enjoy refreshments.
This year’s event began with a Mass held in the brand-new
outdoor pavilion, officiated by Fr. Martin Leopold, followed
by the flag raising ceremony and a hot dog and ice cream
social. There was a brass band playing patriotic music, free
commemorative t-shirts for the attendees, a balloon artist
clown, and face painters. This year’s Flag Day Poster Contest
winners were invited to attend and each were given special
recognition.
The theme for the 2012 Flag Day Poster Contest was
“American Heroes,” and all of the children in grades
kindergarten through 5th grade were invited to create
a poster featuring the hero in their lives. More than 550
posters were submitted this year, and only 18 winners were
selected to receive an award and monetary prize. Catholic
Life would like to thank all of those who entered the contest,
and we encourage those who will be eligible next year to
participate again.
Attendees watch as the flag is raised.
Catholic Life Insurance
Spiritual Advisor
Faith
in action
The threat to Freedom of Religion,
a real and present danger.
As I have traveled throughout the Archdiocese of San Antonio in recent months, I've
seen the distress Catholics have shown over the recent challenges threatening the long
standing right of religious freedom in our great land. The First Amendment of the U.S.
Constitution instructs that our laws honored, protect, and respect the conscience
rights of religious institutions and individuals. However, today government’s regulative
and legislative intrusion poses a serious risk to “Our first, Most Cherished Freedom.”
When asked, people generally share concerns over any erosion of our First Amendment
rights. However, a number of people are not clear about what is truly at risk. The
threats against religious liberty have been obscured by reducing the public debate into
a confusing conversation over insurance and bookkeeping.
I must make it clear that the health insurance mandate that has been handed down by
the Department of Health and Human Services will force virtually all health care plans
to cover sterilization, abortion, and contraception. The so-called exemption, that has
some believing that the problem has been addressed and solved, dangerously attempts
to define religious ministry in historically narrow terms. Under the government's
definition, many Catholic and other religious ministries would be punished for serving
people of other denominations, or no belief at all. The First Amendment allows for no
such exemption and protects religious institutions from having to determine a person’s
religious affiliation before it can feed, clothe, teach, or heal them.
In the Vatican II document, Declaration on Religious Freedom, Dignitatis Humanae,
the Church teaches us that religious freedom is a right, not simply a privilege received as
an act of tolerance from a sympathetic government. “The human person has a right to
religious freedom. This freedom means that all men are to be immune from coercion on
the part of individuals or of social groups and of any human power, in such wise that no
one is to be forced to act in a manner contrary to his own beliefs…The right to religious
freedom has its foundation in the very dignity of the human person as this dignity is
known through the revealed word of God and by reason itself.”
Our constitution guarantees that we should not be forced to choose between faithful
citizenship and being faithful to the Gospel. Today, we face more than a theoretical
argument, it is a very real threat, with very real, personal consequences. Our Freedom
of Religion cannot and must not be limited to Freedom of Worship. In their document,
“Our First, Most Cherished Liberty,” the U.S. Bishops wrote: “Religious liberty is not
only about our ability to go to Mass on Sunday or pray the Rosary at home…What is at
stake is whether America will continue to have a free creative, robust civil society—or
whether the state alone will determine who gets to contribute to the common good and
how they get to do it.”
The United States of America has a noble legacy built on its commitment to freedom
as a way of life, not an abstract concept. We call on our fellow Americans of all faiths,
to stand with us, united for the protection of all our earned freedoms so they will be
our legacy to future generations. Freedom of religion springs from all truth that comes
from God, making us a truly free. In the words of our Founding Fathers; “We hold these
truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by our
Creator, certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of
happiness.’ These historic words in the Declaration of Independence make it clear that
our purpose, and our rights as a people come from God.
93rd
Convention
Preview
In August, 250 Catholic Life Insurance members will
gather in San Marcos for the 93rd convention. Elected by
their local Branch, the delegates will meet August 3-4,
2012, at the Embassy Hotel & Conference Center.
“Our biennial conventions are an important part of
Catholic Life’s governing process. As a member-owned
organization, Catholic Life has a representative form of
government,” said President Belz. “Our delegates share
members’ ideas at the convention.”
Branches elect delegates based on
their ability to represent the needs of
their Branch at the convention. The
duties of delegates include accepting
minutes from the last convention,
confirming committee appointments,
and voting on any changes to the
Bylaws of Catholic Life Insurance.
Upon their return, delegates are charged with reporting
the information gathered at the convention to their local
Branch.
During the 93rd convention, delegates will learn of
Catholic Life’s achievements since the last convention.
At the same time, management will outline the goals and
objectives for the organization.
