12By: Namra JavedIM-06/ S.EDear friend,As you got up this morning, I watched you andhoped you would talk to me, even if it was just afew words, asking my opinion or thanking me forsomething good that happened in your lifeyesterday, but i noticed you were so busy try tofinding the right outfit to put on for to work. I,when you ran around the house getting ready, Iknew there would be a few minutes for you tostop and say hello, but you were too busy. At onepoint you had to wait 15 minutes with nothing todo except sit in a chair. Then I saw you spring toyour feet. I thought you wanted to talk to me butyou ran to the phone and called a friend to get thelatest gossip. I watched as you went to work and Iwaited patiently all day long. With all youractivities I guess you were too busy to sayanything to me. I noticed that before lunch youlooked around, maybe you felt embarrassed totalk to me. That is why you didn't bow your headglanced 3 to 4 tables over and you noticed someof your friends talking to me briefly before theyate, but you didn't. That's okay. There is still moretime left, and I hope that you talk to me yet. Youwent home and it seemed you had lots of thingsto do. after a few of them are done you turned onthe TV, I didn't know if you liked TV or not, justabout anything goes there and you spend a lot oftime each day in front of it, not thinking aboutanything---just enjoying the show. I waitedpatiently again as you watched the TV and ateyour meal but again didn't talk to me...bedtime Iguess you felt too tired. After you said goodnightto your family plopped onto bed and fell asleep inno time. That's okay because you may not realizethat I m always there for you. I've got patiencemore than you will ever know. I even want toteach you how to be patient with others as well. Ilove you so much that I wait everyday for a nod, prayer, or thought or a thankful part of yourHerat. It is hard to have one-sided conversation.Well, you are getting up again and once again Iwill wait with nothing but love for you hoping thatyou will give me some time. Khalid Bin Waleed PersonalQualities:Best Horse Rider:Khalid bin Waleed belongs to the warrior family ofBani Makhzum which was responsible for mattersof war. They trained the horses on which theQuraish rode to war and provided the officers tolead Quraish groups into battle. This role of theBani Makhzum set the atmosphere in which Khalidwas to grow up. As a Makhzumi he was taught toride on horse and soon acquired mastery over theart of horsemanship .He had the ability to ride anyhorse and not only trained horse. The BaniMakhzum were among the best horsemen ofArabia, and Khalid became one of the besthorsemen of the Bani Makhzum.Fulfilled and Expertise with Art of Wars:Besides riding, Khalid also learned the skills ofcombat. He learned to use all weapons-the spear, the lance, the bow and the sword. The ones forwhich he appears to have had a natural gift werethe lance, used while charging on horseback, andthe sword for mounted and dismounted dueling. As a wrestler, he climbed high on the ladder ofachievement, combining consummate skill withenormous strength.this was conveyed to Khalid, it changed his heartand suddenly he began to see the light of truth. After the entrance in Islam, Khalid bin Walidbecame the foremost champion of Islam. Hefought many decisive battles, humbling hisopponents and bringing victory to Islam. He wasthe first Muslim commander to leave Arabia toconquer foreign lands and humble two greatempires. The Holy Prophet (Pbuh) once said,“Khalidisoneoftheswordsof<strong>Al</strong>lahwhichhehasThus, it was that Khalid bin Waleed came to beknown as ‘Saifullah’ or the “Sword of <strong>Al</strong>lah,”usedagainsttheunbelievers.”Last Moments of Great Conqueror ofIslam:Sometime in 642 (21 Hijri), at the age of 58, Khalidwas taken ill. This last illness proved too much forhim; and Khalid's sick bed became his death bed.A few days before his end, an old friend came tosee him and sat at beside him. 16hardly to be found in class or if unfortunately theyhave to take a lecture it’s just till the time ofattendance after that they vanish.I must say bunkers are very hardworking… theyneed to work on many tricks so as to leave theclass or to excuse the teachers or slip from theback door… they need to make sure they arelooking perfectly cool… oh man they surely arehard workers..Guys are to b found with cigarettes in theirhands… smoking with pride and trying their bestto look great whenever a girl is around… where asgirls might not be smoking but they keepthemselves tip top and up to the mark so as to bethe center of attraction and make the surroundinggirls jealous.Canteens are running on the mercy of thesestudents… bunking is the right activity to showhow cool you are that you don’t care what are youmissing by not taking classes… and bunking justfor the sake that the time won’t ever return solet’s party..So much work they have to do… how busybunkers are... that even they don’t have the timeto think about their future, about their exams. Abunker differs in the manner from a commonstudent that he/she thinks of the present time anduse it in making memories and a normal studentswill use the present time to make his/her futureThese are the students, which on the time ofpaper have no idea what the class whole year hasbeen going through… if I am right, when asked, they don’t even remember their subjects on theirfinger tips…These are the student that collectively affect thefuture of our country because may be they are soinnocent that they don’t know that smoking willone day bring misery to them… these are thestudents that hardly have any idea that how theirparents join each penny so that they may havecomfort… but they don’t believe in comfort… theybelieve in luxuries.. And those who are alreadyblessed with the joy of money, they are neverprepared for a rainy day in the life ahead.<strong>Al</strong>l these people have no idea that how intenselyother students might feel the absence of theseluxuries in his/her life…So... to put it in a nut shell let’s not bunk, let’s notwaste money, let’s not make any one feelunfortunate and lets study… may be this can leadto a new and better country.New Nedian's To Ned’sSphere - PoemBy: SM Waqas ImamIM-101 / T.EWelcome young people to N.E.D’s sphereDelightful atmosphere you will find hereFear of ragging will always be thereBut the way done here you will find mereEverything looks strange but few days moreStrangeness will perish like a soreTeachers will be there to help you outBut this is just expression big with cloutYour nervousness will be there for bit timeIt will just disappear like a rimeThe canteens, libraries and common roomAre waiting for you to bunk and boomRivalries in book bank and lust for books<strong>Al</strong>l these attempts are useless rooksSponsorship programs are lively trendsDevelopments going on are historical mendsCorridors and classes are uttering with careWelcome new Nedian's to N.E.D’s sphereExamania!By: Umair IqbalIM-100/ T.ELife seems to go quite smooth and relaxed as thenew session begins in the university. Boys usuallydangle around in groups from one corridor intothe other or simply invigorate themselves bysitting in the cafeteria pulling each other's socksby passing comments; puffing cigarette; listeningto music; bunking classes or doing some sort ofwork out in the gym. In simple words, they enjoyeach and every moment of life. There is no burden

