2<strong>National</strong> Institute of Technical Education of Sri Lanka (NITESL)The Institute was established <strong>in</strong> 1983 as the <strong>National</strong> Technical Teacher Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>gCollege (NTTTC) and it was renamed as the <strong>National</strong> Institute of Technical Education(NITE) <strong>in</strong> 1994. The Institute became a statutory body <strong>in</strong> the year 1999 as the <strong>National</strong>Institute of Technical Education of Sri Lanka (NITESL) under the Parliamentary Act No.59 of 1998. In the near future, the University of Vocational Technology (UNIVOTEC) willbe established <strong>in</strong> the premises of NITESL. The university comprises of three faculties;namely Faculty of Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Technology, Faculty of Industrial Technology and Faculty ofVocational technology. Thedevelopment of new technology and new <strong>in</strong>dustrial knowledge and the <strong>in</strong>creased emphasis on<strong>in</strong>frastructure development gave rise to the present status of the construction <strong>in</strong>dustry.Today, construction offers a wide range of job opportunities for those who seek high profile,lucrative and satisfy<strong>in</strong>g career.The <strong>Quantity</strong> Surveyor is a highly acclaimed profession with<strong>in</strong> the construction Industry and awell-qualified and well-experienced <strong>Quantity</strong> Surveyor plays an <strong>in</strong>dispensable role <strong>in</strong> the Industryand is highly demanded both locally and <strong>in</strong>ternationally. <strong>Quantity</strong> surveyors provide a range ofservices, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g cost advice and forecast<strong>in</strong>g, contractual advice, cost control and f<strong>in</strong>ancialmanagement of construction projects from the <strong>in</strong>ception to completion. This type of workprovides an excellent basis for progression to management positions throughout the <strong>in</strong>dustry.Accord<strong>in</strong>g to the Labour Market Information Bullet<strong>in</strong> (2006) published by the Tertiary andVocational Education Commission <strong>Quantity</strong> Surveyor is ranked as the forth most demandedoverseas profession. Especially they have excellent career opportunities <strong>in</strong> the Middle Easternregion <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the United Arab Emirates (UAE).The proposed course is designed for the practic<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Quantity</strong> Surveyors employed <strong>in</strong> the MiddleEastern countries who are fac<strong>in</strong>g difficulties <strong>in</strong> obta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g further professional advancementthrough higher qualifications due to the non-availability of a <strong>Diploma</strong> level course <strong>in</strong> <strong>Quantity</strong>Survey<strong>in</strong>g.The course was <strong>in</strong>itiated by a request from the Association of Practic<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Quantity</strong> Surveyors andEstimators - Sri Lanka on behalf of the practic<strong>in</strong>g Sri Lankan <strong>Quantity</strong> Surveyors <strong>in</strong> Dubai.This course is an extension of the <strong>National</strong> <strong>Diploma</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Quantity</strong> Survey<strong>in</strong>g (<strong>NDQS</strong>) two year parttime(weekend) course which is conducted at the <strong>National</strong> Institute of Technical Education of SriLanka (NITESL) target<strong>in</strong>g the practic<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Quantity</strong> Surveyors <strong>in</strong> Sri Lanka.The Parliament Act No. 59 of 1998 of the <strong>National</strong> Institute of Technical Education of Sri Lanka,which came <strong>in</strong>to operation with effect from 08th January 1999, has vested the powers on theInstitution under Section 4 of PART -II, to award certificates, diplomas, associate degrees, andother academic dist<strong>in</strong>ctions by conduct<strong>in</strong>g education and tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g programmes through differentmodes of <strong>in</strong>struction for persons who wish to qualify <strong>in</strong> the field of technical and vocationaleducation and tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g.<strong>NDQS</strong> Distance Learn<strong>in</strong>g - NITESL