As a Catholic organization, an important part of the
gathering will be the convention Mass. Delegates will take
part in a special Mass offered for the living and deceased
members of Catholic Life.
Proposed Bylaw Changes
Prior to each convention, a Committee is appointed to
review Catholic Life’s Bylaws and determine if there are
any needed changes. This year the committee consists
of representatives from each of Catholic Life’s eight
districts. Werner Halfmann of the Rowena Branch heads
the committee that includes Josephine Moczygemba of
Cestohowa, Jeanette Mooney of Zuehl, Roland De Winne
of San Antonio, Eddie Stolowski of St.
Hedwig, Johnny Martinka of Jarrell,
Robert Grahmann, Jr. of Hallettsville,
Henry Boenisch of Pasadena, Francis
Rucka of Crosby, Frank Janacek of
Weimar and Della Turner of Lindsay.
President J. Michael Belz and current
Chairman Tom Sladecek are ex-officio
members of the committee.
The Committee met in late January and will meet again
prior to the convention. After an in-depth review of
the Bylaws and a review of suggested changes, the
Committee is proposing no changes.
Electing Directors
Delegates are also charged with electing members to the
Board of Directors. At this convention, delegates from
Single Premium Whole Life Is
An Excellent Wealth Transfer Tool.
Are low interest rates hampering
your estate planning strategies?
Are you looking for ways to
increase the nest egg that you
want to leave to your heirs?
There is no doubt that today’s
exceptionally low interest rates
are partially responsible for the
increased attention to Single
Premium Whole Life Insurance.
Catholic Life Insurance has offered a Single Premium Whole
Life Insurance plan for many years. Like all of our life insurance
plans, Single Premium Whole Life Insurance is an excellent
way to secure your family’s future. But in today’s marketplace,
Single Premium Whole Life Insurance has become an
invaluable tool for those individuals who want to increase the
value of their estate.
One popular use for Single Premium Whole Life Insurance is
to buy life insurance on a child. Parents or grandparents can
purchase a permanent life insurance on a child for a onetime
payment at a relatively low premium. For example: a healthy
newborn girl can get $50,000 of whole life insurance coverage
for a single premium of $2,650.00. A healthy boy age 5 can get
$25,000 of whole life insurance coverage for a single premium
of $1,850.00. This is a great value for a relatively small sum.
Wealth transfer is another common use of the single payment
option. This occurs when people have money saved (typically
in bank savings plans, CD’s, etc. or in a deferred annuity) to
that they intend leave to their heirs. By taking this money
and purchasing a Single Premium Whole Life Insurance
certificate, they can substantially increase the value of their
gift. For example: a healthy 62 year old man can purchase life
insurance coverage of $100,000 naming his heirs as beneficiary
for a single premium of $47,150.00. A healthy 72 year old
woman can purchase $125,000 of life insurance coverage for
a single premium of $64,550.00. Best of all, under today’s tax
laws, insurance benefits are paid out on an income tax-free
basis to the beneficiary.
More importantly, Single Premium Whole Life Insurance
builds cash value and cash values can be accessed in case of
an emergency.
money to work for you contact your agent or the Home Office.
Say Cheese!
“Say Cheese” this summer with these four delectable recipes
featuring various types of fromage. From appetizers to desserts,
these recipes are all about the cheese!
Cheese Cake Heaven
3 (8 oz.) packages of cream cheese, softened
2 cups granulated sugar
1½ tsp. vanilla extract
2 (8 oz.) cans refrigerated crescent roll dough
½ cup melted butter or margarine
1½ tsp. ground cinnamon
1 cup pecans (pieces)
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a medium
bowl, beat or hand mix the softened cream
cheese, 1½ cups sugar and the vanilla extract
until smooth. Set aside the unused ½ cup
sugar for later us.
Carefully unroll one can of the refrigerated
crescent dough and press into the bottom of
the greased or sprayed 9 x 13 inch glass or
metal pan, covering the entire pan area trying
to keep the dough from separating. Press back
together any separated seams.
Evenly spread the entire cream cheese mixture
on the dough, spreading the mixture to the
edges of the pan. Cover the cream cheese
mixture with the remaining unrolled sheet of
dough. Press the dough to the edges of the
pan so that all of the cheese cake mixture is
covered. Pour the melted butter evenly over
the top layer of the dough.
In separate small bowl, mix the remaining ½
cup of sugar with the cinnamon. Sprinkle this
mixture evenly over the melted butter, then
top with the pecans pieces.
Bake uncovered on middle rack for
approximately 45 minutes or until the dough
has risen and turned a golden brown.
Cool completely (this will take several hours).
Cut into 1” to 2” squares. Keep refrigerated
until time to serve and refrigerate any
leftovers.