or a sort of headache from the studies, atleast notbefore the summer vacations. But after summer vacations, the winds start toblow from the contrary direction. The scenariochanges drastically. Sessional vivas, test and finalpresentation compel the student to get down tostudies again. But this compulsion seems to be invain as most of the students intend to study justfor one month before the examination. When thelecture copies are opened, these students thenrealize that their work is incomplete, and that iswhy, a hell of rush can be seen at the photocopyshop. Furthermore, to understand the core pointsof the lecture, combine studies are arranged ateach other's home or even in the university. Thus, the preparation is done, and almost all thestudents manage to pass the examination.Regarding examination, an incident will alwaysknock at my memory………the one which almostthe majority of the students (belonging to 2006-2007 batch) would have experienced in solidmechanics I paper. As soon as the paper wasdistributed in the class, the atmosphere of theclass changed. At least for the initial half n hour, the students were merely glaring at each otherwith a big question mark on their faces. They wereflabbergasted and anxiety was prevailing overthem. Actually the paper was quite difficult andunexpected and the students were not mentallyprepared for it. But some how the studentsmanaged to attempt the paper, and the situationwas remarkably tackled by our chairman and thefaculty members. And in the end, the students gotthe benefit. Thus, exams in <strong>NED</strong> are like monsoon period, itcomes and passes away. The new session beginsand the cycle is repeated once again….How Difficult is to leave <strong>NED</strong>By: Sumaiyah MurtazaIM-82/ B.EIt’s a part of human nature that one always getsattracted by the thing that isn’t very muchaccessible or within scope apart from valuing thegems you have already been provided with!!!!The picture is still there, somewhere in the hindcell of my brain, when I was striving for acaretaker to feed me in terms of knowledge andsurely to up bring me in terms of behavior. Anddestiny chose for me “<strong>NED</strong>”.<strong>Al</strong>though it seemed intensely difficult toaccommodate within this all new world where Ihad just opened my eyes, yet there were hopes.Getting back home @ 5 pm having burdens inmind for homework and engaged SUNDAYS, mademe restless. At that moment it clicked in mind that“how could I pass this span?” IT’S A HARD NUT TOCRACK…… And off course a question that hasalways pinched me that “HOW DIFFICULT IS TOLEAVE <strong>NED</strong>?”TODAY after a bit long, knowledgeable & offcourse tough voyage I am standing at anotheredge, where this <strong>NED</strong> is no more a change, ratherit’s a routine. But <strong>Al</strong>as! Time is now alerting me foranother new big change. It’s near when myagreement with my caretaker is going to expire.Oh no! I am not at all prepared to leave myfriends. As for sure I will be missing the fascinatingdepartment building. How would I be able to flushaway memories of those sites where I used to sitalong with my friends being on bunk, andcompleting assignments at the eleventh hour…. Icould never find a gathering place like “Mechcorner” where we planned for timeouts and funget-togethers.How could I imagine forgetting thejourney right to the university within “<strong>NED</strong>SHUTTLES”, where I felt an emotion ofassociability? People looking at with theirbewildered faces pumped me up with a feel ofpride. There is a lot more to say, to write & off course tofeel but it is not possible to share that all.Today I am having the same question but themeanings are totally inverted. The question todayis equally pinching but don’t know how to resolvethis issue ……there is a request to all <strong>NED</strong>IANS ….Do avail your chance… <strong>NED</strong> is a very rewardinginstitution….the feelings that exists are off courseambivalent….. At one corner the pleasure ofachievement & at the other end that very popularquestion that“HOW DIFFICULT IS TO LEAVE <strong>NED</strong>????”“HOW DIFFICULT IS TO LEAVE <strong>NED</strong>????”17

18Life of a BackbencherBy: Syed Ainul HasanIM-79 / T.EWHO is a backbencher? A backbencher is anundeclared criminal of a class. No concern whatthe issue is. A backbencher is always declaredguilty of being involved. His day starts with a fearof being late in the class. He jumps of his bed; notbecause he’s gone to miss the lecture as usual buthe doesn’t want to miss the fun. Before enteringclass he makes sure that he is not noticed by theteacher courtesy his mates. The situation isfavorable for entering if the teacher is writingsomething on the board. If he finds secondcondition to be true he rushes into the class like arat running from a cat ; with a brave smile on hisface. And now the fun begins…..Some of the students are born backbenchers. They feel very uncomfortable on the front seats. They are in so much agony if they are seated inthe front. That is why they are the most primetarget of teachers, in case of any disturbance inthe class. Some of them are also extreme jester.By the grace of God we also have some ultimate inour class. I shall no unveil the talent of my classi.e. T.E IM (B). Our back bencher’s possess someoutstanding qualities like laziness, foolishness, puerility, inelegancy and last but not the least ourkey feature is our impudency. We are also absurd.Amongst us are some blabber mouths. We calleach other by our own metaphorical names. Dueto some moral values I can’t disclose them. But aclue is enough for a wise. A friend of mine;recently became a backbencher (pilot) is a verystrange fellow. What he did is he tried to befamous over night. He made a paper plane duringclass & flew it. Accidently the plane crashed on agirl’s shoulder. Worst, noticed by the teacher atthe same time. <strong>Al</strong>l of his dreams ended in smoke.Besides being cheered by his fellow students forsuch a gag he was disgraced by the chairman.Moral: never try to snatch fame over night.Advise: better work on it first & then execute it atthe right time, at the right place. We usually waste our time in the class byintriguing so as how to cut a joke, in order todivert the attentions away from the studies. Andin case caught! we know well how to make aescape goat out