ACTUALE D I T O R I A LDear customers andbusiness partners ofSchrack Seconet AG,Fortunately there are hardly any borders forgood ideas in the globalised world of today. A goodand fair offer will always be successful. Also wefrom Schrack Seconet have been able to make thispositive experience in the past years. Our exports arethriving! While during the first decade after thefoundation of the company we focused on buildingup the markets in Central Europe, today we areglad that we have also successfully expanded ourbusiness activities to further markets. In Russia, the Ukraine, China and the Arab area we havebeen able to convince national authorities of thequality of our systems. Just how active we are inthe field of exports can be seen very well from ourcalendar of fairs. We are very proud that we havegrown into an internationally leading player in ourbranch of business. That our product development is always one stepahead can be seen from our new MTD 533 firedetector which will revolutionise preventive fireprotection. You will find more details about thenew product in the present issue of Fire & Care, but let me give you an idea up front: Thetechnologies that we have used in this product area major leap in security engineering. It is a totallynew kind of detector, which can be programmed forvarious detection functions and thus is the first firedetector on the market that permits differentapplication functions in one single device. Thisincreases security and flexibility for the user in theassembly, operation and potential change in the useof buildings. Years of experience and new researchfindings have been blended into the MTD 533.And with its capacities it puts the high demandswhich Schrack Seconet places on security systemssolutions on a solid basis. The visionary American entrepreneur HenryFord put it like this: “Coming together is abeginning; keeping together is progress; workingtogether is success.” Let this be the guideline for ourcommon work for success.Yours,Construction work at Schrack Seconetheadquarters almost finishedIn the past years largescalemodification andexpansion work has beencarried out at SchrackSeconet. In addition to workat the branch offices in Linzand Klagenfurt a lot of workhas been done also at theAustrian headquarters of thecompany in Wien Meidling.Construction activities are infull swing – their completionis planned for this year’ssummer. The major part of the work, related to theexpansion of the company headquarters inVienna, was focused on the storage buildingof Schrack Seconet. In order to complete allwork in time, the constructionwork started in November 2006.Some employees have alreadymoved into the new premises. The expansion plans also theadding of another floor to thestorage building. NEWS© Schrack Seconet AGNew detector generation withSchrack Seconet is not only aguarantor of the highest security, qualityand trust, but also of innovation andingenuity. For years now the trailblazinginnovations of fire-alarm systems andperipheral devices have been comingfrom the high-tech hotbed of theEuropean showcase company. The firealarm system MTD 533 once again is aproof of the power of innovation ofSchrack Seconet and opens up new pathsin safety and security technology. There is no other area where thedevelopment of new products is faster than inthe field of technology. For Schrack Seconetthe permanent development of its products isof major importance so that itscustomers can always be offered thelatest and most secure solutions. Themultiple sensor detector SchrackMTD 533 is the latest innovationcoming from the lab of the safetyand security specialist and with itsnew technology is ringing in a new era ofpreventive fire protection. Equipped with asmoke and heat sensor, the MTD 533 can verywell be termed an all-rounder. HaraldKobermann, Product Manager of safety andsecurity systems at Schrack Seconet: “Theexcellent scattered light coefficient and a precisesensor system make sure that any potentialsmoke development is detected by the detectorvery fast. However, as not every fire can bedetected only due to smoke, the device measuresa rise in temperature, thus providing doublesecurity – a property that is an integralcomponent of the fire-alarm technology ofSchrack Seconet.”Intelligent adjustment to theenvironment – a fire detectorfor all applicationsWhat makes the MTD 533 so different fromother fire detectors is the capacity to adjust itselfto its environment automatically. “In the© Schrack Seconet AG‘training phase’the new detectormeasures differentparameters in its environment, such as theprecise temperature curve and the opaqueness ofthe air. On the basis of these data the MTD 533calculates the respective smoke and heatsensitivity required, which guarantees theoptimum use of the fire detector”, saysKobermann. “Thus it is possible for the producteven under extreme conditions to guarantee fastand secure detection.” Moreover, the capacity foradjustment to the environment reduces themonitoring effort and potential triggering of thefire detector by mistake is efficiently prevented. Not only is the MTD 533 in a position to adjustitself to the environment in the best possibleway but it also excels by itsresilience to environmental impact. Thus the device registers criticalcontamination, for example bydust, and immediately signalsthat maintenance work is requiredon this account. The decision of whether smoke detectors orheat detectors should be used in the fire alarmsystem is no longer important when using theMTD 533. For it can be used either as a smoke4March 2007

