CREATIVE TEXTILES WITH KAREN SMITH

This course is perfect if you want to develop the skills needed to create homemade crafts, (please be aware this is not
a dressmaking course). Our tutor will cover the following:
Autumn term:
Surface treatments - e.g. stencilling, print block, resist dying and Batik.
A Homemade Christmas workshop - learn how to make soft toys and tree decorations.
Spring term:
Six surfaces to stitch - create a small decorative book by using different techniques including Plyfusion, Tyveck and
Embossing.
Machine Stitching - learn how to use a machine to appliqué and embroider.
Summer term:
Stitch, paper, print, cloth, text and image - create homemade cards.
Felt Making - learn how to make a small handmade felt cushion and felt jewellery.
A materials list will be provided on enrolment.

CAKE DECORATION FOR EVERYONE WITH BERNADETTE YOUNG

On this popular course, you develop the skills to pipe with royal icing and make sugar figures and flowers to a
professional standard that are perfect for decorating celebration cakes for all sorts of occasions. All aspects of
sugarcraft are covered by our tutor, including the latest trends. Students at all levels are welcome as the course covers
beginner to advanced skills. A basic equipment list will be provided before the course starts. Please note materials will
need to be bought each week in order to complete the projects.

LEARN HOW TO SEW
No fee reduction available
Develop confidence in using a sewing machine to create lots of exciting projects including skirts, trousers, simple blouses
and dresses. Utilising a range of sewing stitches learn how to hem, overlock, sew seams, pockets, zips and darts. You
gain an understanding of fabric and how to use it in your project as well as learning to cut from a simple pattern.
You read and follow commercial patterns to construct unique garments working with some independence under the
guidance of the tutor.

CAKE DECORATION FOR IMPROVERS WITH CAROLE RAYNER

This class is suitable for students who have previous experience and who want to improve technique. You will learn how
to decorate cakes for all sorts of occasions from birthdays to weddings and Easter. You will develop the skills needed
to pipe with royal icing, mould sugar paste roses and leaves, make figures and small animals from sugar paste and
decorate a chocolate egg. A basic equipment list will be provided before the course begins. Please note, materials will
need to be bought each week in order to complete the projects.

THE ICING ON THE CAKE
Rebecca, 22, was keen to pursue her dream of someday opening
a cakery while continuing to work full time. She saw the Cake
Decoration course at Shipley College as an opportunity to indulge
in a hobby and learn new skills. Rebecca dates her earliest memory
of baking back to when she was 10 and is as passionate as ever
about her cakes. “I’ve baked for as long as I can remember. For
me it’s a form of escapism, something that I thoroughly enjoy
doing”.
“I’ve definitely improved since September, particularly my floral
work. Bernadette (Cake Decoration for Everyone course tutor) is
very experienced and always on hand to offer her expertise -
I couldn’t recommend this course highly enough”.
A LEARNED EYE
Having spent 33 successful years teaching, Steve, 67, decided to
turn student, enrolling on the Painting with Watercolours course
shortly after retirement.
Steve has attended several courses at Shipley College over the
past four years and says: “It’s a wonderful setting to learn in. I
live locally and so it’s extremely convenient. I started out doing a
Spanish course and have since reignited my interest in developing
my drawing skills, particularly tone, form and colours.”
Steve continues: “Jeremy (tutor) is brilliant, his attention to detail is
magnificent and he has a wonderful rapport with his students.”