of others. We also indulge our selfin physical activities by beating each other likewild animals. As far as studies are concerned theyare kept safe for the eleventh hour! According toour keen observation 80% of the students attendclasses for attendance. Who cares the hell aboutrest of the 20%!!! Our attitude in class reflects ourinner self i.e. we attend the classes solely forattendance. If the teacher is teaching, it’s none ofour business. He/she gets paid for that ☺ if therewould have been no restriction of 75% attendancethen majority wouldn’t attend the class. Andthat’s the bottom line. Finally, to our critics; if we began to study then wecertainly get good marks or in worst casepositions, than what will the infected book wormsdo???? Every positive has a negative; let us whatwe are. Lastly I would request to the teachers thatevery time we are not the defaulters please don’twaste time on us by exhorting us all the time. Please remember a phrase for us “what is bred inthe bone will never come out of the flesh”.Life in N.E.D - PoemBy: SM Waqas ImamIM-101 / T.ELife in N.E.D is full of charmWe are just like crops in farmStudent species of varying attributeSome are talkative and others are muteThis life is packed with classes plannedBut students bunk for fun and bandNoting lectures rather sometimes dictationsStudents fed up facing such occasionsGetting handouts cost exhaustionThere is no other way to avoid this situationSessional marks show teachers a gateTo let rowdy behavior fadeThe break for prayers and recess timeVery few use it to become sublimeMaking friend is a common gameMany socials have one thing sameThis all my analysis for uni lifeIs just an attempt to show our hike.

By: Mohammad Umair KhanzadaIM-27/ B.ESome form of Enterprise Risk Management (ERM)has always been practiced by managers, whenthey have tried to identify and manage this risksthat are faced by their organizations. Suchmanagement of risks is done through transfer ofrisks to insurers or reinsurers, and also throughplanning for contingencies and crisis. However, inrecent years, organizations have started toconsider risks in a more holistic, organization-widemanner, and to elevate risk management to asenior management responsibility. What is ERM?Enterprise Risk Management is defined as aprocess which is put in place: firstly, to identifypotential risks that can affect an organization; andsecondly, to manage this risk to ensure that theyremain within its risk appetite. The goal of the process is to have reasonableassurance that the organization’s objectives canbe achieved. The process should be applied bothin strategy setting and cross the enterprise. The following are some of the trends which areleading to an evolution in ERM practice:New and more complicated risks are emerging, such as foreign exchange risk, due to growingglobalization, advances in technology andincreasing sophistication in financial markets.Recent high profile cases, such as Barings Bankand Enron, are motivating rating agencies, regulators and lenders to insist that seniormanagement take more responsibility formanaging risks on an enterprise-wide scale.Developments in financial and managementtheory are a leading to an increasing awareness ofthe interactions of many risks, and the realizationthat such risks must be managed with the totalorganization in view.Advances in research and computing power havemade quantification of risks easier, and enabledorganizations to more easily analyze “what if”scenarios.Organizations are increasingly recognizing thatrisks can also be a source of opportunity, and thatcertain risks can be kept and actively pursuedbecause of confidence in the management’sability to exploit such risks.BENEFITS:Applying the ERM process will result in thefollowing benefits for an organization:The organization’s risk appetite is explicitlyconsidered when business strategies andcorporate objectives are analyzed. The organization is better able to identify andselect the best response for a risk – whether toavoid, reduce, share or accept. The organization gains enhanced capability toidentify potential events and establish responses. This will reduce “surprises” and associated costsor losses. The organization is able to develop integrated andeffective responses to inter-related risks whichaffect different parts of the organization.By considering the full range of potential events, the organization is better able to identify andseize opportunities. The organization is more effectively able to assessthe overall capital needs and enhance capitalallocation cross the business. In summary, “enterprise risk management helpsan entity to get to where it wants to go and avoidpitfalls and surprises along the way”.PROCESS STEPS:A summary of the steps which are taken by anorganization to implement an enterprise riskmanagement process are described below:Establish Context – This step includes defining therelationship of the enterprise with itsenvironment, including identification of theenterprise’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (“SWOT Analysis”); gaining anunderstanding of the overall objectives, strategiesand key performance indicators of the21

22organization; indentifying the risk categories ofrelevance to the enterprise.Identify Risks – This step involves documentingthe conditions and events (including “extremeevents”) that represent material threats to theorganization’s achievement of its objectives orrepresent areas to exploit for competitiveadvantage.Analyze/Quantify Risks – This step involvescreating and calibrating probability distributions ofoutcomes for each material risk.Integrate Risks – This step involves combining riskdistributions (to reflect inter-relationshipsbetween risks), and expressing the results in termsof the impact on the enterprise’s key performanceindicators.Assess/Prioritize Risks – This step involvesdetermining the contribution of each risk to theaggregate risk of the organization, and prioritizingaccordingly, so that decisions can be made as tothe appropriate treatment of the risks.Treat/Exploit Risks – This step involves decidingwhether to avoid, retain, reduce, transfer, orexploit risk.Monitor& Review – This step involves continualgauging of the risk environment and theperformance of the risk management strategies. The results of the ongoing reviews are fed backinto the context-setting step and the cyclerepeats. The Basics of ProductionInventory ManagementBy: Tauseef IqbalIM-81/ B.EProduction inventory management differs fromgeneral warehouse management because itinvolves the determination of how quickly toproduce a particular product. The factors involvedin many cases are similar, though there are somevariances in making the final decision as to howquickly manufacturing should push items throughthe production line.Available MaterialsOf course, the first concern in productioninventory management is