JOhN BuckLANd WRIghT(1897–1954)Buckland Wright was born in New Zealand but waseducated in Britain. From 1925–1939 he worked inBrussels and Paris before returning to England at theoutbreak of war. He worked for the Halcyon Press,Maastricht, from 1929 and for the Golden Cockerel Pressfrom 1936 and is best known as a sublime illustrator.After the war he was an important teacher of engravingtechniques and wrote a seminal book on the subject.The following prints come from JBWs own file copiesand are amongst the first prints JBW made while living inBelgium.1111. EdWARd gORdON cRAIg(1872–1966)33Son of the actress Ellen Terry and the architectEdward Godwin, Edward Gordon Craig beganhis career as an actor. He was introduced to thepossibilities of using engraving to express hisideas for theatre design by William Nicholson.Craig was one of the most innovative of Britishengravers. All his prints are scarce as editionswere rarely completed. Collectors have longbeen fascinated by the Black Figures conceivedby Craig as designs for stage sets and costumesand later incorporated into the Cranach Presseditions of Hamlet printed in English andGerman 1928–30.3433. 7372EdgAR hOLLOWAY(1914–2008)Edgar Holloway was largely self taught. Hestarted etching when he was 15 years old andwas one of the youngest artists to have workaccepted in the national collections. He gaveup etching by 1947 and did not return to ituntil 1969. He is best known for the series ofself portraits spanning over 70 years. He trained at theSlade School of Art and taught art at HighgateSchool from 1944–73 before returning toAnglesey. In addition to painting, KyffinWilliams was a proficient print maker. Thesesix linocuts were bequeathed to GwasgGregynog, the press originally started by theDavies sisters, and have been editioned bythem posthumously and printed by GerardO’Shea on handmade Griffen Mill paper.123.
