national scene including Barry Elmes, Pat Collins and Kevin Turcotte.
They inspired not only me but countless others to take the plunge and
purse jazz as a life-long passion.
A year ago, I was perfo rming regularly with the Toronto All-Star
Big Band. I had fo rgotten until I was going through the summer concert
and festival listings just how much this young ensemble plays - all
across the province. It's worth going to hear them (check concert and
festival listings for details), just to prove how hard young musicians
are willing to work to achieve a high level of performance. And the
connections they make will last a lifetime; After singing with TABB,
musical director Jules Estrin invited me to sing with his band -the Top
Brass Orchestra - alongside vocalist John Alcorn (July 6th, Montreal
Bistro). I suppose that's another major milestone for this summer- my
debut at a venue I've always wanted to play.
This issue's club listings are not complete - many clubs do not have
listings for August this far in advance, so wherever possible we have
provided websites so you can keep yourself updated as the summer
progresses. There are so many opportunities to hear great live jazz in
Toronto and across Ontario and Quebec, listed in the magazine thi s
month . In their press release fo r the summer, the Montreal Bistro had
this to say: " ... This city has a wonderful reputation world-wide and
the impending loss of The Top 0 ' The Senator is regrettable, but all
the more reason to make sure you come out and support live performances.
Tell your friends- spread. the good word about this music that
we love."
How true.
This summer there is so much wonderful music to celebrate. I hope
I'll see you and yours out enjoying some of the best music that this city
has to offer! Have a wonderful summer.