on the front end of theprocess. If you don’t have the materials requiredfor production, then you can’t move forward inproviding the products to others. You must makecertain that you have all the supplies you need, from raw materials to factory workers, tocomplete the production process.Supply and DemandYou must determine the current demand for theproduct on the market. Good productioninventory management occurs when you producejust enough material to satisfy customers’ needswithout overextending the production line andmanufacturing too many of any given product. You don’t want an incredible amount of backstock lying around, as this detracts from your netprofit. On the other hand, you don’t want to be inshort supply when a large order comes in, sohaving a little extra on hand is a great idea, andmaking sure you are prepared to make aproduction run for such orders is vital.Quality ControlNever simply assume that everythingmanufactured will be flawless. An importantconsideration in production inventorymanagement is to allow room for error. In otherwords, calculate a sufficient amount of product toassume that, even with flaws that get past qualitycontrol efforts, there is sufficient stock of theproduct required.Cost AnalysisIn many instances, even the best productioninventory management strategies fail in the longrun due to the cost of the production processbeing overlooked as a factor. It is important tomaintain a cost effective production process, andthis includes making sure that your inventory isnot an overwhelming factor. This comes back tonot overproducing any items that come off theassembly lines. Doing so is a waste of time andmaterials, costing you excess money to create.Obviously, conservation of the materials, time, and energy consumed in manufacturingunnecessary goods is essential to maintaining acost effective production inventory managementstrategy.

Be proactive in keeping close watch on alloccurrences in your production or manufacturingfacility to make sure that there is no waste, andyou are guaranteed to achieve a greater standardof success and profitability.Total Quality ManagementBy: <strong>Al</strong>eem-ur-Rehman BaigIM-59/BETotal Quality Management (TQM) is a set ofmanagement practices throughout theorganization, geared to ensure the organizationconsistently meets or exceeds customerrequirements. TQM places strong focus onprocess measurement and controls as means ofcontinuous improvement. It can be viewed as anorganization wide approach that focuses onproducing high quality goods and services. TQM,when properly used, is an integral part of anorganization, not a separate, stand-aloneprogram, and it encompasses all of the functionalareas and levels within the organization, includingsuppliers.TQM requires that the company maintain thisquality standard in all aspects of its business. Thisrequires ensuring that things are done right thefirst time and that defects and waste areeliminated from operations.Elements of TQM:Top management can demonstrate itscommitment to a TQM program in several ways. These include incorporating TQM in to the firm’soverall strategy and demonstrating by actions aswell as by words that quality is the number oneoperating priority of the organization.EmployeeEmployeeinvolvement.involvement isanother critical element in successfullyimplementing a TQM program. By involving allemployees in the decision-making process, management is able to receive inputs from thosenearest the problems and in the best position torecommend viable solutions. Employeeinvolvement, which appears to be prevalent inmost word-class operations, also takes advantageof the skills and knowledge of all employees.A key element in employee involvement is thateach worker assumes the responsibility forinspecting the quality of his or her own work. Thisis referred to as quality at the source and extendsbeyond the worker to include the work group, alldepartments, and the suppliers of parts andservices to the organization. This view changes theoften-adversarial practice of having a QCinspector, typically from the QC department, making decisions about good or bad quality.excellence. Product/processProduct/processexcellent involves the quality of the product’sdesign and analysis of field failures. It also includesstatistical process control (SPC) and otheranalytical tools.23There are four primary elements that are integralto every successful TQM program: leadership, employee involvement, product/processexcellence, and customer focus. The(a) (d) (c) (b) Leadership.leadership provided by anorganization’s management is a majorcornerstone in the development andimplementation of successful TQM program. When properly executed, a TQM program iscompany wide, transcends the traditionalfunctional areas, and involves all of the firm’semployees. It therefore requires vision, planning, and communication, all of which are theresponsibility of top management. Studies haveincluded that total commitment frommanagement is considered to be critical elementin successfully implementing such programs.Process control is concerned with monitoringquality while the product is being produced or theservice is being performed. Typical objectives ofprocess control plans are to provide timelyinformation on whether currently produced itemsmeeting design specifications and to detect shiftsin the process that signal that future products maynot meet the customer’s requirements. The actualcontrol phase of process control occurs whencorrective action is taken. An underlying philosophy in achieving product/process excellence is the concept of continuousimprovement. This has a general meaning as wellas a specific TQM meaning. Its general meaning isan ongoing effort to improve in every part of theorganization and all of its outputs. It’s morespecific meaning focuses on continual

24improvement in the processes by which workaccomplished. In Japanese companies, the concept kaizen.of continuousimprovement is referred to as It can beinterpreted to mean s systematic approach toeliminating errors and improving the quality of theproduct that is delivered to the customer. One ofthe ways kaizen is achieved is through the use ofpoka-yoke or fool proofing in the methods thatare used to make the products.TheCustomerfocus.customer’s perception ofquality must be taken into account in settingacceptable quality levels. In other words, aproduct isn’t reliable unless the customer says it’sreliable and service is not fast unless the customersays it’s fast. Translating customers’ qualitydemands into specifications requires marketing(or product development) to develop a product(or service) that can be produced to consistentlyachieve that desired level of quality. The quality ofa product or service may be defined by the qualityof its design (product quality) and the quality of itsconformance to that design (process quality).Design quality refers