<strong>Artistic</strong> <strong>Music</strong> <strong>Director</strong>:<strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Cheri</strong> <strong>Collins</strong><strong>Cheri</strong> <strong>Collins</strong>, D.A., graduated from the Manhattan School of<strong>Music</strong> in New York City, where she earned a Bachelor ofPerformance on Violin. While attending the Manhattan School of<strong>Music</strong> on full scholarship, she was one of two freshmen violinistschosen that year to study with the Russian-born violin professor,Raphael Bronstein. While attending the Manhattan School, sheperformed with the Manhattan Contemporary ChamberSymposium, which debuted new compositions at Alice Tully Halland Carnegie Hall.After graduation, <strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Collins</strong> worked in São Paulo, Brazil, playingfirst violin in the São Paulo Symphony. <strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Collins</strong> played firstviolin with the Florida Orchestra in Tampa, Florida from 1978 to1984, and then moved to Northern Virginia to begin a varied andsuccessful freelance career. Some highlights of her freelanceyears include performances with the American ChamberOrchestra, Baltimore Opera, and the National SymphonyOrchestra.From 1990 to the present, <strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Collins</strong>’ career has been focused onher passion for teaching. Since joining Fairfax County PublicSchools, she completed a Masters in Conducting and a Doctor ofArts degree in Higher Education and Violin Performance, fromGeorge Mason University. <strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Collins</strong>’ orchestras received“Superior” ratings in District XII Orchestra Festivals. Herorchestra received the “MegaFest Award” for the highest-scoringorchestra over nine weekends, in the 1998 Virginia Beach andToronto MegaFests, sponsored by North America <strong>Music</strong>Festivals. In 1999 and 2005 her Rocky Run Middle Schoolorchestra received recognition for the “Outstanding Performanceby a Middle School Orchestra” from the Virginia <strong>Music</strong>Educators Association. Under her guidance, Oakton HighSchool’s Chamber Orchestra was invited to the 2008 <strong>Music</strong> forAll National America Orchestra Festival; performing at theHilbert Circle Theatre in Indianapolis. The following year, theyperformed in the National Orchestra Festival in Atlanta, Georgia,sponsored by the American String Teachers Association. June,2012, <strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Collins</strong> concluded her nine years as conductor for theAmerican <strong>Youth</strong> String Ensemble, so she could join TCSYO as<strong>Artistic</strong> <strong>Music</strong> <strong>Director</strong>/Principal Conductor.<strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Collins</strong> is in great demand as a string clinician and adjudicator,to demonstrate her dissertation topic, which is the physics of toneproduction.

TCSYO Chamber Orchestrais open to students ranging in age from 10 to 16from both public and private schools who havehad at least two years of private instruction ontheir instrument and play at (VBODA) GradeLevel III and above. <strong>Artistic</strong> <strong>Music</strong> <strong>Director</strong>, <strong>Dr</strong>.<strong>Cheri</strong> <strong>Collins</strong> teaches a fun and enrichingcurriculum for string orchestra (Violin, Viola,Cello, Bass and Harp). Dedicated professionalmusicians from the greater Washington, DCarea will provide sectionals and share theirexpertise with students. Leadership skills will befostered to encourage students to enhance theirschool strings program.
