HEALTH & SOCIAL CARE - GENERAL<br />

PREPARING TO WORK IN ADULT SOCIAL CARE BTEC LEVEL 2 CERTIFICATE<br />

Level 2 Entitlement may apply to you<br />

This qualification is aimed at people interested in working in adult social care. You will develop the professional<br />

knowledge, skills and confidence necessary to work in this sector. Topics include: communication, the role of the social<br />

care worker, handling information, health and safety, safeguarding and duty of care. As this is an intensive course which<br />

requires a good level of English, you will undertake an assessment during the first class to confirm your place. You will<br />

need to attend College three days per week, Monday, Wednesday and Friday. After successfully completing this course,<br />

you could progress in to paid or voluntary work in adult social care. If you wish to progress on to the Health & Social<br />

Care Level 2 Diploma, you will need to have recently completed a minimum of 140 hours of work experience and then<br />

maintain a minimum of 14 hours a week during the course.<br />

AWARENESS OF THE MENTAL CAPACITY ACT 2005<br />

Do you support people who at <strong>time</strong>s lack Mental Capacity or are interested in finding out more? If so, this Level 3<br />

qualification is ideal. You gain the knowledge and understanding required to provide support and care to individuals in<br />

accordance with the Mental Capacity Act 2005. You also cover the importance of complying with the Mental Capacity<br />

Act 2005 Code of Practice when working with individuals who lack mental capacity. You will need to have a good level<br />

of English, on the first class you will undertake an assessment to confirm this. Please note, you will attend College on<br />

alternate weeks (term <strong>time</strong> only).<br />

COUNSELLING AIM AWARDS LEVEL 3 CERTIFICATE<br />

Level 3 Entitlement (or 24+ Advanced Learning Loan) may apply to you<br />

On this course you will work towards becoming a reflective practitioner of counselling by considering theories of<br />

human development, self-awareness, supervision and issues of difference and diversity. You cover the three main<br />

core theories and theorists that underpin counselling and address the nature of psychological problems and how they<br />

may be approached. This will ensure you understand the need for a firm grasp of a coherent theoretical approach<br />

to counselling or supporting others. This is particularly important prior to starting work in a supervised placement if<br />

you progress to Level 4. The specialist skills and knowledge gained in this qualification can be applied to a range of<br />

job roles. You will be assessed through the production of an in depth journal, externally set exam, essay and role play.<br />

In order to complete this qualification it is essential that you have a very good level of English. On induction you will<br />

undertake an assessment to confirm this. Please note - this course is not suitable if you have unresolved emotional<br />

issues and it does not qualify you to be a counsellor.<br />

Government funding has changed for this course and is dependent upon your age and personal circumstances.<br />

Therefore, course costs are discussed on an individual basis. If you are aged 24 or over then you may be able to apply<br />

HUMAN HEALTH AND PHYSIOLOGY GCSE<br />

On this course you learn about how the human body works, the structures that make it work and keep it healthy.<br />

You study two units in the areas of data, theories and explanations, practical and enquiry skills and communication<br />

skills as well as some areas of the science used by health professionals working in health and medical care. You may<br />

progress on to Further or Higher education which can lead to future careers in medicine, healthcare and other caring<br />

SUPPORTING INDIVIDUALS ON THE AUTISTIC SPECTRUM LEVEL 3 CERTIFICATE<br />

Do you support people with Autism? This qualification is ideal whether you are working in statutory, private or voluntary<br />

services as the broad range covers a diverse range of job roles and occupational areas providing support to<br />

individuals with autism. You must provide direct support, as observations of you in your workplace supporting individuals<br />

on the Autistic Spectrum will be needed for completion of the course. You will develop your understanding of the<br />

challenges faced by people with autism and learn how to address the individual’s specific needs. As this course requires<br />

a good level of English, you will undertake an assessment during the first class to confirm your place. Please note, you<br />

will attend College on alternate weeks (term <strong>time</strong> only) for the first 8 weeks.<br />

HEALTH & SOCIAL CARE LEVEL 2 DIPLOMA<br />

Level 2 Entitlement may apply to you<br />

This work-based course is the recognised qualification for people working in the health and social care sector. There<br />

are three pathways, Generic, Dementia and Learning Disability. The course covers the skills required by a new care<br />

assistant, or enables a more experienced carer to obtain a qualification. Students must be 18 or over to enrol and you<br />

must have recently completed a minimum of 140 hours of voluntary or paid work experience in a health and social care<br />

setting before starting the course. As this course requires a good level of English, you will undertake an assessment<br />

during the first class to confirm your place. You will need to be working a minimum of 14 hours per week in a health and<br />

social care setting on a voluntary or paid work basis at the start of, and for the duration of, this course, as you will be<br />

assessed in the workplace. We will need to obtain a reference from your employer prior to you starting on the course.<br />

You are expected to remain in the same setting for the length of the course. You will attend College 3 hours a week<br />

for 10 weeks to cover the mandatory units. You will then work one to one with your assessor and it is expected you will<br />

attend weekly workshops on a Wednesday afternoon between 3-5pm. This course can help improve your employment<br />

prospects and enable you to work in a variety of health and social care settings. You may also wish to progress to the<br />