to the inherent value of theproduct in the marketplace and is thus a strategicdecision for the firm. Conformance quality refersto the degree to which the product or servicemeets design specifications. It should be evidentthat a product or service can have high designquality but low conformance quality, and viceversa. Both design quality and conformance qualityshould provide products that meet the customer’sobjectives for those products. This is often termedthe product’s fitness for use, and it entailsidentifying those dimensions of the product (orservice) that the customer wants and developing aquality control program to ensure that thesedimensions are met.Implementing TQM:Companies have adopted several approaches toimplementing TQM. However, only when quality istotally integrated into the day-to-day operationsof the firm can a TQM program be truly successful. The implementation of a successfully qualityprogram throughout an organization is not asimple undertaking. The two major causes for theinability of firms to successfully adopt anorganization wide quality program: “lack of focuson strategic planning and core competencies, andobsolete, outdated cultures.”In addition to these two underlying causes, companies have identified other obstacles like, lack of companywide definition of quality, lack offormalized strategic plan for change, lack of acustomer focus, poor inter-organizationalcommunication, lack of real employeeempowerment, lack of employee trust in seniormanagement, politics and turf issues etc, thatneed to be addressed if a quality program is to betruly successful within organization.ENGINEERING SUMMARY1. By: Numra JavedIM-06/S.EI was going back to home from university bus wasmoving with the usual speed. I thought that todaywas another worst and tiring day of my life as Iwas having another bad test instead of sitting withthe most genius gal of my class. I was lost in mythoughts. Suddenly bus stopped, a man got intothe bus and tried to get the attention having hadsome dry fruits and some other small things (Icould not observe) in his hands wanted people tobuy these packets. However, people were busy inlooking through window, reading newspaper andgossiping with friends. The man tried his level bestbut to no avail. After all, he left the bus. From the next stop, a man entered the bus, started struggling to get passengers consideration, commenced explaining his painful life andfinancial condition of his house, and within nolong time he had made people giving him charity. He collected and got down.Having observed all I was unable to think why andhow long will it be happening that people whowant to earn money by hard working will berejected and ignored and beggars will beappreciated and granted. in this way aren't wepromoting beggary in our society and showingpeople the way of collecting money by asking. When will we understand this bitter fact of oursociety? its only the matter of thinking, beforetoday, I observed this many times in a day butcouldn't make myself to think on this matter, onlytoday I thought about this as I was very hurtbecause of my genius friend who didn't help me inthe test, I didn't prepare for test but wanted tohave good test without any toil. I felt similaritybetween him and me. I felt shame. but at thesame time I also felt similarity with that man whotried people to buy the packets but he was totallyignored...and today I was ignored by my friend, that man was doing right and I was wrong but thefeeling was same. It’s too bad feeling, I felt! However, I learnt from this man, to never stophard work, I decided that from now onwards I’llstart studying instead of depending on my geniusfriend. In this way, I will be independent having nofear of ignoring in tests by her. And I decided notto ignore these hard working people, whoseearnings totally depend on us.Please try to understand and tell others topurchase even unnecessary things likenewspapers, toffees, books etc except giving 1 or2 rupees to professional beggars. Have a step; wemight be the people to set a new trend in ourcountry. However, before this all, you will haveto think and have decisions. So hurry up, what areyou waiting for?PHILANTHROPY - EmergingSavior of our SocietyBy: Sumayya Gohar AsadIM-46/ F.EWhen one ponders over the possibilities, whichcould ease the straits our society lies in, theemerging trend of philanthropy. Philanthropistsare lovers of mankind, benevolent contributorsand ever willing to assist any one in need.An overview of the dire indicators of ourthreatening social scenario shows us the hazardswe will have to courageously counter in the nearfuture. According to a UN report, Pakistan isranked at 140th position out of 155 membercountries; and out of 175 countries of the world, takes 155th position in literacy. Traffic problemsare on the rise with each passing day. Inflation ispressing on the principle that "Sky is not theLimit". Politics are disintegrating into "poly-ticks "and more and more loans are traveling from othernations in Pakistan. The not-so-privileged folks aredenied the basic necessities of life because thosebasic necessities prove to be a luxury for them. The emerging trend of philanthropy seems theultimate cure for the sorry scenario that we arefacing. People are getting the idea thatphilanthropy is the best possible solution for allour dilemmas and that fact really stands true.More and more people are entering this arenawhere they can be of maximum assistance to thepeople around them. These people are the truebeneficiaries and helpers of the common folk witha desire to see the folk progressing at all walks oflife. Gamaliel Bailey, an author, said “Neverrespect men merely for their riches; but rather fortheir philanthropy. We do not value the sun for itsheight in the sky but for its use.”Take the example of our various national heroeswho are setting the path for us to follow. Edhi, who is serving the nation, since time immemorial.Imran Khan who set up the Cancer Hospital27

