(For details about the South Centre visit its website www.southcentre.org ) It undertakes policyoriented analytical work on issues of common interest to the countries and peoples of the South. The Centre functions essentially as an intellectually autonomous think-tank. While the Centre is very small and has very limited financial resources at its disposal, its strength is based on networking with institutions and experts in the South. Its political and substantive relevance and importance stems from its mandate to promote South solidarity and consciousness; to promote various types of South-South cooperation and action, links, networking and information exchange; to contribute to efforts to coordinate participation by developing countries in international forums dealing with South-South and North-South matters and to foster convergent views and approaches among countries of the South – with respect to global economic, political and strategic issues related to development, sovereignty, security and in general governance and direction of the international system. The scope of Centre’s work and activities ranges over a broad spectrum. Among other things, it has done work on South-South cooperation, UN reform, financing and development, sustainable development, intellectual property, and international trade, and has produced policy papers and publications on the occasion of major UN conferences, most recently those held in Monterrey on financing for development and in Johannesburg on sustainable development. An area where the Centre has been able to undertake more systematic and sustained activity thanks to the availability of project funding has to do with WTO, trade and development. While the Centre has not as yet initiated a work programme on health-related matters, it has worked in close contact with WHO, especially its Department of Essential Drugs and Medicines Policy, and has issued a number of relevant publications, including joint publications with WHO, most recently a study entitled Protection and Promotion of Traditional Medicine: Implications for Public Health in Developing Countries.