intelligent technologydetector, heat detector or multiple sensordetector. In this way it creates an increasedmeasure of flexibility and reduces installationeffort both during first installation and duringongoing operation, such as rededication andchanged use ofResponse characteristics rooms.270°0°In its corethe MTD 533combines the90°know-how ofyears of researchand numeroustests. The smoke180°sensor workswith a scatteringangle of 90°, which, in practice, achieves thebest measuring values and detection properties. This accurate measurement optics not onlyguarantees high security but is also the basis forintelligent decision logic of the fire detector. Analgorithm that has been developed only for thisproduct safeguards the connection of sensors, the dynamic analysis of signals, interactivecommunication and automatic adaptation toenvironment conditions. Thus MTD 533decides whether the situation requires thenecessity to act and forwards data andinformation to the fire alarm system reliably andfast.Made in EuropeThe MTD 533 can be termed agenuine European. All steps of productintroduction – from first brainstorming sessionsin the development department to productionand packaging – are carried out in Europeancountries. In addition, the MTD 533 complieswith all EU standards and exceeds currentsafety and security standards. The technicalspecifications have been observed as well as thoseof environmental protection. “In our productswe always use materials that are free of harmfulsubstances and during production we only uselead-free connections”, Kobermann says.Full compatibilityFor optimum integration into existingsystems, MTD 533 has full backward andforward compatibility. Therefore the technologyof the fire detector always makes possible anupgrade of existing systems. At the same timeMTD 533 can also be easily combined withfuture generations of the Integral fire alarmpanel. Thus it is not necessary to replace the© Schrack Seconet AGdetectors when new systems are installed.Another novelty in the fire alarm technologyis the plug-and-play design, which wasdeveloped by Schrack Seconet AG. Thanks tothe “High Speed” start procedure of MTD 533start-up is three times as fast as in traditionaldetectors. This functionality is of enormousimportance, in particular if an existing system isexchanged or renewed.Documented securityBy means of a 2-D matrix barcodeMTD 533 receives an individual detectoraddress and enables other system components toimmediately identifythe fire detector. “Theassignment of a uniqueaddress also simplifiesthe exchange of thedevices” , ProductManager Kobermannexplains. “If an existingfire detector is replacedby another, the newproduct simply isassigned the address ofits predecessor.” This feature makes it possiblefor users to start-up and maintain the MTD 533quickly and easily. If detectors of different loops areprogrammed for one common protection target,we speak of a virtual loop. The MTD 533 isequipped with this cross-loop programming. Thanks to this feature, the flexibility of the firedetector is considerably increased and, what ismore, the costs can be optimised as well.A fire detector is designed to act rapidly andreliably in cases of emergency. But also at timeswhen it is not necessary to alert the fire alarmpanel, the MTD 533 is highly active. By meansof permanent self-testing of all operatingparameters the detector makes sure to be fullyfunctional when an emergency occurs. Alreadyat the slightest deviation from the specifiedstandard operation a signal is sent to therespective panel. This guarantees not onlypermanent operational reliability but alsocreates full transparency of the functionality ofall detectors. The technology is checked everysecond. And, in addition, the MTD 533 is alsoin a position to remain ready for operation andalarm also in the deactivated status. If an alarmsignal is sent in this state, the detector can beused to trigger measures establishing firecompartments, such as the closing of fire doors. In this way undesired alerting of the fire brigadeis prevented.Functionality and designThe technical superiority of theMTD 533 is not the only difference to firedetectors of earlier generations. Apart from theoptimised functionality it excels by its modern, inconspicuous and compact design and smallsize. In order to blend in the detector with therespective environment and premises in anoptimum way, it is offered in all RAL colours. This makes it possible for the user to have atotally inconspicuous detector, thanks to its capacity of blending inwith its environment.A detector for all casesWith its intelligenttechnology, the flexible usability inevery conceivable area and thedouble protection by smoke andtemperature monitoring, theMTD 533 is an indispensablepartner in the area of fire protection. With its supreme technical features the firedetector offers optimum protection of people, assets and property.© Schrack Seconet AGThe multiple sensor detectorMTD 533 – all benefits at a glance• By the application of both a smoke and aheat sensor the Schrack MTD 533 offersdouble security.• Intelligent technology makes it possible forthe MTD 533 to automatically adjust to itsenvironment in a “training phase”.• With its forward and backwardcompatibility the MTD 533 can be easilyintegrated into existing or new systems.• A 2-D matrix barcode assigns the MTD 533a unique address, thus making it possiblefor the system to easily identify the detector.• As a product that has been designed andcreated in Europe, the MTD 533 complieswith all the applicable standards andregulations.• By its modern design and the possibility toorder the MTD 533 in any colour, it can beinconspicuously installed everywhereMarch 20075