28providing cancer treatment, free of cost inmajority of the cases, to thousands of people. Thehospital requires 400 million in a year, with themajor share of it being covered by donations.Abrar ul Haq is setting up his own hospital, theSughra Shafi Hospital, at Narowal. The projectrequires around 80 million but the will beingthere, we hope that he will accomplish the projectwith success (Amen). Then there is Jawad Ahmed, with his "Taleem For <strong>Al</strong>l" program and many moreworth mentioning.Various organizations are being set up to pursuethis mission of philanthropy namely PCP (PakistanCenter for Philanthropy) set up at Islamabad witha mission to enhance the volume andeffectiveness of philanthropy in Pakistan byfacilitating collaboration between the variousstakeholders. Other than governmental setups, responsive community-based philanthropyorganizations are bent on improving the society’sfuture at all costs. These non-profit organizationsare making their presence felt with the passage oftime. The Citizen’s Foundation, which is workingto deliver quality education to underprivilegedchildren, is an example worth mentioning. The Government of Pakistan has at many a time, appealed for assistance from the common folkand they have replied with enthusiasm and vigor.According to a survey, in 1998 alone, approximately 50 per cent of Pakistani individualsgave an estimated total of Rs 770 billion (or 2.2per cent of GNP) in money, goods and voluntarytime. Other than our nationals, the expatriatePakistanis are also playing a major role, setting uporganizations like UFP (United Fund for Pakistan)and DIL (Development in Literacy) andcontributing generously to our localphilanthropists (Edhi Foundation receives fundsfrom around 13 countries).Fostering the expansion and development ofphilanthropic action will require continuous andvigorous attention. People in our society needurgent help, regarding all walks of life, and theones who have the abilities, resources and powerto spread this aura of philanthropy around, shouldby all means practice this philosophy withoutmore thinking.Global Warming… A SeriousIssue.By: Noor ShafaqIM-104/ T.ETemperature, wind, climate, and level of sea ischanging day by day. Floods, tsunamis and earthquakes are destroying our world. Many species ofplants and animal are getting extinct... Why??The answer leads us to global warming...What is Global Warming?Global warming and climate change refer to anincrease in average global temperatures. Globalwarming is the new global menace where theworld must come together in order to avert aglobal catastrophe.Effects of Life Style on Global Warming:Nearly half of all people now live in cities; anincreasing number of them travel enormousdistances every year by private car and in aircraft. In the developed world, technology hastransformed patterns of work and family life, communications, leisure activities, diet andhealth. Similar transformations are under way inthe more prosperous parts of the developingworld. The impacts of these changes on thenatural environment are complex.Numbers of motor vehicles (millions)The number of vehicles is growing fast in allregions. Transport now accounts for onequarterof world energy use, and about onehalfof the world's oil production; motorvehicles account for nearly 80 per cent of alltransport-related energy. Transport is thus amajor contributor to greenhouse gas emissionsand urban air pollution

An Outlook on Immense Loss Due toGlobal Warming:The world water cycle seems unlikely to be able tocope with the demands that will be made of it inthe coming decades.Land degradation has reduced fertility andagricultural potential. These losses have negatedmany of the advances made through expandingagricultural areas and increasing productivity.Tropical forest destruction has gone too far toprevent irreversible damage. It would take manygenerations to replace the lost forests, and thecultures that have been lost with them can neverbe replaced. Many of the planet's species have already beenlost or condemned to extinction because of theslow response times of both the environment andpolicy-makers; it is too late to preserve all thebiodiversity our planet once had. Many marine fisheries have been grossly overexploited, and their recovery will be slow.More than half of the world's coral reefs arethreatened by human activities. While some mayyet be saved, it is too late for many others.Urban air pollution problems are reaching crisisdimensions in many of the mega cities of thedeveloping world, and the health of many urbandwellers has been impaired. It is probably too late to prevent global warmingas a result of increased greenhouse gas emissions;in addition, many of the targets agreed on in theKyoto Protocol may not be met.Reasons behind Getting in Such Position:In terms of historical emissions, industrializedcountries account for around 80% of the carbondioxide buildup in the atmosphere to date. Since1950, the US has emitted a cumulative total ofroughly 50.7 billion tons of carbon, while China(4.6 times more populous) and India (3.5 timesmore populous) have emitted only 15.7 and 4.2billion tons respectively. Annually, more than 60%of global industrial carbon dioxide emissionsoriginate in industrialized countries, where onlyabout 20% of the world’s population resides. The modern industrial economies of NorthAmerica, Europe and parts of East Asia consumeimmense quantities of energy and raw materials, and produce high volumes of wastes and pollutingemissions. The magnitude of this economicactivity is causing environmental damage on aglobal scale and widespread pollution anddisruption of ecosystems.Global Polluters (2004)By Carbon dioxide emissions through humanactivities as a percentage of total emissions:1. USA 22%2. China 18%3. Russia 5%4. India 4.9%5. Japan 4.6%6. Germany 3.1%7. Canada 2.3%8. UK 2.2%9. South Korea 1.7%10. Italy 1.6%Role of United Nations:The largest body dealing with climate change isthe UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on ClimateChange (IPCC) where its climate scientists havereleased a number of reports detailing theprogress in understanding climate change.Role of U.S.:US have obstructed International deal:Much of the growth in emissions in the developedworld stem from rapid industrialization from theindustrial revolution era. The US with its $14trillion economy is the world’s largest polluter andhas acted as an obstacle to any agreement onemission reduction targets. This is because the USis unable to decouple economic growth from itshuge energy use. In other words, economicgrowth needs to be protected and any agreementon emission reduction would affect economicgrowth as industry would be restricted on theamount it can pollute the air. Hence the largest29

30polluter of all the US has announced its ownconference in tackling climate change which willprotect US industry and it was the US’s insistenceon not agreeing reduction targets that led to thecollapse of the Kyoto Protocol – an internationaltreaty. The US is not prepared to enter any dealwhich requires it to cut its consumption levels. This is why instead of calling for a radical cutbackin automobile use the US accepts that the numberof motor vehicles will double. It proposes toexpand production and accelerate development ofnon-fossil fuel alternatives for future cars such assynthetic bio fuels and carbon dioxide-freehydrogen.Capitalism at the centre of the problem:Reducing emissions would mean industry in theWest would need to produce less – this wouldlead to the economies of the West to shrink ratherthen grow. To reduce consumption is consideredShirk in Capitalism. By the same token, the rate ofconsumption of fossil fuels in developed countriesis also extremely high relative to the rest of theworld. The depletion of non-renewable resourcesand environmental destruction is primarily causedby the consumption patterns of such nations.Global warming is the result of rapidindustrialization from the West with the soleconcern of profit making. <strong>Al</strong>though there existstechnologies that allow the development of cleanlow-emission industries, their costs are high andas a result have been unable to break into themainstream market. China and India have only inthe last 20 years seen rapid development, globalwarming was already high prior to that. However, the US continues to blame China and India fordeveloping too quickly, in other words the US isshifting the blame away from itself. The worlds developed nations are trying hard toavoid radical controls on growth, consumptionand profits. They have attempted to stave off alooming climate catastrophe by voluntary cuts, techno fixes and carbon trading; all these aredesperate efforts to prevent the inevitable. An Islamic Approach:The planetary system, the earth and itsecosystems, all work within their own limits andIslam sets limits to human behavior as a controlagainst excess. In essence, Islam describes anintegrated code of behavior which deals withpersonal hygiene, at one end of the spectrum, toour relationship with the natural order at theother. Regarding the environment Islam containsregulations concerning the conservation andallocation of scarce water resources; it has rulesfor the conservation of land with special zones ofgraded use; it has special rules for theestablishment of rangelands, wetlands, greenbelts and also wildlife protection andconservation. <strong>Al</strong>lah (S.W.T) exhorts mankind to bemoderate“ItisHewhoproducesgardens, bothofdiversekindsandlivesandpomegranates bothsimilaranddissimilar.Eatoftheirfruits cultivatedandwild, andpalmtreesandcropsthedaysoftheirharvest, anddonotbe profligate.Hedoesnotlovetheprofligate“ whentheybearfruitsandpaytheirduesonConclusion(TMQ6:142)makesGEO-2000it clear that if present trends inpopulation growth, economic growth andconsumption patterns continue, the naturalenvironment will be increasingly stressed. Distinctenvironmental gains and improvements willprobably be offset by the pace and scale of globaleconomic growth, increased global environmentalpollution and accelerated degradation of theEarth's renewable resource basePresent consumption patterns are leading to thedepletion of key minerals such as water wells, fossil fuels and agricultural land. At the same timethe consumption of such minerals is leading topollution to enter the atmosphere and the effectof this is now being felt across the world. <strong>Al</strong>thoughmost if not all of the models used to track thetemperature in the atmosphere or the coolingeffect is debatable and open to speculation, onething that is for certain is Capitalism has nointention of reducing its consumption of theworld’s limited minerals.

By: SM Waqas ImamIM-101 / T.EThe intellectual property rights give the individualthe right to guard his invention and grant him thepower to dispose of it and stop others from usingthis invention without his permission. The statestackle the protection of this right and punishanyone who may break it during the lifetime ofthe individual, and tens of years after his death. The protection laws also include the "inventor"companies. The problem arises with intellectual propertyrights is that in some realities it becomes amonopolistic property right. What is, 'intellectual monopoly?' When you buy apotato, you can eat it, throw it away, plant it ormake it into a sculpture you can use the 'idea' of apotato embodied in it to make better potatoes orto invent French fries. Current law of intellectualproperty allows producers of any product, technology or commodity to take this freedomaway from you, as in case of computer software ormedical drugs. The EU Property Rights Enforcement Directive is achilling example. It is giving powers to the musicand software industry to detect on people's homecomputers, prosecutes individuals found sharingfiles over the Internet, and empowers police toraid the homes of those. French MEP JanellyFourtou put the bill forward. Her husband is thehead of Vivendi Universal, which owns severalrecord labels. It was in June 2001 a U.S. company Myriaddemanded that all tests must be carried out onlyin its own lab at a cost of US$2500, almost 5 timeswhat was previously being charged in hospitals ofCanadian provinces, they were actually violatingits patents on a test for genetic weakness tobreast cancer. People are dying because ofignorance due to these patents and being forcedto pay inflated sums of money for treatment anddiagnosis! The slogan of “Warring freedoms guardingknowledge” would lead to a new kind of darkages. Newton said, "If I have seen further thanother men, it is because I have stood upon theshoulders of giants.” Question arises if thosegiants hurdle Newton by these so-calledintellectual property rights how would haveNewton stood?Human creativity will grow if set free from the ruleof starving dinosaurs that want to grow fattersitting alone on mountains of gold.GDP or Gross deception??By: Farooq IqbalIM-99 /T.EThe world is at exposure of millions of problemstoday. GDP, which is a measure of country’sdevelopment, is not really in public perspective adevelopment but projected as such. The word“GDP” means Gross Domestic Product. Most ofthe people today believe that the GDP is playingthe vital role in the progress and wellbeing ofpeople. Since we know that “every glitter is not agold “. The ground realities are not such. The GDP accounts every financial transaction aspositive, so the expenses of social decay andnatural disasters are marked as an economicprogress. For example, the dreadful effects ofcrime are verified positively as adding billions ofdollars to the GDP due to the need for locks andother security measures, increased policeprotection, property damage, and medical costs.Hurricane Andrew was a disaster for SouthernFlorida USA, but the GDP traced it as a gain to theeconomy of well over $15 billion.GDP ignores the disadvantage of living on foreignassets. Where governments have enlarged theirexpenditure by borrowing from foreign country, this raises the GDP temporarily, but the need torefund this debt becomes a rising trouble on thestate economy. This downside of borrowing fromabroad is not reflected in the GDP.Above all GDP overlooks the allocation of income. In effect the GDP conceals the information that arising wave does not lift all boats. From 1973 to1993 in the USA, while GDP rose by over 50percent, wages suffered a decline of almost 14percent. Meanwhile, during the 1980s alone, thetop 5 percent of families increased their realincome by almost 20 percent. It now explains whypeople feel increasingly gloomy despite officialclaims of economic of progress and growth.33