PROJECTSRussian State Archive in St. PetersburgIt is not only buildings and human beingsthat need highly-sensitive fire protection, butalso important historical documents. In this areaSchrack Seconet has been entrusted with a specialtask, i.e. to equip the newly established RussianState Archive in St. Petersburg with a fire alarmsystem. The sheer size of the entire complex isa specific logistic challenge: On an area of 68,000m 2 an administrative building, a reading room,a museum as well as a building with 73 roomsand space for 6.5 millions storage units is situated.Russian national treasuresprotected ted from firesHighly advancedprotection forhistorical documentsIt is common knowledgethat paper catches fire easily. It is extremely demandingto protect sensitive objects, such as documents. But it iseven more exciting, if thesedocuments are hundreds ofyears old and are objects ofpride for the Russian nation. The respective protective© Schrack Seconet AG measures therefore need tocomply with the higheststandards and fulfil themost important tasks. Fast detection of thesources of a fire, clear control commands to fireextinguishing, smoke suction and warningsystems, as well as effective extinguishing in caseof a fire – everything has to function accuratelyand free of errors. The Russian company “Ochranaservice” cooperated with us as a partner companyfor the installation of the system components. The colleagues from Ochrana have demonstratedtheir competence in the fire alarm sector alreadyat other large objects, such as the Russian centralbank in St. Petersburg or at the Congress Palacein Strelnja. When they established the fire alarm planfor the Russian State Archive, the specialists fromSchrack Seconet decided to divide the object intofunctionally autonomous blocks. The specific requirements of the various roomscalled for a differentiation of the systems to beinstalled. Thus the solution was adjusted preciselyto the respective rooms and both special firedetectors and gas and powder extinguishingsystems were used in some rooms. In this waythe accurate localisation of alarms andinterferences but also the targeted extinguishingof the respectively required extinguishing agentsis made certain. An automatic water extinguishing systemthat covers an area of about 10,000 square meters, makes optimum all-over protection complete.“A piece of Russian history is safely preserved inthe million people metropolis St. Petersburg, thanks to the high quality of Schrack Seconetproduct solutions”, Area Manager Larissa Kirschis certain.© Schrack Seconet AGState-of-the-art nurse call system in high demand in KievCardio Center Kiew© Schrack Seconet AGThe Kiev Cardio Center is the firstmedical facility in the Ukraine that hasbeen equipped with a highly advancedcommunication system from Schrack Seconet. The recently completed nine-storied hospital, which offers a capacity of 150 beds, is designedto become a top address for cardiologic surgery. To guarantee this, great attention was paid tothe compliance with international standardsand requirements during its establishment. The equipment of five operating theatres, onesurgery ward for adults and children, therapyand reanimation room as well as laboratories isstate-of-the art. Major projects inthe Land of SmilesQuality from Europe isincreasingly appreciated in Asia. The Chinese markets open up forproducts from the West andgrowth is dramatically increasing. Also the high-tech companySchrack Seconet, which has beencommissioned with three majorprojects in Shanghai, profits fromthis fact. A plant of the Austrianmanufacturer of printed circuitboards, AT&S has been equippedwith the latest technologies interms of fire protection, i.e.modular fire alarm panels of thetype Integral and the respectivesmoke detectors. The printedcircuit boards manufactured at theChinese AT&S site are used primarily in thefield of telecommunications. “In Austria wehave been successfully cooperating with AT&Sfor many years. Therefore it was only logicalthat the company has chosen us also for acommission abroad,” says Jürgen Tichy, ExportManager in charge of Asia at Schrack Seconet.Success in Shanghai, the secret capital of ChinaAnother prestigious object was carried out atthe port of Shanghai. When it comes to theturnover capacity, Shanghai is the world’sthird-largest container port and situated some20 km from the city centre. Also here someIntegral fire alarm panels are used whichinterconnect the individual port buildings. The“BMZ Integral” is frequently chosen bycustomers, as it has a major benefit over othersafety and security systems – its redundantstructure. As all system components areduplicated, a failure of individual componentswill never put the reliability of the system atrisk. In the management of these two orders theShanghai-based Shenze company acted as apartner company. The most recent businesswas conducted with the Austrian plasticsmanufacturer Semperit, which has a subsidiaryin Shanghai, where they manufacture vinylprotective gloves. To bring its fire-alarm systemto a state-of-the-art level, the industrial groupSemperit AG Holding as well opted for theshowcase product “BMZ Integral”.“Made in Austria” –a quality mark in China! While Central Europe remains the core marketfor Schrack Seconet, business relations with Asiaare gaining importance. That it is particularlyAT&S and Semperit in ShanghaiChina thatcurrently isshowing suchgreat interest© Schrack Seconet AG in the highqualityproducts of Schrack Seconet is noaccident, however. Shanghai with its port, which is also called the “door to China”, is themost important industrial city in the MiddleKingdom. After all, there is a reason why theworld exposition “Expo 2010” is held inShanghai. Western influence cannot be deniedat the 16 millions inhabitants’ businessmetropolis in Eastern China, which simplifiesbusiness relations a lot. Still, cultural differenceshave to be taken into account and adjustmentshave to be made. Thus the fire alarm panel forSemperit was equipped with a Chinese display.Customer service like this gives Schrack SeconetTIPThe Schrack SeconetBook Recommendation!Henry PortzOn 369 pages authorHenry Portz describes allimportant terms of the structuralengineering part of fire protection.Portz himself is an officiallyappointed and sworn expert forpreventive fire protection, firefighting, explosion protection,as well as causes of fire andexplosion – and therefore offersprofound know-how.