36Guidelines for Studentsabout Final Year ProjectBy: S. M. Sohaib TariqIM/<strong>Al</strong>umni.<strong>Al</strong>l the students who graduate from N.E.D have totake projects in final year. The main theme behindthis project is to enable students to applypractically the knowledge, which they havegrabbed during their 3 years of study and whatthey may be learning in their final years. Since Ihave already gone through this phase, here arefew suggestions for upcoming B.E students thatmay help them selecting the project for final year.1 Projects are given in-groups of 3,4,5,6students. Number of students variesdepartment to department. It depends on thenumber of students present in that final year.Departments like Mechanical, Civil etc allowsto make project group of even 6, 7 students.2 Every group will have to choose a groupleader.3 Try to make group with students of similarmentality and areas of interests.4 Project merit list will be formed according tothe S.E percentage. So students are advised towork hard in SE.5 Projects may be assigned after T.E exams or instarting months of B.E.6 Take project related to that field of yourdiscipline in which you have your interests andyou want to start your career in. Like if you arethe student of Mechanical Engineering andyou desire to have your career in SteamGeneration, Power Plants etc, and then try totake your project related to above mentionedareas. It is very important because studentsusually do this mistake i.e. they take projectsnon relevant to their cherish field and thenface problems in their future in interviews,field-work etc. Such as a student opting forpost related to Manufacturing but had his finalyear project related to InventoryManagement.7 Take project for which you are sure ofcompleting in given time. Project shouldneither be too easy that you may finish it in 3or 4 months nor it be too laborious or hardthat you may fail to tackle it within thespecified time (which is usually 8-10 months).8 Prefer to take projects of industries becausethen your projects will be useful. But makesure that industry is willing to help you, financially or technically, whenever yourequire them during your project. Abstainfrom taking projects of military relatedindustries. They are many big names in themilitary sector but they do not help students.9 We have numerous students who considerfinal year project futile and wastage of timeand money. So they take those projects whichhave already been done by the students ofprevious batches and are now available inproject library. Their aim is just to copy thework of past students and then submit thatcopy as their “Project”. Yes this “trick” maywork and cost you least and your time will be“saved” but you could not learn anything fromproject. I would suggest students to take newprojects. Avoid taking the trite.Living forever is not just adreamBy: Faiza RaeesIM-70/T.EHappiness on earth - it does not seem possible toenjoy even for a short time. Sickness, aginghunger often make life miserable. To talk aboutliving forever on earth is to close your eyes to thetruth. You may feel that it is a waste of time totalk about that living forever is just a dream, andmost people will agree with you, but the questionarises that why can we be so sure that you can liveforever on earth? Why should we believe thateverlasting life is not just a dream...?We can believe because supreme power ALLAHprepared earth with everlasting resources tosatisfy what we want. He almighty made earth justperfect for us. In addition, he created man andwomen in the best way for them to enjoy life tothe full in this earthly home.

Is it really GOD’S purpose to let people live happilyon earth forever? If it is then everlasting, life is notjust a wish or dream. He almighty is the one whofirmly established it, who did not create it simplyfor nothing, who formed it even to be established. We can truly be happy if it is God’s purpose to letus, live-forever. For things: if you had to decide onwhat date would you choose to die, you cannotpick. Nobody wants and neither does any othernormal person who has a measure of health. Godmade us with the desire to LIVE not the desire toDIE. God made humans because “He has puteternity into their minds,” means ordinarilypeople desire to live on and on without dying. However, the earth is not inhabited in the waythat God meant it to be because people living inpractically all parts of the earth, but they are notliving together happily in the united family in theway that their Creator meant them. Becausetoday the world is divided, there is crime, there iswar, millions of people hungry and sick, somehave daily worries about housing, work andexpenses, and none of these things bring honor toGod.Consider you had power, would you bring to endall the things that cause human sufferings. Inaddition, would you bring out the conditions forwhich human hearts long? Of course, you would. Our lovingly GOD will do just that. He will satisfyour needs and desires. God says, “You are openingyour hand and satisfying the desire of every livingthing”To make possible these fine blessing in earth, Godpromises to bring to their end both wickednessand those who cause it and at the same time Hewill protect those who serve Him. However, theend of the world not mean end of the earth. Itmean end only of bad people and their way ofliving, but those who are serving God will, survivethe end easily and the they will enjoy freedomfrom all who want to hurt and oppress them.Such things such as wars, food shortages, greatearthquakes and growing loss of love would markthe last days of the system. The very conditions inthe world today shows that we are now living atthe time when the destruction of this entiresystem of the thing is due to happen. Yes verysoon GOD will cleanse the earth of all who wouldruin it.If you love life and want to live forever on earthunder GOD’S rule than you must hurry to take inaccurate knowledge of God, His purposes and hisrequirements. This means everlasting life, theirtaking in knowledge of you, the only true GOD,and of the one whom you sent forth” what a joy itis to know that we can live forever, that it is notjust a dream!Discover Yourself by YourNameLet's see if it really works!Does your name begin with: A?Activist, practical, emotional, egoistic.Does your name begin with: B?Lazy, experimental, pampered.Does your name begin with: C?Social, emotional, control over desires.Does your name begin with: D?Caring, talented, good sense of humor, friendlyattitude, jealous, short tempered.Does your name begin with: E?Talkative, love to read books, balanced.Does your name begin with: F?Idealistic, romantic, publicly showy, extravagant.Does your name begin with: G?Fastidious, perfectionist, active, responsible.Does your name begin with: H?Affectionate, strong, perfectionist, dreamer with apassion for life.Does your life begin with: I?Experimental, adventurous37
